  1. If he is better on the ground than you keep standing up. Okay if you get tackled then you have go to ground but fight the fight that you fight best and that he fights worst. Try not to hit him unless it will hurt him because that is how you get tired. I think a big factor is fitness okay if you keep doing what you are your fitness will improve but so will his so you got to do extra. Generally once people are tired they are easy targets
  2. Weighing more is a good thing you will hit harder. I only weigh 125 pounds but I feel that I can hit pretty hard, im going to try to get my weight up to 140 so I can hit harder. There are two things that constitute hitting hard. Power=velocity x force This means punching power or energy transfered over a certain time is what will hurt the opponent. First Force as we know is acceleration x mass so the more mass you put into the punch the harder you hit. Lean more into the punch which will put more mass behind it however if you are sparring be aware of this commitment. You need to make sure your punch continues to accelerate until it reaches the target. Unlike a push where all of the energy is at the beginning of the technique and dissipates. A punch gains kinetic energy throughout the distance of its travel. Therefore it should have its maximum energy at the end. In other words make sure you are following through the target dont back off its not a push thats probably where the power is being lost. Velocity is also the other factor in power which is related the the acceleration that causes the force. So another way to hit more powerfully is to just hit faster. The speed of your punch basically relies on body allignment. Your body allignment basically should be pivot on the balls of your feet, push from the floor using your strong quadriceps (if you are a good kicker you probably have the potential to hit hard), snap your hips using the push from the floor then the waist should twist then the shoulders just when the shoulders are starting to move fire your punch. Add a snap in your wrist if you punch vertically snap your wrist from a downward position upwards, if you punch horizontally push your wrist down and screw your forarm. keeping your elbow down for good body mechanics. Hope that helps I got a little carried away
  3. It is no different to any other belt in this way
  4. Ying and Yang im going to make a statement here as far as I am concerned the mind and the spirit are the same thing
  5. Interesting question. I have to say if i am answering this honestly it doesnt mean a lot to me nowdays im afraid. When I see people that have just paid their way to blackbelt or acheived it in 1 year then it just degrades the meaning of the belt. I dont really believe in rank anymore. I suppose answering your other question black belt really is when you start to refine your skills. I mean your basics should be very good at this point and this is when you really pick up the subtle things. I think it is just a step along a long chain because you cant call yourself a master when you are still learning. Master implies faultlessness as you are still learning you cannot be a master. To sum up for me it means expert of the basics.

  7. You dont ever know that you are dead. If you belive in life after death then thats your choice thats a different thing all together. But if you are like me and think you just die and nothing becomes off you. You wont ever know you are dead you are just gone the machine has been turned of so really there is nothing to fear.
  8. I personally think you should get back into your distance running. It will help you loose weight and you will be doing something you have done before and it will also suppliment your MA. Buy a good pair of running shoes and just get out there and take it easy at first. After a few weeks of this and martial arts you will feel a lot fitter which will obviously reduce your chances of getting injured.
  9. Well I havent noticed any although I have never taken it regularily enough i.e more than 2 weeks I have been lazy with my workouts recently as you can tell. If your worried about that then take it with skimmed milk or water although i have to say those options dont really appeal to me.

  11. Well by the sounds of it if you wish to be able to do static exercises such as holding your legs up by head then actually it is more flexibility than strength that you need. From personal experience i have more than sufficient strength to hold it there if i can get it up there. Work on your leg flexibility. Also do leg raises to build a little more strength standing leg raises ie try and get your leg to touch your shoulder. Other strength and endurance exercises that i think are particularly good are squats with the barbell loaded up or burpees which build endurance im sure Bushido man would recommend these he used to talk about them lots .
  12. I want to see if everyone uses the same method for generating power so......how does everyone get power into their techniques name the technique and then explain your method for generating power in that attack. Off you go!

  16. Very difficult question after you have been trained in grappling. Personally I think that grabbing his finger etc would take too long and he would have hit you by the time you manage to do this. I think I actually would just hit him first and then use pressure points eye gouges etc even may pull their hair or ears im pretty sure someone would get off you if your pulling some delicate part of their head.
  17. I think in competition its nervousness but not really fear on the streets the majority or what you are feeling is fear.
  18. Paper means nothing any fool can write about being a master etc. Belts mean about the same nowadays they lost their meaning when martial arts became mainstream. If someone says they are a black belt nowdays I dont think a lot until I actually see them visually in action or feel them hit me haha. That way I know how good they are. I disagree with the fact with people starting their own systems now after the JKD concepts. People tend to start their own system and call themselves a master of so and so when actually they are not very skilled, they just in essence want to make money and this is what martial arts have turned into its a service now very few schools exist just to pass on the skills there is always a money motive as far as I am concerned okay the people have to live but I think its the love of what we do should be more important money should be needed to live not to want from people you are teach. There are too many systems and styles as there is in martial arts there should be no more Everyone has there own interpretation of martial arts and their own theories and what works which follows the JKD concepts. I therefore don't think someone beginning their own system now would be any different from the systems and concepts we have now. I think what Bruce gave us was what he said, it was everything that we had igrnored. He just put the pieces that made the puzzle that everyone didn't try to complete because they stuck to their own system.

He is also on a new tour in 2008 so hopefully I am going to be able to see him live.
