Accepting back past students to the dojo?

Which part Alsey? If you mean his dad not taking him then yes it is..he is! I guess i could find somewhere for him just that it would be nice for him to stay with the same sensei, also i like that fact that we train under the same sensei and in the same style. -

an interesting perspective on the kyu and dan system
Shotokan-kez replied to alsey's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It was a very inbteresting article, the thing that stuck out for me was about the kids and their ranks. I like the belt system and i think it should stay in place but i dont think some of the people deserve their ranks, so yes the tape on belts sounds like a good idea. Also the older guy thing, there was a big older guy grading for blck belt at our dojo recently and he failed. But should old people be judged, surely their fitness levels cant be as good as the younger one's -

Yeah i thought it was just me so i'm glad you agree with me. I thought he may have been better in the saturday classes which is specially for kids but he see's his dad on a saturday and his dad won't take him. hehe new beginner. I will get used to being 1st kyu, i aint even got my new belt yet, hopefully sensei will have them at training on monday. -
Ha snap yeah, Ryan always wants to play that with me and he always wins cos he cheats! And then when you play with your adult friends you get very sore hands

I will try and cut this story as short as possible . I have always trained in shotokan. A year ago i decided to go back to karate and bring my son along, the nearest club was shukokai. We trained there for a short while but i wasnt doing so well as i had a high rank in shotokan and in shukokai i had to start from scratch and wasn't reaching my full potential. I decided that i would get in touch with my previous sensei and he allowed me back on the grade i left on a few years previous, and also accepted my son on his yellow belt he earned in shukokai on the condition he didnt grade for a while until he got up to shotokan standards. The thing is i have settled very well in my old shotokan club and im now 1st kyu, but Ryan has been having difficulties adapting. He had made loads of friends in the shukokai club and seemed to be much happier. Unfortunatly the shotokan club is small and there is no-one there he can talk to. I know training isnt a social thing but he is only 9 and he was having real difficulties going from shukokai to shotokan. So i called the sensei and asked if Ryan could go back training at his club, and he point blankly refused! Personaly i think this is wrong. He is just a child and judging him for leaving in the first place is wrong (as it was me who changed it..not him!). The sensei said that because he had left before there is a chance he will again. But surely kids do this? If you teach kids on a daily basis like this then you should understand a little that kids don't always put 100% into it. I dunno and i'm not even sure im wording it right. I'm just annoyed at this sensei for refusing him, simply because he had been at the club before. What does everyone else think, particulary it would be interesting to hear what other sensei's feel about this. Cheers

I'm not exactly sure what your looking for either. I do agree with alsey, no karate uses brute force alone. -

Typical British weather is often rain, wind and cold. Where i train is awkward to get to on the bus and i dont drive so i have to cycle. Trouble is with our weather, when it's raining it can be hot and stuffy. Just lately it has been raining when i need to cycle to karate, i don't want to put my winter coat on because i sweat to much and get to hot, so i often cycle there in just a t-shirt. The public look at me and think im mad because it's pouring with rain So all i want to know it, i'm hot and sweaty but can cycling in the rain and getting wet make me ill? May sound like a dumb question, just curious. Cheers

Fab choices i must admit.....i got the rocky soundtrack, great to train to

Hmmm well i train three times a week in the dojo, thats an hour each time. I cant train as much as i'd like to at home cos of the kids and lack of room. If i do then i tend to practice kata, i also like to stand in kiba dachi and practice striking.
-
I agree with this completely. Oh the hand i can't really see this in a real life situation. We don't do this very often in our dojo but when i we i often think "would this really happen?". Then wonder weather they are a waste of time.

The highest rank at our club would say sensei ni rei and the rest will bow and say oss!

Hi. I do karate and i train at least twice a week, sometimes three times if i can afford it. To be honest i think for any martial arts system once a week isn't really enough to give the required commitment.
