Judo v. BJJ
marie curie replied to mmalover's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Yeh, thats where BJJ breaks down- when the attacker has friends. The thing with Judo is that you aren't going to finish someone unless you are able to throw just that hard or into something like a fire hydrant. Also, and I'm quite not the fan of TKD-but try to get close enough to throw against someone who's trained in kicks nonstop and nothing else- you will have a broken arm or rib by the time you get close enough, then can you effectively throw? Nothing against- I heart Judo. It's just a sport- less a martial art- and as much as it is a MA, it's more an art and less martial, I think. -
Also, I know that in one of my systems there is a very little bit that you have to learn for those upper belts in comparison to the time that you are in grade- I think that the reasons are many: -to observe you as a higher rank for a while -to see how you teach and let you develop those skills -to let you hone the abilities that you will be tested on (history, terminology, sparring) -to make sure that you are in it for good... it seems to be that the biggest two times for people to quit is white/yellow, and brown belt. I always thought that it was really odd until I was a brown belt and quit

How to put grips on a bokken out of hockey tape.
marie curie replied to future_black_belt's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Start out with the tape at a slight angle, \ wrap to one tape-width before you want it to end, and then start pulling the tape closer to strait across, - but the time you are finished with the next wrap around it, it should be pretty much strait across. -

http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=89077&langId=-1&product_parentId=13628&crumb=13501&categoryId=13628&parent_category_rn=13519 here they are- look good... as long as you are male there are also some similar less bulky foot pads I saw too. OH, and I totally agree- I'd maybe rather not wear one, myself, but when the boys don't (the college students that we teach) I kinda slip into baby-sitter mode, so I do to set a good example -
Very important! Thanks for pointing this out!

Have you read? Fighter Fact book 2?
marie curie replied to learning kempo-karate's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
agreed- I doubt that a book will be the deciding factor in weather or not I can effectively use my arts to my advantage, but it does sound interesting -

marie curie replied to DisgruntledGirl's topic in Karate
Hahahahahahahahahahaha Yes! I am totally that student. I've done judo for a couple of years and karate, and - mostly in BJJ- I'm like- no no no, that doesn't work- see, because- oh. wait. nevermind Granted its a little different because my teachers are my fiance and one of my best guy friends who I used to live with, so theyjust think it's funny- no big -
If you are looking for something similar like TKD, I wouldn't commit myself to any contracts... It's just a thought, but I had a hard time with TKD because I'd done karate for 4 years, and some of the nuances of what they taught were different, and in my eyes wrong. I ended up just attending/doing enough to pass the class ( I took it at school ) But I've found that cross training with some grappling really supplements what I've already learned. Good luck!

Yeh- that's what these forums are here for, right?

Judo and BJJ
marie curie replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Yes! I had done Judo for a couple years before starting BJJ, and I'd pin someone, thinking I was winning,t hen before I knew it I was armbarred and tapping It took a long time to get used to fighting from my back. In Judo I won a bunch of times at tournaments, pretty much every time by pin. Hehe, that just doesn't cut it when people know how to properly fight from their back! -
Judo and BJJ
marie curie replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Yeh, that all of Judo in BJJ thing is true of some schools and less true of others. My instructor teaches half of the class of traditional judo (and is a black belt and promotes us independently of our BJJ rank according to USJA standards), and the other half of BJJ (which I have yet to promote in, but have at least had the chance to have my butt kicked a couple of times in tourny ). However, the club that he used to teach has changed to a BJJ/no-gi grappling group, so those guys don't really do any Judo at all. Most of their stand-up work is wrestling based. -
In forms in Kajukenbo we do this movement, but I don't think I have any videos... hmmm.. maybe I'll make one this weekend.
-
Agreed! I prefer to train more traditional stuff in a gi, more practical stuff in jeans and shoes, and when it's hot I'd rather wear shorts and a t-shirt
-
Yeh, here is a link to that but I've always seen it used as a step through type of thing.

Judo and BJJ
marie curie replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Yeh, it's kind of funny. Judo and BJJ are plenty different I think that the rules of Judo (no stiff-arming, bending at the waist too much gets you a stalling penalty) make it not too realistic... but BJJ often has you in positions where in a BJJ match you are winning, but on the street you are getting pummeled by fists from above IMHO, If two people are fighting and the rules are closer to BJJ, the BJJ person will win, if the rules are closer to Judo, Judo person will win. -
Hmmm... not at any place I can think of off the top of my head.

Yeh, in Seiei Kan Karate we didn't use them, but we didn't fight full contact, and that was much more comfortable. In TKD we used them, but it was Olympic TKD, so it was a sport anyway, and so practitionars just had to get used to it like in football or hockey. In Kajukenbo, we fight closer to full contact, and, given the proper angle, it can only take 5 lbs of pressure to break a floating rib (and we do lots of "dirty" strikes such as to the floating ribs). Soooo, some do, some don't. I try to make them (They are mostly only 8 months into training) So, good for you, since sometimes to effectively to a "finishing" technique, you have to absorb a strike or two, but yes, quite annoying anyway. -
Good advice! Thanks both of you!

That's exactly what it is. You get more extension and a little more force than a thrust punch. Also, you end up facing a different direction, which, situationally, can sometimes be advantageous.
