point fighting
monkeygirl replied to Martial Law's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Yes, I'd much rather point spar than go for knockouts. I've never been knocked out and don't inted to start any time soon! Due to an eye injury, I really can't afford any extra cranial trauma/brain damage. Another good thing about point fighting is that it focuses on a different set of skills. Point sparring takes speed, accuracy and--here's the most important part--control. It's a more artistic form of fighting in many ways, and gives you more depth as a fighter. Point sparring can often make you a better knockout fighter...since it's at a faster pace, it improves your reaction time. I'll move this to the Sport MA forum -
Tammy "Adventure" Mcbeth You invented the word 'adventure' as you have traveled the globe seeking, action and romance. Finding both in abundance, there isn't a secret tomb or ancient secret that you haven't unlocked. Vital Gear Includes a map of exotic locals, trusted guide and reservations at the closest Four Seasons. Action and romance .... yeah right!

The word "Style" is misleading.

At the risk of sounding corny: What's in a name? A rose would smell as sweet by any other name... -

If you get arrested or charged, get a lawyer IMMEDIATELY, and refuse to talk to the cops until the lawyer arrives. That's the only advice I can give ya...may justice be served.

This is kinda gross. Sensitive stomachs beware

Warts are caused by a virus, so yeah they're contagious. Also, a wart is NOT the result of it "getting better". A wart is EXACTLY what the virus wants to happen...kind of like a little home where the virus can grow and spread. You should definitely have them removed. I'm surprised you can live with them...isn't it painful? I had a wart on the ball of my foot for about a year and a half...I didn't know it was a wart until I couldn't stand the pain any longer and went to a doctor. Warts will go away on their own, eventually....but it can take years. It's much better to have them taken care of by a doctor. My doctor used liquid nitrogen to freeze it off. It took several treatments and stung a lot because my wart was so deep (it was a planter's wart so it grew inward, not outward). The sooner you get it taken care of, the better! -
Ways to use a PDA to enhance training
monkeygirl replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sai I'm gonna move this to General MA since I feel that the whole community could benefit from this really nifty idea! -
I suppose that videos are better than nothing at all. I've learned some interesting techniques from videos, so I know they can be useful as supplemental training. However, I don't have any experience in basing my training solely off of videos. I would tend to think it would be more expensive than training, but I don't know.

It portrays a "bad boy" background and a certain aura of toughness. Recovering from being shot 9 times (whether they were all at once or not) is pretty impressive! Not that I condone it....I hate rap music on a whole. But that's just me.

close or actual encounters

Somewhere near the end of March, my older brother and I went to the mall to buy a birthday present for our mother. It was a weekday afternoon, so the mall was practically empty. Near the mall entrance, we notice a lone man, smoking a cigarette and leaning against the wall. I thought nothing of it until we walked by him...the man quickly put out his half-finished cigarette, and followed us into the mall, change jingling in his pockets. I looked back at the man and he stared right into my eyes. I clutched my purse tightly and walked a little closer to my brother. We walked a little quicker, and I could hear the man's change jingling faster as he tried to keep up with us. I turned around quickly to look at him again, and he was staring...again. Obviously, this all gave me a very BAD feeling. So, I clenched my fist and gave him a rather evil scowl. I turned back around, and walked forward...the man took the next opportunity to suddenly stop following us and take a different path. It's possible that I was just being paranoid, and the man wasn't following us, his intention had always been to take that left turn. Or maybe he was going the same direction as we were, and my scowl just scared him off However, I still think it's a good possiblity that he intended to mug us, all things considered. Either way, I didn't care to find out. -
Here's my summer routine: Wake up (Usually around 8 am, although lately it's been closer to 11) Walk two feet from my bed to my computer and check e-mail, KF, etc. Get breakfast and return to the computer Shower at around 11 am Start a load of laundry Clean my room Get lunch Go driving with Mom (w00 I love driving ) Play guitar/video games/do chores Basically waste time until dinnertime and then bedtime. If I'm lucky on a weekend, I might get to see my old dojo buds

