One of my instructors is going to be teaching TKD at a local community center in about 6 months. He has BB's in (I think) two styles of TKD. The one that he is teaching is the very popular -you can get your BB in two years- kind. It's what has been taught there up until this point, and the center wants to keep its current students on track, and that is what the center wants taught, so that's what he'll teach. Anyway, he'd like some TKD BBs to help out around the class (he has 6-12 year olds). He offered to, in the next six months, catch me up and promote to BB. I did TKD for one semester in school before, and I have 4 years of karate, 2.5 of Kajukenbo, 2 of BJJ, and 3 of Judo, as well as one Study Abroad worth of Kung Fu. Because of all of this I pick up techniques and forms pretty quickly, and with my karate background all I'm lacking is the set of forms and kicks. I have no doubt that I will have all the material down by the time that he wants to promote me, and I will have a total of 10 months in, where its usually a min of 2 years to BB. I don't think that this is a huge deal, since I'll know and be able to execute everything, and he will need help teaching, but I was just curious as to some other opinions on the situation. Thanks!

Hello and welcome back!

When I started (at 11, quite a bit older) my mom and I had a deal, that she would allow me to (pay for) an activity that I was in as long as I would commit to 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, if I really didn't like it I could quit, but kids have short attention spans, so it's not always the best thing for them to get to start and stop activities based on what they think about it "today". Just MHO.

Training with girls, breasts in the way.

It has come up before- there have been at least two similar threads that I've posted in. Yeh, if she gets hit hard enough, she will get herself some lady-part protection. -
I found some MA treasures (well, to me...)

Yeh, I once fought a laday who's upper bod was mostly breasts, and I even had trouble. You've just got to do what you can in those situations. Keep in mind though, that if you do hit here there, she knew that was a risk going into the MA's and a real attacker would anyway. -
The one that is my go-to is to pull my arm toward me, through his thumb (much weaker than his fingers).

Jr. BB's are very different from style to style. I've seen some that are equals to Black belts, but most (and the reason in most systems for the Jr. Black Belt rank) have had BB level skill in as much as his kicks are great or her speed is impressive, but the maturity that goes along with a true BB is lacking- not at the fault of the practitioner, but just as a function of his/her age.

Philosophy in the dojo
marie curie replied to greenbelt_girl15's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Nope- I'm not interested in it, so I shy away from arts that include philosophy stuff. -
Keeping my son interested

Taking some time off and returning under my own terms was good for my training as a kid- but I took years off. I had to find MA again for myself. Not everyone's path- but it's just what worked for me. -
advice on waht to do.
marie curie replied to Maddwraph's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Judo helped my BJJ- I think as long as you are learning something related to the art, you should be able to find things that you can use to contribute to your BJJ skills. -
I find that looking at myself in the mirror when practicing balance stuff helps me get it under control.
-
Yeh, I def. think that the most important thing is what you get out of the class. some of the this style/that style of MA is silly and we forget that the most important thing is what we walk away with at the end of the day.

How do you know when you got a good instructor
marie curie replied to xena's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I think that a good instructor is someone who teaches in a way that you can understand, practices in a way that you can want to emulate, and runs his buisness in a way that you can respect and support. -
Hmmm- broken ribs really restrict safe movement- how far from healing are you?

Taekkyon help

You may be able to find some training videos online that you could study before traveling somewhere so you get the most out of a short training period. -
I think there was another that I saw missing, but still, not bad for an attempted comprehensive list.
