  1. Hiya all. I need help here. I pulled a hammy tonight. Is there any advice anyone can give me about taking care of it or stretches I can do so it doesn't get really "stiff" would really help. What should I do in class to not re-injure it? If you knew me personally, you know I would go to class no matter what, but there's things I won't be able to do. Please help.
  2. I agree Kickchick. The style of TKD I study is an offshoot. But We are certified both in TKD (WTF) and Kung Fu. It's a weird combo, but I've been there long enough to know it's a pretty cool combo. I saw the Shaolin forms that we will be learning, and now I can't wait. I have to learn more about Kung Fu, but what I learned so far is so cool. I also wanna learn Hapkido (besides what my TSD teacher taught us), so I would have to look into the different styles of Hapkido. I don't bash an art for being "new". If it works, then fine, use it. If it doesn't, throw it out. I really like this style TKD. It works for me But yes, there are different orgs and assn's. But if you look at each org or assn, their styles are slightly to way different from each other. I've only known two assn's to be the same, which are TSD (the ITF and the IMA). The rest are noticablely different no matter what style it is.

  6. Hiya Phan. I read about it, and saw programs on MA's and that's what I got from it. I could be wrong, but I pretty sure that's the way they do things.
  7. In the old days of some Japanese styles, one doesn't become grandmaster until their grandmaster dies. Then the most senior student will be the new grandmaster, or be chosen by his/her grandmaster before he passes. In some Ninja styles, there is only one grandmaster. That grandmaster choses who gets that title after years of training and "proving" themselves worthy of the title. In most Korean styles, you have to train for years and years to get to grandmaster. Or make up your own style or assn hehehe Seriously though, I believe it's years of training, and experience. Even the "masters" have to test to get to the next dan. And it takes longer and longer to get to the next dan. That means they also have to train hard for many many years to get to grandmaster.
  8. I did. I learned some Korean, but I got lazy and stopped. I never tried writing in hangul, though. I wanna start back up soon (hopefully).
  9. I hate it when people come in and ask "ASL" (age, sex, location). It's mostly people who wanna cyber ggggrrrrr. So I say "Old enough to know better/what's that?/hell" Or old/it doesn't work/the moon or mars I really hate it when people TALK LIKE THIS. That's yelling. Or people who come in just to start agruments and ruin a nice friendly chat room.
  10. Taikudo, Dang. I forgot Miso soup. I love it. I went to a Japanese restuarant and the cook told us how to make it, so I make it on a weekly basis now. My honey also makes sushi (he learned from the same guy). This cook was nice enough to show us, so we also eat at his restuarant, at least, every two weeks. I usually get Tariaki (sp?). It's not one of my favs, but it's good. We usually go just for the sushi and miso soup, because it's sooooooo good And, of course, a side of Saki hehehehe

  12. Same here TSDstud. My TSD school had them. There were 3. And 2 bassai's.
  13. Hiya Sai. That was the first time that happened, and the store was empty (it was late), except for three employees, and one of them laughed with us! lol The other two though we were strange, but oh well.
  14. It's the same with TKD. There is so many versions, it's not funny. I study Kwok Wu Chuen TKD (a mix of WTF and kung fu at later ranks). There are Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan, ITF, WTF, ect. Tang Soo Do has a boat load, too. ITF (TSD), IMA, WTF (TSD), .... the IMA and ITF are exactly the same (in forms, techniques ect), too. They should join together lol. I could go on, but it'll take all day lol. So I won't.
  15. I been here on karateforums for a while, but I just noticed this thread. So I guess I'll post hehehehe. I started in Tang Soo Do. I got to 5th gup (blue belt). Then I moved to NY. Now I do TKD. I'm going for my green belt next month (the 14th). Wish me luck
  16. Two of my instructors are 1st dans. And they are great teachers and good friends. I'm learning a lot from them. My master instructor is 7th dan, and he is awsome also. The senior instructor (under the master) is only 3rd dan. They are hard on us about proper technique, ect. They are a very good group of instructors. But then again, we have "helpers" in class (people who help teach, but don't get paid for it). One is really bad at teaching. She's way too pushy (red belt). There's a blue belt who is excellent at teaching, and she is no where near 1st dan. She's a natural, I think. So, I don't think rank as anything to do with it (well, it does in someways). I think it has to do mostly with personality. If you are patient, willing to work with people, and don't get frustrated, then that's the first sign of a good teacher. A good teacher also learns (and willingly) from his/her students.
  17. Hiya Jack. My TSD teacher taught like that. He didn't just tell people to spar. He got right in there with us and sparred. He was too good. I couldn't "get in" on him. He did keep me in his range. I asked him how'd he do that, and he said that he was "reading" me (I was telegraphing too much). He'd just dodge everything I threw at him. He also told me about the distance thing (how to get proper distance). So, I totally agree with you.
  18. Muaythai, Oh, I forgot thai food. Sorry. I donno the thai name for it, but I love the spicy beef. I also like it hot I can't find a Chinese place that makes good General Tou's chicken. It's supposed to be spicy, but I never get it spicy I agree that most Chinese food in America is "Americian-ized" but it's still good hehehehe _________________ Laurie S.   19. Van, I agree. I don't like the Fake stuff either. I tend to like stuff like The Guest, because the fights were realistic (no flying) or the Best of The Best. Very realistic fights.
  20. What's everyone's favorite asian dish (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean or one from each)? Korean: My fav is Bul go gi .... Korean BBQ'ed beef, with kimchi, and Saki on the side. I'm addicted to Korean food. I was told by a Korean waiter that I was weird, because not many Americans like kimchi, but I ask for seconds, and thirds of it hehehehe I buy it in bulk from the Korean store here in NY. I love it. I also shop there regularly for groceries. Chinese: I like all kinds of Chinese food. Not as addicted to it as I am Korean food, though. Japanese: Sushi, saki
  21. Masamune, I'm addicted to Sake lol. I don't like the cheap stuff though. I like the spensive stuff from Japan, the good stuff. The stuff in the black bottle with no english words on it except the word SAKE lol.
  22. OMG!!! You are so lucky. I saw him at one of our tournies, too. It was a International Martial Arts Assn tourny, but he is good buds with my former grandmaster, so they usually attend each other's tournies. Anyway, he did a demo of knife defenses after my school did their demo. He was awsome. I'd love to meet him someday, eventhough I do TKD now. I do miss TSD, and I still practice my TSD forms. I'm teaching myself pyung ahn sa dan (which should have been my next form before I moved).
  23. Here's one for ya. My man and I got into a sparring match in the middle of Wegmans (super market) tonight lol. We got strange looks but we were kicking the crap outta each other and laughing at the same time. I guess people didn't know wether to call security or a patty wagon lol. We busted out laughing and walked away
