  1. I shall thanks tallgeese
  2. Very Interesting MMA Jim. I actually had no idea such things were allowed. I mean eye strikes and groin kicks? Are you talking about very early ufc here or another organization? because I really want to check out some of these matches. I take it this was back in the day when everyone's 'styles' were being tested again one another.
  3. Grappling Art. Actually in the higher stages of shotokan there are a lot of grappling moves. These can be seen in kata such a kanku sho. I was taught a lot of grappling stuff at my school but you may not. Judo I find is usually good for throwing but a bit basic for actually rolling around on the ground with people. For that you really need BJJ.
  4. Yea its a shame I can't afford to go to the gym. I have just built a new computer for university thus do not have the money to afford the £100 term gym membership unfortunatly. I have heard great things about them. Im actually looking forward to the challenge of not going to the gym I concentrate better at home and I want to prove I can get myself in better shape than I ever was going to the gym. Its going to be a combination of weighted bodyweight exercises, kettlebells, punchbag work and isometrics on my home made isometric station.
  5. Who owns one? I have just purchased my first one after hearing great things about them. I can't afford an expensive term gym membership so have decided to just buy myself a kettlebell and train at home with my other equipment.
  6. Bruce Lee had about 5 kicks that he drilled relentlessly. An accumulation of techniques is pointless. You don't need that many. you would never be able to have the skill level you could only drilling 5 or so.
  7. Such as what? The reason fighters were initially put in cages was to keep certain people from running away. What significant changes occur that should lead someone to end a fight so quickly on the street as opposed to the cage? This of course is still assuming unarmed combat, as the vast majority of street fights are. I understand that you think a fight should be ended quickly in theory but there is a significant different between theory and practice. Very true, theory and practice are very different and of course you must prepare in case you are unable to take them out quickly. I'm not saying that every fight will end quickly but the objective would be to take them out as soon as possible which could be enhanced by the following factors. Factors which could shorten the fight. Hard Ground Shoes Walls Eye Gouging Groin Strikes Throat Strikes and Grabbing Finger Manipulations Stomping on a downed opponent. Strikes to the back of the head Hair manipulation Biting Maiming
  8. MMA Jim. Im not going to quote you as your post is very long. However I am just going to say that on the street regardless if there are two professional fighters going at it one should have still taken the other out very quickly due to the things they are able to do that in competition they cannot.
  9. It looks amazing. The only thing is, if you can get it to run office. If it can do that then it will be of great use to me. Otherwise I will stick with my iPhone
  10. There are not really any. If you fire the punch straight the fist has angular momentum upon impact not forwards momentum. If you are turning and then turning over your fist then there may be some benefit but it will be minimal.
  11. I would probably try to intercept. Possibly with a leg Jam.
  12. The JKD grappling wasn't really developed to a high standard. Bruce had about 36 different moves but never taught anyone. He had Judo experience from Gene LeBell. There are some grappling moves however its very limited compared to say Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.
  13. With any art you are essentially at a disadvantage when against multiple people. I also don't think a particular 'art' claimed anything, the fighters did. There are good and bad practitioners in all arts. Also people may disagree with me but most street fights don't last 3 rounds of 5 mins. In the street a fight is generally over within a few shots, or it should be your tools are unlimited. The UFC is a good measure of skill but practically it is still limited. Some of the best weapons are not available. Fighting for your life is very different to organized competition.
  14. I don't know what you mean. In our style, fighting stance is a distinct stance, just like zenkutsu dachi or shico dachi means a specific thing. Our fighting stance is pretty much how KarateGeorge describes the fighting stance in his style. It does vary a bit depending on the sparring match, but mostly I think the variety comes from rhythm and timing more than changing up the stance. Not that I'm a sparring expert, but it seems to me that if you change the leading leg using unpredictable timing and distancing, you are getting a lot of variation even with the basic form of the stance staying the same. I think of it as the more beginning students sparring with a "pop" music rhythm, predictable, whereas a good fighter spars with the timing of a jazz musician. I refer to that as fighting "on the beat" or "off the beat"...that's kind of my own terminology though, so I highly doubt that's official lingo. When working with a beginning student on sparring, a lot of times they'll fight at a predictable rhythm, as people get to be better fighters, they'll use a non-predictable rhythm, changing both the speed of techniques as well as the pattern of striking locations to keep their opponent guessing. Your terminology is good. Bruce Lee used the same for when he used broken rhythm. We tend to use on the beat, and the half beat. You can also strike after or before full or half beats.
  15. Very True. However I know that the fighting stance is usually optimum in terms of defense and readiness. Once a technique is executed you should immediately return to the fighting stance. This does not mean that you cannot adapt it. In JKD we tend to open up the stance once we get into in fighting whereas at long range we are very closed and mobile.
  16. Actually I lie. I have changed my mind about this kick. It so seems the JKD rear spinning kick is thrown very similar. At 0.09 Bruce Lee fighting an extra on set. Sijo is proof enough. He doesn't look either.
  17. Shadow Boxing if your on your own Sparring Drills. Gear up and agree to only work on your lateral movement your opponent is thus only allowed to attack straight.
  18. Good post sensei. This is something I need to do more in my training. Also I will try to have a look at those books mentioned earlier.
  19. Not really. You really should be proficient in all ranges. Grappling arts have their place. However against multiple attackers its easier to hit and run then try and dodge others while tackling someone on the ground.
  20. Ah okay I understand a little better now. I think having a female partner is a good idea for the time being. I think in a way its just a confidence type thingy once you know you will be okay after you have done the drill a few times you don't feel so bad. If you want to do a different style then thats great do what you think is the most effective for you.
  21. I assume you want cardio to lose weight. Sure it is one tool. But remember weights burn calories too. Sometimes more. Circuit training could be a good solution for your problem but im not sure what your home setup is like so could be tricky. Honestly I wouldn't bother with crunches and situps. Good old pushups, dips and one legged squats will do the trick. They all require core stabilization anyway. If you want to do direct core work then do planks and work up to one arm one leg planks fro 2x30s. Start slowly and best of luck.
  22. Haha dude I made one of those pulley stretchers. Do you have a link to the one you bought as I think it would probably be better than the one I made. I honestly didn't know you could buy them. I copied mine from Bruce Lees design.
  23. My personal opinion on this and this is only my point of view. Too many people are concerned on the end and not the means. Growth and improvement should be the goal. Although harder to measure it is the better goal to pursue. Sure aim for blackbelt but don't aim for being as good as the others. Aim to be better than your teacher.
  24. Im having a bit of a hard time understanding. I don't think I have ever had that problem. It is just a control issue when working at full speed? You say you get freaked out I guess this could be because you don't trust your partner which is maybe why you feinted. I wouldn't worry about that it can happen it seems panic related. Remember proper breathing is an important part of the martial arts Its not necessarily a bad attribute to have. If someone attacks you and you clock him then job done really. You always feel bad for hurting your partner but it will happen again I guarantee it. I think you should stick where you are for the time being. I don't think a different place would solve a problem like this.
  25. Haha yea its wicked. I think they took his GOD footage and mixed it with a impersonator for certain bits. Pretty Slick