I find it interesting to note that the US military has allegedly been using Metallica music as an aid in the interrogation process. So it could very well be that they have been playing "Enter Sandman"! Personally, I would have considered that my contribution tothe war effort, but is that how Metallica views it? Noooooo..... Of course, Metallica freaked out and said "those people never did anything to us!" Next thing you know, Metallica will be upset that people don't spend enough time listening to their albums after they buy them! Don't get me wrong, I love Metallica, but they can be funny sometimes

Two-week-long self-defense classes for women only are one thing...usually they're beating up on a Redman suit or something like that. It promotes the whole "girl power" kind of feeling, and is pretty empowering. I also know of cases where men being in the classes can be pretty creepy. It's one thing to have another woman on top of you in a simulation of a rape attack, and quite another to have a man. Women need to feel secure, relaxed and confident during these classes, and they will learn better. The situations can be recreated quite accurately enough with bodysuits and drills. HOWEVER, when it comes to MARTIAL ARTS training on a long-term basis, classes should be integrated. For one thing, men tend to fight differently (note: not necessarily BETTER, just DIFFERENT) from women. Untrained men will naturally have more power than untrained women. As far as sparring goes, it just makes sense to have women fighting men. On a more personal level, I've always had more guy friends than girl friends, so I would DIE in an all-girl class! From the guys' perspective, fighting women still makes sense. If a skilled male fighter "goes easy" on a skilled female fighter, the man will get his clock cleaned right away! It's very much a respect thing, and a lesson in humility. Because women are generally of smaller build and frame, they tend to be faster and more flexible, which can provide a unique challenge to men. In my opinion, integrated classes just make sense.

I just saw Minority Report tonight (rented it)....holy crap that's a good movie! I was a little wary because I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan, but .... wow! I loved that movie.....I wanna watch it a few more times before I return it! Also watched Sweet Home Alabama....OK chick flick, I guess. I've seen better.

Beating the Instructor
monkeygirl replied to Black Dragon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Instructors often like to do a little "mental testing". I'm not saying that this is definitely the case, but just keep it in mind: Your instructor may be "letting" you get the better of him in sparring, to see whether you will still respect him afterwards, or if you will run off to another school. Obviously, your instructor is the one who brought your training this far. If you can "beat" your instructor in sparring, it's because HE trained you to do so. It takes a very humble, very big person to train someone to be better than them. After all, many instructors have a competitive nature, too. If this is the case, your instructor deserves an enormous amount of respect from you. And, just because you may be able to "beat" him in sparring, doesn't mean he has nothing left to teach you. There's always somebody bigger and better than you. Your instructor has probably been teaching long enough to be able to keep refining your skills, even when your skills have surpassed his own. That's the difference between being a skilled student, and being a skilled instructor. ALWAYS remember that, and stay humble -
does confidence kill???
monkeygirl replied to tenguartist's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Initial confidence is very common. Generally speaking, there's nothing really wrong with a little confidence. It helps fuel us forward, helps us to learn more...at times our confidence can be well-placed and accurate. Overconfidence can be dangerous, however. Like everyone else has said, it will just take some good ol' fashioned humbling to straighten him out. The sooner, the better, though. The last place his humbling should occur is on the street, facing an armed attacker. -
I remember wondering that when I was 5...my parents wouldn't answer me when I asked them, so I ended up imagining these blind people driving around all the time. So then when some driver pulls a boneheaded move, and my parents are like: "What is he, BLIND???" I'd just say "Probably, Daddy."

HTML is a very simple and quick programming language to learn, and it will definitely pay off. Pages load faster because the script is clean (unlike most programs which add in tons of unnecessary script), and you have much better control over the look and feel of the page. My brother learned HTML from http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/basics.html, and then he taught it to me.
