  1. I think you mean "kendo". Kempo/kenpo are more of a translation issue when it comes to the Hawaiin based arts.
  2. Congrats Patrick. You da Man. (Meanwhile, I get one more post closer....Bwahahaha!)
  3. The whole sauna suit thing is for making weight for a fight/match. It is a temp deal and if done incorrectly or on a regular basis can be bad for you. Sweating more than you need to can dehydrate you and you can lose electrolytes and other important nutrients. If you don't know what you are doing you also risk heat stroke. For regular cardio you want to be as cool as you can be and well hydrated. You can run on an empty stomach, but I usually have a little something before I go. If you want to burn more fat then go long and slow. Go to http://www.runnersworld.com/newindex/0,,s6-0-0-0-0,00.html for more tips on running.
  4. Yes, listen to your friend.
  5. I with you on that. Well, I was responding to the original poster's question of: The facts are that Chuck's base is Hawaiin Kempo and he fights MMA.
  6. How about the "Iceman" Chuck Liddell. His foundation is Hawaiin Kempo. Check it out: http://thepit.cmasdirect.com/
  7. Welcome, where do you study? You may also want to look at the thread called Kempo Principle: Breaking Balance. It's in the Karate forum. You will see some SKK in that one.
  8. Welcome. Sign in at the Kempo Roll Call thread under the Karate forum and introduce yourself. There are a few people here that study SKK or one of it variants.
  9. Nice one. So how about a review on the shoe from someone in the know? C'mon P.
  10. I don't know if you remember the old converse version. They were white or black with the star. The bottoms on the heal have tread while the rest of the shoe is treadless and flat. They seem to hold up. I have been thinking of switching and tried on a pair the other night. If they were the right size I would have bought them.
  11. You said it much better than I did! I personally think that with your previous experience and your current knowledge that you are at the level of black. You have been invited to test. I think you are ready or could be ready in a short period of time. So here's an idea..... Option 1. Find a TKD instructor that would test you based on your skill and technique and not on politics or organizational mumbo jumbo. (If anyone knows an independent in her area, pass the name to her. Better yet, if you are someone who could do it get in touch with her. We know she's been training for a while and had switched systems.) Option 2. Talk to your last instructor and be honest. Tell him your goals and go from there. After thinking about your situation, I would like to see you explore #1 and at least get that on your resume. Maybe knowing that it's for real would give you the spark to bust your behind and start training. After that you could lay low and do your JJ/snowboarding thing. Just my thoughts. What do you think?
  12. Wow Red, its a small world! Valley MA is a 20 minute drive from my house. The karate instructor I teach with swears by the 5 star shoes! I've yet to get a pair, but I'm sure I will. And NO, I don't work for them. Too funny. A lot of people like these shoes. That's for sure.
  13. I'm still wearing Asics "medalist" wrestling shoes. Many people I know are wearing this one from Five Elements. It is the old Converse patent remanufactured under a new label. http://www.valleymartialarts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=180 Here is my first topic I ever posted. It's on the same topic. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=4113&highlight=
  14. Yes, snowboard for now. You will know when the time is right to return to MA (I was out for 15 years). Or the Yoda version: Snowboard now you must, for return to MA you will. Melt, the snow will. Oh, on the dojang deal. If you do go back, explain to the instructor that you are an adult with a life and not someone who is going to play games to clean the dojang.
  15. Maybe you should be struck down from your lofty status for questioning the almighty founder. Congratulations to Patrick!
  16. In your original post your question asked if you were instructing without compensation could you be sued if you dumped a student. Well it is unlikely that you would be sued and almost guaranteed that it would be dismissed quickly if even entertained. The suit would have no merit as there is no consideration on the part of the person bringing the suit as your are essentially volunteering your time. People talk about lawsuits all the time. I am in a profession where I hear it all the time. I have yet to see someone "pony up the dough" to hire an attorney over something really stupid. You see the ambulance chasers are not going to take a case against someone without big pockets, so the plaintiff would have to put out a sizeable retainer to have someone even listen to them. In most cases the attorney would tell them that it is a waste of time. That's not to say that it couldn't happen, some psycho might mortgage his house to give you a hard time, but that is rare.
  17. I have been known to make people climb the walls, but that's a different story. Try this sight. http://www.screwgravity.com/tutorials/wall_flip/tutorial_wall_flip.htm I got an "A" in googling. Don't hurt yourself.
  18. Exactly.....
  19. You should consider taking a trip once a month to see a live instructor. That way you would a least get some feedback on a regular basis.
  20. How about a little bump on this thread. I have been thinking about this concept a lot. The other day I taught a lesson on this. The concepts were all about balance. The angle was you can take it (Tiger) or you can let your opponent give it to you (Crane). Just a different spin as I find many students want to knock someone around. Well sometimes it is easier to let the attacker commit and leave himself vulnerable and then you can just expose it by going with it letting his momentum get the best of him. Hmmm.
  21. That balloon dude was freaking me out when he started talking about traps. Jack and Locke should have been a little more concerned IMO. I was telling them, "Come one guys, he's an Other". Ana Lucia hit it on the head. Jack and Locke are too busy being concerned with Locke and Jack. Next week looks good. It is next week isn't it? Can we get a confirmation on that? Yowza!
  22. Parkerlineage: Here is an oldie but a goodie. We can talk stylistic differences and simularities here. Read the posts and start making some comments. I'll join in. Maybe we can get our own forum category!
  23. Well, its very possible that the "Chinese Kenpo" is someone's version of Parker's Kenpo as different instructors have organized the principle's under different organizations. Who's the instructor?
  24. Sounds good. I know there is a thread already started. I will revive it tomorrow. You may want to take a look for it as well.
