  1. Me? I'm sitting on my arse watching TV playing on the computer hehehehehe. I should be practicing my new form that I learned yesterday. Oh and I should be cleaning too
  2. Same here KSN. We don't "practice" breaking during classes. We have a breaking clinic twice a year, and we break on tests only (other than tournies). We are suposed to be focusing on our technique during class, then if we have good technique when the tests rolls around, we'll have no problem breaking. But then, again, I seen two people last testing date that couldn't break because they lacked technique (and failed), and these two were red belts. Oh if you like sparring, we spar regularly once a week on our "B" days (step sparring and sparring ...... "A" days are forms and self defense). _________________ Laurie S. 3. Wow! Shoto, I'm movin to your country or Taikudo's. I pay $100 a month. I live (well the area where the school is) is every "yuppie" where the "well-off" people with money live, so I would have to go to Rochester to get cheaper rates, but I really like my school. I did find a Shotokan school that charges $60 to $70 a month, and they offer a lot more than my school does, but it's an hour away.
  4. I just wanted to know if there is any NY poeples here (Besides kickchick I know she's from NY )
  5. LOL Koreantiger. Good one. I should have thought of that. But you are totally right.
  6. Hey Drew. You are perfect for TKD. Lotta kicks, plus it'll help with "touching your toes". But make sure you find a school that's legit. Watch out for McDojangs (money mill schools). There's a lot of those in TKD, which give my school and a few others a bad name.
  7. Hiya Tiger. You'll be suprised who misses lol. I have and I've been breaking for a year now. I wasn't focused, and I missed with a side kick (no laughing .... yes I missed on a side kick ). As far as accuracy goes, it's only a little piece of wood (9 by 12 I think), and with someone's fingers holding it, you have to concentrate on the middle of the board or you'll hit the fingers, not the board (been there, done that, had it happen to me), and you won't break it. That's my experience with it anyways.
  8. Breaking is FUN I love it. Seriously, it's mainly to test your accuracy and technique. Breaking shows you how to focus on your target. You have to focus on your target or you'll hit your partner's fingers and you won't break. And if your technique isn't good, you won't break. You'll just bounce off the board ...... ouch Been there, done that, and it hurts lol. Power breaking is used to test your power. Speed breaking is to test your speed. But, again, if your accuracy and technique is off ..... ouch.
  9. My short term goal is to improve as a martial artist. Practice hard, and soak up everything. My long term goal is to teach. I had the pleasure of teaching at my last school (not paid but well worth it). When you teach a kid how to do a kick and they do it right. Their faces light up and say "I did it!" It's the coolest feeling in the world
  10. I'm the fanatic, BJJ hehehehehehe Anyway, there was a girl in my last school who did two sports and MA. She took class 2 days a week, and I guess that fit into her schedule (on top of high school). We also had a junior instructor who did soccer and taught (on top of high school), and she was bad at juggling her schedule. So, I guess it depends on the person. It depends on how much you can handle.
  11. Hey TKD. What's on the CD? Is it just forms and term, or does it have self defense, step sparring, ect on it?
  12. I agree with ya, Phantasmatic. There isn't a ultimate martial art. There's only the ultimate martial artist. One who trains hard several times a week, and bust there butt to become good at their chosen art.
  13. My brother in law and I have a saying, "COOOOFFFEEEEE!!!!" We both love our coffee. I like regular (full octane, no decaf ....yuk) with a little bit of milk and sugar, french vanilla, or cap. I used to drink tons of coffee (about 4 to 6 cups a day), but I cut back (at the most, 3 cups a day. Usually just 2 in the morning). I also drink a lot of water, power drinks (gatorade, ect for class), juices, (not too picky on flavors, but it has to be the real stuff, not the "fake flavor" stuff), and beer hehehehehe. That's the only un-healthy thing I drink roughly once a week.
  14. Hiya all. I train in WTF TKD now. I fight with hands up. That's how I was taught in TSD. So I brought it to my TKD training. When I spar (in TKD), I noticed some people keep their hands up (block, punch, strike, ect), but some don't. I can score easy on the people who don't keep their hands up. I guess it depends on the person fighting.
