We use a standard brick lengthwise to do basics on. To make it harder we 1/4 turn them so that you have less of your foot making contact. Good exercise especially for kicks and balance.

Ask for a new partner. I would politely talk to your instructor about your seriousness in your training and ask to be put with people who are there to train and not just take up space. Can you tell that this is a pet peeve of mine?

Here's the thread that is labeled "gatorade vs. water". http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=13590&highlight=gatorade Use the search function and plug in gatorade and you will get a multitude of threads just the topic of energy drinks.

Stay on this forum and go to page two. You should see a few threads about this with quite a few comments. BTW, never heard of it (except on Happy Days!) -
5 point palm exploding heart technique
Red J replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This thread is getting quite old now, its like exploding a dead heart. I mean beating a dead horse. (I can't believe that I just revealed a secret monk pun in public. There goes the newsletter for another year. Geesh.) -
You get a new belt every time. Many just elect to wear the old faithful and just add the appropriate stripe. At 5th the stripes turn to red so I guess most go with a new belt (by the time you get here your belt needs to be replaced I'm sure).

Ok, now, this is just ridiculous... How can a defibulator revive an exploded heart? Everyone knows you need a torque wrench, WD40, and a set of 30 weight ball bearings to do that. Sheesh. "Hey! It's all ball bearings nowadays. Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads, and I'm gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State. " Nice try Fletch! -
I agree with your opinion. I wouldn't want to have to defend myself against anyone with a knife, but against a well trained person it would get ugly. Its the same with a stick or a bat. Sure we practice against these attacks, but how effective are you going to be against someone who knows what they are doing. Making up 30" inches on a stick fighter is a tall task. Luckily not too many people carry swords!

It gets woven in with the advanced material. Your mind gets "blown away" as you re-learn new applications to your existing material. You have the right idea.

5 point palm exploding heart technique
Red J replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, if you look for a guy with a tiger burnt into his left forearm and a dragon on his right forearm he has the knowledge to show you. Of course the last person that I heard of who was taught this method accidentally performed it on themselves while sleeping. It was a very sad story. -
OK, the example at the top of page three is the intercepting and redirecting to affect balance while the technique on page four is a hard block designed to stop or uproot at the point of contact (bicep or shoulder). Either way you are affecting balance and ultimately taking away any ability for your opponent to move their center as you are controlling it. The first example you are moving it down, past their feet and across while in the second you are uprooting moving it backward, left and up. I hope this helps.

Primer grey with the rust coming through. I can't believe you remembered. It's been so long. -
Me too. Yeah, they make me cry. I did get to see them beat the Pats though. That was exciting.

He'll be the guy in the 1978 Monte Carlo with no wheels on blocks. Tell him Clark Griswold sent you. -
To further illustrate this concept, I was teaching a technique to two fairly new students which involved blocking a front punch. The technique involved using an "L" step. (From a horse your left foot moves to your right and your right moves forward so that you are now facing 9:00 and you are right of center). As you turn and plant your right foot you execute a right forearm block to your opponent's arm. You can block towards the wrist, below the bicep, on the bicep, or in the shoulder socket. As you move up the arm you start to jam the punch more and can really affect balance. The bicep and shoulder variation are my favorites as it stops the attack in its tracks and moves the person back. From here you can do a variety of moves. I believe we were blocking, hitting with a left willow palm to the chest and a right back punch. The point being that the preferred block takes away the person's balance and makes the rest of your job a lot easier.

Ok, enough already. Being a public forum I am ashamed that we are discussing one of KFs most deadly and secret moves. Where is a moderator when you need one? Oh, I taught this move to a three year old last week who did it to his cat. Its a good thing we had a defibilator on scene so we could instantly revive the cat. I don't know how, but I received a letter from the Shaolin Temple stating that they were suspending my monthly newsletter for a one year period. Geesh, am I bummed. -
41 Yeah, still training daily. I love it. Welcome back.

Red J replied to n3wt's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Well put. The first choice does not sound like what I would be looking for unless I could learn how to joust. J/K I would probably take a look at the last three. You can always visit and check it out and report your findings if you need any help. You may also want to see if your college offers something as many do at a substantial savings. -

DO ALL INSTRUCTORS KNOW ALOT ABOUT WEAPONS?
Red J replied to 15-lisa-newbie's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
No, it is not a requirement in some systems. BTW, if he is a second degree he isn't a master. At least not yet. Most systems say 5th degree, some 4th. The best thing to do is ask. The bo is a pretty common weapon across most systems. If he has any knowledge, it would probably be with the bo or with sticks.
