Instructing your own children
marie curie replied to white owl's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Yeh, I've seen this before. Unfortunately, the only thing that I've seen help is to be in different classes unless you are their teacher from the very beginning. To be perfectly honest, I have a hard time in a class that my husband teaches, because I've done MA longer than him. Have you and your child been doing MA the same amount of time? Maybe they feel that they're experience is similar to yours and don't think the class is teaching them as much as when it was someone with more experience. Anyway- just a thought -
Oooh baby fishies are always so exciting! Good luck!

rank test how do you figure what to charge?
marie curie replied to jaedeshi's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I think that those are some great considerations. Also- how many ranks are in your system? For example, if there are only 5, the cost may be more than if there are 10. -

I'm looking at grad schools in Nashville, NC (Wake Forest), Oregon, Chicago, Florida (U of), and Delaware. Have any of you guys had a lot of experience in these areas? Could you tell me what any of them are like?

I think it really depends on the kid- I knew a brown belt 12-year-old (about 3 years younger than me) who was one of the best teachers as far as basics and early forms went in my first school. She was incredibly mature, from a family of 6 martial artists in my school (Mom, Dad, and 3 brothers), and was very dedicated. I've also known tons of kids with way higher ranks/responsibilities than I think they were prepared to handle. The problem with this is if there is a general rule "don't promote beyond this rank until this age", people who are prepared may be unnecessarily held back and become bored. The way it is now, people get promoted too early, so it's kind of a trade off, I think.

Does your school/gym do basics in training?
marie curie replied to bushido_man96's topic in Health and Fitness
Yep and it's not scheduled, but it's not random either.... The instructor goes based on what he sees people doing poorly that needs work. -
I agree, for a reality show the producers are probably making a point to pick specific entertaining and conflicting personalities. I think that it has it should be considered, too, that real martial arts vary widely. Some TKD's are very "sport" oriented. Many muy thai schools' workouts look a lot more like that in TUF compared to my school where we fight with nearly the same rules, but we do less "working out" and more technique and we throw in a good bit of traditional stuff too. Anyway, the point is that "real MA" is so broad that you could probably find a group of people for whom their training is basically TUF minus the cameras, and you could also probably find people for whom training is absolutely nothing like it. Just a thought- sorry for the ramble

Oh, shucks- just missed the boat on this one But it's pretty special maaaaybeeee internet-themed anniversary celebration?

Oh all of those places sound wonderful! I have 620 sq ft for my husband, me, our animals, and our stuff, so not much room to play MA in here
