  1. including basic necessities you are often on your own
  2. Congrats! That is wonderful!
  3. I was just trying to think back to my earlier relationships (its been a while) and I remember that renting movies and watching them in my room was the best because we could pause and chat/kiss whatever. Also, there was a park that was nice to go to.
  4. My fiance and I really enjoy hiking, bowling, playing scrabble, going to a baseball game, going to the zoo (my favorite), going to a museum, playing catch, playing tennis at the local park, riding bikes. Going to a movie or restaurant is good, but beware- it can get horribly repetitive.
  5. Along these lines.... yes I think that in competition MA/MMA body kicks are fine, but the last time a fought some Tang Soo Do girl, I know that I almost messed up her knee (dumb other styles not conforming completely to my style's rules if they are fighting me) because if you kick me in the body, it had better be 1. In a place (competition) that wont let me grab that foot/leg 2. So hard that you send me flying acrosss the room before I can grab you 3. So hard that you break a SIGNIFICANT number of bones to stop me 4. So fast that I can't catch it (remember, I saw you start kicking from the ground and arms are faster than legs to begin with) Soooo, if you are trying to get me DQ'd from a tourny... body kicks are a great plan
  6. Yeh, it's really funny and almost frustrating to watch, when we work so hard on technique. But what works for you is best for you, and this obviously works for him. The physical principals are sound- "like you are swinging a bag of quarters" or something like that, seriously increasing the speed and thus power at the end of that punch. What I can't figure out is how he is getting, what is almost a haymaker, passed professional fighters' defenses.
  7. That sounds like a wonderful experience! Congrats on finding a place that makes you so happy!
  8. We still have to pay for vaccinations and antibiotics if we get pneumonia. I think society is a world away from complementary stuff to protect us by. edit*** at least here in the States- I realize that some societies have complementary protection from the most common and spreadable death stuff
  9. I'm with Jay, I think the article is great, but the title is off. I went to my first tourny in Judo after half a class (teachers desire, and it was only 15 bucks) and I was prepared to turtle and close my eyes, but I ended up beating everyone in my division... all of whom had at least 1 year of I was stronger than at the time. Just my experience, but that's all I've got to share
  10. I like using Japanese because it makes me feel cool I just think its fun. Also, it helps set a different tone from "outside" to "training".
  11. Haha, that was actually what I was thinking about for my post, but I couldn't remember how it went
  12. I think of each contact from the attacker as a separate event, so yes, I'll punch after they hit me, but it is to prevent the next strike, not in retaliation of the previous.
  13. I think that what they mean by conditioning/endurance is physical fitness (actually I think that conditioning covers it as it is an umbrella term for conditioning your body to do the things physically that you may need to do), and that's at the top for the MMA fighter. Honestly the only fight that I've ever had outside of the dojo- I didn't use much physical fittness... I was hit, I turned around and kicked him in the nose (he was low) before I even had time to think about it, and he wasn't interested in messing with me anymore. The only other encounter I had was being grabbed at the wrist and pulled by a "homeless" guy here on the street. I did one quick and simple escape, and a pushing punch as I began bolting in the other direction. Of course, if you are going to go 12 rounds with someone in the bar, it's a different story, but if you just want to "survive" the encounter, one can generally stun someone with just a couple of moves and then leave. Just MHO, though.
  14. Wow, what an experience.... also 4200!? Note to self: Loose principals and respect for martial arts, open school, order lots of black belts..$$
  15. As far as slow kicks go, I just know that I was waaaay better at them when I was more flexible.
  16. I don't know exactly what is meant by "physical fitness". Strength? Agility? Aren't conditioning and endurance part of it, too?
  17. IMHO, Defending is not when I get punched and then attack- that is not self-defense; that is revenge. Defending is when I get punched at then attack. When I defend myself I am taking a preventative measure against becoming a victim. Although, I never really thought of it offense/defense, I think of it as defense/punishment, because I don't attack people unless they attack me... disliking jail and such...
  18. Oops, I had a couple of things mixed up- I knew about Barnett, but that was right after Fertitta brothers came in, so it wasn't yet the UFC in its current incarnation, but I had no idea that Tim Silvia had! Thanks for the good info shinbushi!
  19. tke 010, on behalf of a student who takes MA for free, thanks for providing the service!
  20. I think that on Pardon the Interruption (please correct me if I'm wrong- I get sports shows mixed up sometimes) a few days ago the reporters were actually discussing a lack of testing in golf. I don't understand- it seems like a basic thing that all sports should drug test.
  21. ok, so the nutrients that you loose are really negligible. It's been proven to not affect performance. also, the chem's released have as many negative as positive effects, trade raw aggression for mental clarity and focus... but to be honest that stuff lasts like 20-90 mins, (I'll try to find a reference link later when I have more time) so just don't do it like an hour before competing and you should be fine **edit** this is not from personal experience or anything, its from reading published scientific research and from studying physiology.. again I'll find a link when I have some time to search
  22. I think- and maybe its because I've been on the college-ish scene for a while, but whatever- that you can usually find a black belt in something that is willing to teach you for the cost of being his uke I've been taking Kajukenbo, Judo, and TKD from people for free for years now. You just have to search them out. The kajukenbo guy above my instructor even came to do a seminar with us for a free dinner and transportation. Now if you want to promote in something thru an organizaion, yeh it can get costly.
