  1. Sensei you have caused me a problem. Like what was said people come up and ask me what style do I do? I usually say Jeet Kune Do because its easy to do so. This question is essentially the cause of all the debating in JKD has been going on for years. 1] Which one is your style's organization a proponent of? The way JKD is taught to me is like a methodology but its not supposed to be, the supposed method without method. 2] Which one are you a proponent of? Well generally methodolgy but I have tried to branch out as I know it was not intended to be. 3] Which one is your martial art based on? Im gonna say ideology here 4] Which one is your martial arts dependant on? I would say for someone to learn it probably methodology but to really understand it ideology 5] Are they seperate beliefs? I think its an evolution you go through 6] Are they said same beliefs? Maybe in a zen sense they can't be separated 7] Are they interchangable? Very much so 8] Can ones belief survive without the other? Yes 9] Can one become a prisoner of either belief? I guess anyone remember the liberate yourself from classical karate article, alot of people think the article was bashing karate which it wasn't, it was more of you eat pasta all the time and thats fine but at some point you may want to try something else. 10] Does one belief or another truly matter? Once progression has taken place no each to their own. But you do have to start somewhere and that has to be a methodology I think. I tried to answer them as best as I could. But you have to understand that its hard with JKD because of the phillosophical quotes and contradicting them. A simpler answer would be Jeet Kune Do is at once 'this' and 'this'. I hope someone understands my crazyness.
  2. Classic Bruce Lee!Yea for JKDer's they are emphasised so you get good at them. I was actually going to suggest the Rear Naked Choke to add a submission element in. It's pretty much the ONLY grappling move I know how to do yet against people with no grappling experience I find it easy to pull off.
  3. Side Kick to the shin/knee
  4. The choke from behind while being dragged backwards is the hardest thing to get out of. Its very hard it has happened to me and you have to understand if they know how to choke then your not going to get out of it. The distance from your body to theirs is too far to get enough leverage to do much. You can't really take all cases under one banner. If I was a mugger and I desperatly needed the money then a broken finger may not stop me it just depends on the individuals case. What im saying is just don't assume it will stop them thats the biggest mistake you can make. What the guy thought was a simple mugging could turn into an assault. The way most people bite then it may just make the person more angry. If someone bites me I would just hit them harder its just natural. Biting itself is an art, look up Kino Muti. On the other hand if someone takes a big chunk out of my arm or whereever I may just be in shock. Of course you don't know what you could catch but if your life is in danger then it is probably worth it. Prevention will always be better than cure. Good awareness and not putting yourself in a situation where this could happen will serve you much better than any scripted defence.
  5. If I had no other choice I would go for a heavy bag.
  6. Everybody always goes for the heavyweights Sugar Ray Robinson for me.
  7. Unfortunately theres no definate answer. Some people it may stop them others it may not. Its annoying that you would only really know until you tried it. If your going to break something on their hand I would say break their thumb as hands don't really work without it.
  8. Very interesting topic JJN I admit I thought about having the technique done on me rather than using the technique. Im not certain that it shows a victim mentality but more passive thinking. For me it comes from the whole this guy does this to you so you do this then this. Which is usually taught in most martial arts so you get it into your head that you must start from a defensive position.
  9. Haha RNC on a pitbull kudos to him
  10. I was just wondering if any of you guys have any tips for staying relaxed when performing kicks and punches. Im not especially good at this and really need help even though I have been doing martial arts for a long time I still tense way too much, both mentally and physically. I think my need to punch faster actually harms my speed. When punching in combinations I tend to be fine just top speed single movements I find hard.
  11. Just because im a little bit partial even though I don't do karate anymore Kanazawa is the best I have seen, I have the Kumite Book back when I did karate. I have the urge to do some again haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQPjg_aw0g0 Oh and whats that in the middle cheeky little armbar I also love the kani basami take down that he uses if my japanese is correct. Keep them coming
  12. The aptly named wrestlers bridge as forementioned should help you a great deal. Also I find upright rows are good for the trapezoid/lower neck area. Necks are one of the most painful things to pull so just recover well and some light stretching through the day along with heat should loosen that area up. Hope you enjoy your next class
  13. As I do Jeet Kune Do, there are very little formalites. Some schools will include a bow at the beginning but to tell the truth I don't even know how to do it. It is not enforced at all. We arrive we get straight into training and then we go home. I pretty much like it that way plus I very much like the fact we train in shoes thats one of the best aspects. We do still refer to our teacher as sifu, but there is no lining up in rank order or anything. Nobody in the room really knows anyone elses rank its on a bit of paper somewhere at home. I hear back when Bruce Lee was teaching Jun Fan he was very formal, this can be seen in a number of photos. He always wore tradition chinese attire, insisted that younger students respected older ones as their seniors. Rank was given on a how long you have been training basis. Its strange for a man that was trying to liberate people from tradition he was very traditional.