  15. I started in TSD in NJ (took it for a year and a half almost), then I moved. I loved TSD, and I wanted to find something similar (because there wasn't any TSD here). I looked at a few schools in my area (which were what I would call Mcdojangs .... eeeekkkk). But I did find a TKD school that seemed to be "traditional" in the sence of the way they trained (hard work, working to perfect technique, ect). So I signed up. I only have one gripe about the school. They don't show self defense enough, but everything else is cool. Plus I should add that I'm a kicker hehehehe. I use a lot of hand techniques, but you can tell that I'm a kicker if you watch me spar
  16. Hiya all. Lemme know what you think of this. I take TKD. My school tests roughly every two months. They say it takes about 3 years to reach BB in this school. I've been there only 4 months and I'll be a green belt at the end of May. Maybe because of my previous training??? That's 5 grades in 5 months (white belt, white yellow strip, yellow belt, yellow with green stripe, green belt, ect.). But they say for someone with out experience tests roughly every three months ... for new belt, not grade. Grading (stripes) are done whenever someone is ready, not at test times. Tests (for new belt) are scheduled every two months. I heard the black belt tests are tough. The master instructor is REALLY picky about technique. And someone (one of my black belt friends) said that you can't even hesitate while doing a form or you fail. When you break, you have to break on the first shot or fail. When you do self defence, if you don't get out of a hold or defend properly, you fail. But it's not this rough for regular belt tests. But, on the flip side, if you want to be an instrutor (they have a course that specially made for people who wanna be instructors), you can get your 2nd dan in 3 years. But it also costs a pretty penny for the course, so very few people sign up for it. 3 outta 50 (adults) of green belts and under signed up. I donno about the others (blue belts and above) because I'm not in that class (advanced) yet. Sorry if I confused you. I tried to explain everything in a short post. Sorry all. Needless to say, I'M confused (about my schools testing stuff) lol. _________________ Laurie S. [ This Message was edited by: karatekid1975 on 2002-04-10 08:13 ]
  17. Hiya KoreanTiger. I fight with my right side forward. I'm right handed and my right side is more powerful. I use a lot of front leg kicks, so I put my "power side" forword. My left is quicker. To do back leg kicks, you have to be quick, so I put my quicker side back.
  18. I perfer to use front leg kicks. They are quicker and less "telegraphed." If I wanna do some damage, I'll use my back leg, but I have to be really quick.
  19. I know this forum is kinda old, but it was soooo funny. I have a few for ya. We were doing our warm-up stretches, and when we got to the "v" stretch ... the one you sit with your legs stretched in a "v" and stretch to the left, right, then to the front. Well when we stretched to the front, someone let loose. The floor we had was the "raised" wooden, spring loaded ones, so the whole floor shook. The "noise" came from a black belt, and he turned cherry red. He couldn't deny it because he was sooooo red. The bad thing was, I was sitting right behind him!!!! The smell teared my eyes. Everyone was laughing except me who was about to pass out. When I was a green belt, my belt was really too long, but I was too lazy to ask for a new one. Well, we were doing spinning jump kicks. I did a 360 roundhouse (tornato kick) and my belt came up and whacked me in the right eye, and my pony tail whipped around and whacked me in the left eye. Needless to say I couldn't see very well for the rest of the class. I learned to hold my belt down before jumping, and tying my hair in a bun instead of a pony tail Another black belt was showing off after class. He was jumping over targets and kicking the heavy bag (the hanging ones). He was attemping a jump flying side kick .... well he didn't jump high enough. He made it over the targets, but landed on his side UNDER the bag Good thing he wasn't hurt because we couldn't hold back the laughter. My instructor managed to say "you missed" between laughter and holding his tummy from laughing so hard
  20. I used to play drums, and I dabbled with the guitar. Now I just do martial arts, and listen to music
  21. Hiya. At first, it did matter to me. When I was progressing in rank, it showed me that my instructor thought I was good enough to go on to the next rank. The higher I got, though, I never got the "ego trip" (which some people do). But it seems like I "woke up" after getting my green belt. I just started to improve my technique. When it was time to test for my blue belt, I didn't want to test, because I feel I wasn't ready. I thought I wasn't ready, because (to me) my technique was still poor. Now, it still means something, but it's not as important as improving my technique and skill.
  22. LOL TKD. That was a good one.
  23. I agree Jack. I don't mean to "dis" your friend, but he shouldn't be pickin fights for the "fun of it." This might sound really harsh, but one day he could pick a fight with someone bigger, faster, and quicker and get hurt.
