  1. She is pregnant and should be removed when she is nice and plump! If you are unsure when looking at her, she ain't ready!
  2. Everyone that I teach wears a headgear during sparring but this is more for liability reasons. I also attended a school where no one wore headgear and never saw anyone suffer injuries because of it. Most injuries that I see are facial injuries and the common headgear does not protect this area. Everyone wore a headgear when I trained in boxing but the punches were far less controlled than in most martial arts classses. I guess that the bottom line is "better safe than sorry"!
  3. I got knocked out twice on the streets (once by a guy who was talking nice to me and suddenly punched me and once by a guy who hit me from behind)........didn't feel a thing.......like turning off a light switch.
  4. Different promoters and different styles vary in how many rounds or how points are scored. Most point tournaments that I have been to were 1 round per opponent., however I have seen tournaments that were 2 or 3 rounds per opponent. Many tournaments that I've been to gave 1 point for every good strike and 2 points for a kick to the head. Some gave points for takedowns. Some gave points for a superior positiion on the ground. Many do not allow takedowns. Most declared the first person to acquire 3 points the winner while others used timed matches and the winner was whoever had the most points. I suggest that you find out what specific tournament he is interested in and contact the promoter or you can tell the forum which tournament you have questions about and someone here can give you a specific answer.
  5. I am a Correctional Officer for the state of Hawaii.
  6. Relax, people are there to help you. You don't have to know anything before going as they will take you step by step. You'll probably be taught the basic punch and blocks......and formalities.
  7. Hi BlackBeltHorseRider! I don't ride a horse, play volleyball, or play chess but I do practice KARATE!
  8. Hi kungfukid! Welcome to the martial arts world!
  9. I'm always an advocate of cross training but I also always advocate picking one art as your base and make a lifetime commitment to it.
  10. Traditional Kenpo was just one art taught to Adriano Emperado who was just one of five masters of five different styles who created Kajukenbo. Most modern Kenpo have Kajukenbo influence in their lineage and therefore incorporates many more techniques than traditional kenpo. Many Kajukenbo practitioners broke off from Kajukenbo to create their own organizations and named their style either Kenpo or Kempo. I believe that most schools that use the name, Kempo, came through the late Professor Walter Godin who was at one time, the personal bodyguard of Emperado. Adriano Emperado was ahead of his time because he encouraged his students to learn other styles and to incorporate their techniques. This was still in the days when crosstraining was discouraged in other schools. This is why there are so many variations of Kajukenbo and Kenpo. There are numbered techniques for both punching defense and grabbing defense. Kajukenbo have a unique set of katas because they were created by Emperado and now include katas created by his students.
  11. Get some grappling gloves and practice with light strikes
  12. My best achievement was training in a BJJ class while in my forties when the next oldest student was in his late twenties. The workouts were very hard and they laughed when I came but I did everything that they did and they stopped laughing. My greatest achievement has yet to come........
  13. A documentary rather than a movie, "Fighting Black Kings" is a must see for anyone interested in karate. It is about the first international karate tournament held in Japan and focuses on the American fighters. It is a "MUST SEE"!
  14. Jackie Chan looked like a true martial artist to me, however Bruce Lee concentrated on practical applications so my vote goes to Bruce Lee.
  15. I loved the original (#1)....great story........just wish that the "kid" had better skills because it was too obvious that his opponents would whip his behind in a real tournament.
  16. You answered my question
  17. I believe that the most practiced style of what you listed is Tae kwon do.
  18. 1kickKO, You're right about one thing........it's pointless!
  19. Shorin Ryu, Honolulu is where I live. I do know who Pat Nakata is and visited his school a long time ago. I will send you a private message.
  20. I tried to locate a Goju Ryu school here in Hawaii but could not find any in the telephone directory nor could I find any on the internet. I wouldn't mind trying this style if if was available and fit my schedule.
  21. I always tell my students to train at home on their off days. It doesn't have to be a lot. Even 15 minutes a day (off days) of practicing one technique will greatly improve your skills over just classroom training.
  22. Learn to grapple a striker Learn to strike a grappler Train harder than the person who does both!
  23. What would be your favorite takedown for a street situation?
  24. I was trained in boxing to catch the jab with my right but I wouldn't want to try it without gloves on. STR33TGUY, Is that you in the photos?