  14. I guess im just overly wary of what can happen. The thing is I think it may probably occur from a lack of confidence looking at the potential negative rather than the positive. Im not the best martial artist ever but then again im not the worst and I should be able to take care of myself. Personally when I had that epiphany I was just rather disapointed that my study hasn't helped me much in that respect.
  15. That is a very funny example. I find Mr. Lesner a bit more intimading than Ronnie Coleman. I feel I can atleast out run Ronnie Coleman. lolI was thinking this, plus that picture of Coleman is hilarious. His head is too small for his body
  16. OMG someone else knows my nightmare! My pain flares up a few times a year and when it does, I'm done. I've gotten good and nursing it back but when it pulls I know I'm not going to sleep very well that night. More Deadlift
  17. I got kicked in the shin the other day actually, I haven't been able to do anything for 5 days which is annoying as the weather is so nice. Swelling is getting better though. Just used the RICE technique been good training for my left leg though so in that way I don't mind so much.
  18. I agree and I wasn't trying to justify excuses. Lots of people are bad with there time, myself 100% included. We should try to overcome obstacles and its good of you to inspire people in that way. Simply put at some point priorities take over. You may have to work late and getting to class is impossible because earning a living is more important. Martial Arts for most people are a luxury not a necessity.
  19. To me this is an interesting subject. In martial arts you often hear claims from most instructors especially the ones that teach kids that martial arts will lead to enhanced character bulding qualities. Things such as, self discipline, confidence, respect, self responsability, self awareness are plastered all over posters usually advertising martial arts schools. The way that it is usually implied is that all you aspects of you life will be enhanced by doing martial arts. I read this on a poster the other day just walking down the road. I actually stopped an thought to myself is this actually true. I actually thought that there was no difference to myself at all in this respect. It has effected me in class. Im much better at coordinating myself now than when I started, im more confident when it comes to sparring different people, im more humble when it comes to getting beat or losing and im always disciplined and polite listen to the instructure etc etc. But when it comes to application in real life as they so claim nothing could be further from the truth. In fact I have probably become more paranoid. Im always wary walking down the road late at night. Im still not particularily good at receiving criticism in other aspects of life. Im not particularily disciplined and in fact am quite lazy sometimes. My confidence has not particulary increased in my own opinion from martial arts. It has increased more from other aspects I have progressivly got less shy as I have got older but nothing to do with martial arts. I can't fight anyone who criticises me or embaresses me. So I fail to see that application. Im have always been very polite, nice but probably introverted. It just annoys me sometimes when these things are claimed as 'you will GAIN .......' when in no uncertain terms its just not that simple.
  20. You will just have to see if this is a one off thing or a reoccuring thing. If it is a reoccuring thing then it may be worth taking up a strength building program to help you. From my reading on the subject most lower back injuries muscular and spinal are actually due to weak abdominal muscles. Your rectus abdominus actoually goes all the way round your midsection so it supports your back to acertain extent as well. But then again as before it could just be a one off injury which happen to all of us.
  21. This was going to be my observation its not so much the time doing the actual activity its the time doing the rest of the stuff that comes with the activity. I have to say that honestly I miss class a lot often because going to a one hour class turns into a 5 hours travelling affair. You have to come back, shower, prepare food, eat food, sit down if you have been on your feet all day its a must, pack your bag, travel to the station which is a half hour walk. Then get the train, the walk to training, after which you are knackered, and then travel all the way back. Then still afterwood you have work to do. Just using myself as an example its not always practical to go. It very much depends on a persons situation. Thing is I agree that as a teacher you want a certain amount of commitment from the person. However if you are doing it as a business then it really doesn't matter to you if they attend or not, you are still making a living. Provided they are paying through a contract.
  22. Im totally with you on this one. I think we have discussed this before actually im not the tallest dude ever so I stuggle the same. I don't know what it is about height that bothers me so much. I have confidence in my ability but just maybe not enough. Grappling is a tentative subject. I have been worried ever since a good mate of mine tapped me out within 5 sec of just us rolling on the floor. That was not good but equally I have done a bit more work in this department so I can kinda get by. Thing is if I were up against someone with a decent amount of bjj or even wrestling im not sure how I would cope.
  23. I know we get everything so late on. IM looking forward to Toy Story 3. I think I also heard they were planning a rerelease of the original in 3D.
  24. What others have said is pretty good. Slow release complex carbohydrates. Most important lots and lots of water. You need to hydrate well at least the night before. Scientists have actually found out it takes about 5 days to get to a proper level of hydration. Take an isotonic drink with you to prevent cramping. You need to look this up to make sure but off the top of my head. Pinch of Salt Pinch of Sugar 250ml Orange Juice 750ml of Water Adjust if you want more than a litre which you probably will. Have Fun
  25. Two websites for you to play with BeastSkills.com Bodyweightculture.com Crossfit is one that is very good. Also RossTraining.com is good, he used to be a boxer so pretty good for the old martial arts specifically here.
