  1. Welcome!
  2. I make combinations ahead of time, then shadowbox them, then they just come natually
  3. Neosporin or some other healing agent?
  4. I would go with what your son wants. Does he mind? He's a teenager, right? Part of MA is life lessons, like "when do I really need to speak up?".
  5. Yes, avoiding certain activities can increase crankiness, but but also decreases focus. In studies they've shown that it really has not effect. also Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness 35: 3:(SEP 1995):214-217 http://www.drmirkin.com/fitness/8501.html http://www.irishhealth.com/index.html?level=4&id=1067
  6. Awwww I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers.
  7. I used to get really nervous, too. What helped me most was sitting down and writing out how it was going to go. They guy was going to say "hajime" and I'd immediately do a side kick, cross step right punch to the chest block whatever he's throwing....from any punch to the face that he does, I do this, etc. Of course, the moment that the match starts, it all goes out the window, but I've spent so much time envisioning myself beating him and I feel confident that one of my combinations will pop up (i usually shadowbox them the night before) that the match is not "something that's going to happen", but "something I'm going to do".
  8. for kaju- probably snapkick to the groin
  9. does anyone have a vid of this?:
  10. Welcome to the forums!
  11. I like the kama. I don't know any really good katas though Possibly you could learn some "flashy" ones, and get down how to handle them smoothly, then do your own. I know some tourny's have an entire division for your own katas.
  12. Welcome! I'm sure you will be decent if you put your mind to it. I have crappy knees and my instructor lets me "sit-out" of things that I can't do, and by that I mean that I get something else that I can do
  13. The important thing is that you stretch for a while before and after. That way neither are going to have a significant negative effect on your flexibility.
  14. i had this same problem in my bjj class! I just asked one of the higher ups to spend some extra time with me. He was happy because once you teach it, you really know it, right? Eventually I got to point where I had just put in so many hours and done the moves so very many times (plus had some one on one tips) that I was actually getting things before most of the others!
  15. Oh wow, thanks! I was out of town for family hot dogs and such, and I come back to such a nice surprise as the rainbow under my name
  16. i think bushido man hit the nail on the head. I don't know if I'm ADD or anything, but I do have a short attention span and drift off/get bored easily. I've always had pretty understanding teachers, like one once asked me a question in the tradition of "What is that technique called?" and is wasn't until after two "Jennifer!"s that I realized he was talking to me. I then apologized and told him that I was thinking about soup, which caused quite a bit of a chuckle and now he asks me when I seem to get distracted- Jennifer- are you thinking of soup? Anyway, many instructors could get mad or even offended by such a situation. Just make sure that you've got someone who is patient and can enjoy a person for who they are.
  17. I think changing your routine is will come about naturally when you get bored.
  18. 12. What are the goals that they concentrate on? Competition, Self-Defense, personal enrichment (discipline, etc) 13. Do students spend time together after class?
  19. I voted yes, but, I believe they are only really a good option once the guy is on the ground. Previous to that only kick below the waist.
  20. Hey, Welcome to the forums! Like Fry said, starting out in 3 diff MA could be difficult (earlier on is more difficult to separate "we stand like this here, we stand like that there"). Speaking as someone with a bit of experience and in a similar training situation at the moment, I recommend that you keep it to one grappling and one striking art. What you learn will be different enough to keep everything separate and with two you should still have enough time time to really dedicate to them at home. Good Luck
  21. I maintain that that it was called for and enormously funny.
  22. I think that demos are usually designed to attract people to the school, so showing off is what you'd want to do. If this is just to impress higher-ups, then I don't know why it would be this way, but hey, you should never feel compelled to do something like that that you don't want to do.
  23. Hmm... that's a tough one. There is a lot to each martial art. Possibly you could just show him some of the more benign theory-ish stuff.
