  1. I don't think it has much to do with chinese martial arts, but I do believe some influcence rubbed off when chinese and japanese traders met.
  2. Definitely sounds like aikido.
  3. I like to be agressive against defenseive fighters and defensive against agressive fighters. I will look for mistakes, and when I see 'em, I try and exploit them.
  4. I kind of bounce as high as Muhammed Ali, but a ltitle quicker, now in a real life street situation I wouldn't bounce as much as I do in class and sparring, but I WOULD be light on my feet, I would bounce a bit in a fight but not much, more than likely anyways I would go into some jujtisu techniques and not be bouncing at all but try and finish it ont he ground quick and fast...buttt if there were mroe than 1 guy heck I'm not staying flat-footed, I"m bouncing around and using each of them to my own advantage(Although I hope I never get into that situation..*knock on wood*).
  5. Not at all, many men use them, some instructors at camp that taught the fan were men.
  6. Well like I said it allows me to move faster than rooting myself, so I guess it's pretty much personal preference. But skeptic, I also practice traditional Okinawan karate, some people don't bounce, some people do..but as up to yet I haven't had a problem with it...also using unnecessary energy, I don't bounce when I don't need to, but if I see somebody about to attack, I get hoppy...people always say that they have a hard time hitting me and they call me jackrabbit...but it's just my style..it won't work for everybody, and I never meant to say it would (sorry if it came across from me that way) I just meant that it's what helps me move, and by staying grounded for whatever reason I feel flatfooted and unspeedylike..haha (is that even a word?) ...anyways, I enjoy this post..lol.
  7. Capoeria is a good art but that and aikido I don't know how good that will look together..it's all flips and stuff but the styles aren't really something you can make a natural style. What about aikido and something like muay thia? If not mauy thai what about boxing, kickboxing, or something striking wise..you know liek a satnd up art...if ya want showiness, then what about aikido and sword fighting? Or Phillipino stick fighting? Or if you're not into the weapons but into really fancy stuff what about aikido and drunken kung fu?
  8. Oh, that was probably just a kata. Aikido itself is in no way shape or form staged...you can really do that on a street...but it takes years and years of training to get as good as that. A great website that teaches you everything you need to know about Aikido is aikiweb.com.
  9. Well I pick stuff I like, but it doesn't hurt to get somethin' your girlfriend likes does it?
  10. Hold out your hand like a straight punch...now turn it just a little bit to your right, liek you're turning a door-knob. Stop at about3/4...that's a 3/4 punch.
  11. Skeptic...I agree with what ya said, except a few points I might throw in there. Being bouncy allows you to move from side to side if needed, not just up and down, I can move all 8 corners, west, east, north, south, nw, ne, sw, and se in a matter of a split second...but if I were to stand still, sure I could do the same thing but not as fast. As for the energy it should be used wisely. I know this does use up much energy, however it's all got to do with your aerobic level. If you're not in very good aerobic shape, sure it's gonna wear you out in a matter of a minute, but after doing it for so long you don't feel it a bit. But, you SHOULD use it wisely. When I'm nobody's advancing or attacking I'll still myself and plant my feet on the ground, but if you come at me boy I'm on my toes. It's like a bullfighter, you come at me and I'll be moving side to side and ya might walk right past me... As for sweeping, sure you could sweep me when I come down but more than likely I'll either 1. jump over your foot, or two just jump back. Dodging techniques is easier than people think, as is fighting. Fighting is the easiest game in the world...all you have to do to get away from a technique is move back ro side to side, but people don't realize that. But it's right there. I'm a big sweeper myself, and I love sweeping techniques, so I guess that's also to an advantage because I know what to look for, but you've got a great point, not everybody can see a full fledges sweep coming and might get swept on your feet. If people base out, that's a great time to sweep for me, I would rather sweep somebody based than somebody bouncing. if you're based I know your balance is the direction your face is pointing, and if I break that, by even making a slight movement to the side, I'm making sure you're going down, as for bouncy fighters, I don't know what to expect from them. So I hate sweeping bouncy fighters, not saying it can't be done, quite the contrary..but for me it's way harder. You can also sweep if somebody throws a kick, as soon as you see that leg come down take it from under them. As for rhythm, when I bounce, I don't just keep my hands up and bounce up and down, I move all around you, side to side, forward, backwards, I like to confuse my opponents...When I move around liek that if you come in for a punch I'm bouncing to your side and attacking. I also throw my hands out and move 'em around a bit (sort of swaying) and I move around, I stomp and throw feints, and I look for mistakes, and when I see one I exploit it. You made some great points on bouncing, but I think it all comes down to the fighter whether or not they feel like being a bouncy fighter. But for me it fits and it helps me with my speed...guess it's all personal preference. Thanks for the great post.
  12. I would say sai, because they are traditional and a great weapon to learn. Judges love them, and the history behind them is great too. But fans are also cool..but I would say go with the sais.
  13. I've broken toes numerous times when it's been cold outside, and our mat is a bit cold, and ya can't feel your toes, and take note that i'm a bouncy fighter. Well, being a bouncy fighter has tons of advantages, but not when you can't feel your toes and you turn around and your toes catch the mat..now everytime I walk my toes go "crack" "crack" "crack".
  14. A good thing is to be on your toes, and bouncy...have your legs chambered already, and by that i just mean stay on yoru tiptoes and bounce around while fighting.
  15. I would use kickboxing for the strong kicks/punches, muay thai for the use of elbows and knees, drunken kung fu to throw some flexibility, deceit, and balance (or in this case-off balance) in there, karate for a solid base and good power, Krav Maga for the weapon skills and down ot earth brutality if it comes down to it, aikido for hte locks, judo for the throws, and some form of jujitsu/wrestling for the grappling.
  16. I believe the most practiced is TKD, but the most known-about is either shotokan karate or kung-fu.
  17. We use 3/4 punch so that the wrist bone won't break and is straight on impact.
  18. Some of the good points are the atmosphere, the people, and the sensei. The bad points? I haven't quite found any yet.
  19. What about kickboxing for the punching and kicking aspect, and judo for throwing/locking? Or another combo could be Aikido for the throwing/locking and good 'ole fashioned karate for the standup game.
  20. hmm...he does sound like a good build for judo..do ya know what he's lookin' for? Self-defense? Fun? Interest? Comp? Etc...try and find that out then let us know and we might be able to give ya a better perspective..
  21. I agree with pineapple 100%..you can never be to old to start the martial arts...heck I know some people who are 60 somethin' still kickin'. Just tell them how serious you are, and get info ready beforehand and show them that you are serious..what styles are available? What quite are you looking for in the martial arts? Self defense? Fun? Tournaments? To get in shape? Get all this together, find something you like, get info, and then show them you're serious..
  22. Hey I just thoguht I might add my two cents on your question there...It's a good idea to follow by example and watch and learn, because that's what higher belt ranks are for..to set an example. Use them as a guide, but don't completely focus on them, you know what I mean? Follow by example, but do it at your own rate and you should do great.
  23. Same goes for me, my religion says no, so I won't ever get one, and same with peircings (except for girls...that's personal, I think jewelry like that is for girls, no offense to any guys who have 'em though)...but I do love looking at tattoos.
  24. Well, they don't mind if ya throw the jokers.
  25. If yo'ure planning on using these as self-defense weapons..umm..then no offense but you'll probably get killed. If you're looking into them as just somethin' fun to do for a fun lil' hobby? No advice..sorry, google it.
