Why you should train even when you don't feel like it
monkeygirl replied to cross's topic in Health and Fitness
Remember though, there is something to be said for not training when you're sick or exhausted, especially when it comes to heavy exercise. If you lift weights when you're not feeling physically well, you could end up injuring yourself, which just isn't worth it. However, if you're just being lazy and not feeling like going, that's a different story I'm going to move this to Health, Training & Fitness. -

Bruce Lee's "squeaky chicken sounds" were his kiai Someone else could tell you in better detail what a kiai is, but until then I'll give you the basic run-down. A kiai is a loud yell used for several purposes: 1. Scare your attacker 2. Empower yourself/give yourself confidence 3. Tighten stomach muscles and add power to your techniques. Different people have different yells; a kiai is a very personal extension of yourself...it takes some experimenting to find what works best for you, and what you're comfortable with. I'm not sure, but I think Bruce Lee exaggerated his kiai a bit for theatrical purposes. But I could be mistaken -
I hear that in Pennsylvania, they're trying to either get rid of the bowhunting season, or make it shorter. Something about rifle hunting being more popular, so they want to extend its season...I'm not a hunter so I don't really know. In my area however, deer hunting is like a service to humanity...the deer are vastly overpopulated and running amuck. A few years ago, I remember there being a big problem of deer hopping out into traffic, causing a lot of wrecks. So, as long as you don't get drunk and shoot my house, I'm fine with hunting

Yeah, I think T.A.T.U. has a pretty cool sound, and I like their two singles. But I do remember vaguely wondering one day "why are two girls saying 'all the things SHE said'? Ah, maybe they're just talking about their moms or something." So then I'm flipping through channels, land on MTV2 (the only channel of MTV that actually SHOWS music videos anymore, even if most of them are pretty crappy), and look at that! It's TATU! "Hey mom, check this out, isn't this a cool song? Hey, who's she kissing?" .... ... ............. :o "Um, methinks I'll change the channel now."

I know exactly what you mean...I'm stuck finishing my Algebra 2 and Biology Lab courses over the summer. It's a long story, but you don't have anything better to do ( ) so just read: OK, first it's important for you to know that I'm in a cyber charter school: this is basically like being homeschooled, except that I do my work on a computer and I have non-parental advisors. A few weeks into the first semester, my advisor calls me up to tell me about this six-week-long drawing course for 11th graders. For a second I thought she had forgotten that I was in 10th grade...then she said the course was being offered to me because they had some slots left, and I was such a good student. I figured it couldn't hurt to take the course, so I signed up. And that's where it all went wrong. You see, this wasn't just an hour-long, twice-a-week course. Oh, no. This was six weeks of intense reading and drawing assignments, with assignments due every day; assignments which you had to spend at least three hours doing. Then I'd have to go to drawing websites, participate in the message board every day, the list goes on. Needless to say, my other courses were put on hold for six weeks. In hindsight, it's a good thing that I'm in this sort of schooling environment, or I would have had to juggle my other subjects on top of the drawing course. So basically, I'm six weeks behind in school. I've managed to finish all of my courses so far, except Algebra 2 and Biology Lab. In fact, I should probably be doing the work right now, but it's the end of July and I have very little work ethic left in me. Oh woe is me.... -
Hmmm... Fenris-Wolf: In some other forums, perhaps they call that "atmosphere-building", but here we just call it spam... Kidding of course... For the most part, anyway!

Ahhh like the movie ok. I was thinking of Groundhog Day as in February 2nd where Puxatawny (sp?) Phil comes out and looks at his shadow....what's so special about that? Ummmm I guess in the near future...I'd want my groundhog day to be when I go for my driver's license And then somebody will say "Wow, you got it on your first try!" And I'd be thinking to myself "If only they knew..."

Sparring Question
monkeygirl replied to Asahi1265's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think that sparring children can help you exercise control in sparring. I can't stand a martial artist who will only spar with "the big boys" so that they can go full contact. Control is extremely important, so I think a learning environment with a balanced amount of children and adults could be helpful to building control. However, if the training takes on too much of a "kiddy" aspect, with constant games and watered-down training, then that's unacceptable. Kids can usually handle an adult environment, but most adults won't stand for a kiddy environment. If your dojo is suffering the latter, you should seek out a new one. -

I'm not so sure about three spinning crescent kicks, but I do know of a martial artist David "Double D" Dougles. I SWEAR he does a 900 degree turn without even getting a running start first. Here's the kick he does: 540 (like a step-around back hook/wheel kick) add back leg roundhouse add back hook/wheel kick. I've watched him do this on videotape but I still have no idea how he manages to do it without wires. It's a 900 degree turn from start to finish, although he only does about 720 of it in the air. Still, that's pretty amazing...a 720 is a relatively difficult skateboarding technique...and they have speed and ramps and such to help them! This guy just does it from practically a standstill.

Let's try to keep unfair generalizations out of this, okay? There are plenty of male blackbelts who refuse to go easy on a lower rank, and plenty of female blackbelts who will happily oblige.

My general sparring strategy is to hang back a little bit, observe my opponent, all the while remaining defensive and countering their attacks with a sidekick or two. If the person is such an agressive fighter that I can't hang back and "figure them out", I'll go on the offense: get up on my toes, stay light on my feet, dance around any of their attacks, and pound into them with jabs, backfists, uppercuts and the occasional kick. Normally I would kick much more often, but usually when I go on the defense, my partner will retreat backwards fairly quickly, and it's easier to run and punch than it is to run and kick. M'kay I have no idea how much sense that makes for the rest of you, but that's how I like to fight

Things NOT to say to your instructor...
monkeygirl replied to Valithor's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Ah, Valithor has reminded me of another: "You mean to tell me that, YOU, little girl, could pull off a technique like that on ME?" (Big 300 lb + student to me, while I was assisting with a self-defense class) I'm happy to say that the student was convinced of the effectiveness of the technique in a matter of seconds -

Well, they never said what the sticks were, I just thought they looked like escrima sticks. Whether that's what they were or not, I can't be sure.
