Hi Rick! and welcome! -
Hi Marshall! and welcome!

I've known many overweight Senseis who were outstanding instructors. I know that since I started teaching, I've had far less time to train like I used to. Remember that many of these older overweight Senseis were in fantastic condition in their prime and what is important is how much knowledge that they have to pass on to you. Don't judge a book by it's cover. I know of one high ranking and very overweight instructor who was provoked into a fight by a much younger, extremely muscular, small waisted criminal who said that no way that the "fat" guy could take him on. Well....to make the story short...the man with the small waist was proved wrong. As far as overweight people who want to train in martial arts. I accept anyone who has a real desire to learn. I once trained a guy who was so overweight that no belt could fit him but he could do the splits and never gave up no matter how hard the training got.

I was the kid that everyone picked on in elementary school and middle school. I was beaten up, mobbed, and robbed many times during this period. I began my training in high school. I still got into numerous fights but this is because I attended a school that had a reputation for being rowdy. It was situated in the middle of housing for low income families and almost everyone got into a fight now and then. Watching all the fights in school made me realize that fighting was not a game or in other words, there are no rules in street fighting.

Thanks everyone! I was really surprised to find out that I was picked as the member of the month. I've checked out other forums but could not find any that came close to being as good as this one. Thanks again! With respect to all of you! Pineapple -

A black belt is a person who had the discipline to not give up! -
Everyone trains in martial arts for different reasons and must train in the style that is suitable for them. I started training in martial arts because I was picked on a lot when I was young. I wanted to learn how to fight. I am still interested in learning practical techniques. (techniques that work well in real fights). I do not want to fight anybody and I avoid areas of a high potential for trouble, however I want to be prepared if trouble comes my way. I believe that the majority of people who train in martial arts are interested in practical techniques or in other words, they want to learn how to fight. Training in a fighting style does not mean that you don't learn character development. I always stress discipline and respect!.....and avoiding fights! I always tell my students that fighting is stupid because you must lose and get hurt, you might get killed, you might end up in jail, or you might get sued so it isn't worth it. Although I try to teach my students how to fight, I tell them this... If you train all your life just to fight and never get into a fight, all of your training was for nothing but if you train to fight yourself (discipline), you will use it everyday of your life.

Thanks ShotokanKid! I love it! Another mixed martial art style!

Most Hawaiian Kempo came from Professor Walter Godin who was a student and personal bodyguard of Professor Adriano Emperado, one of the founders of Kajukenbo. If you are training in a Kempo style that originated in Hawaii, you are training in an offshoot of Kajukenbo. Most American Kenpo schools can also be trace back to ties in Kajukenbo.

Hi greenbelt_girl15! What is Cuong Nhu?
-
One of the founders, Adriano Emperado, was awarded the title of Professor and rank of 10th degree by the Chinese Physical Cultural Society of Hawaii so the highest ranking achieved by practitioners is 9th degree. All of the acknowledged 9th degrees were certified by the founder himself.

We are taught that your belt represents your knowledge so washing your belt means that you're washing away your knowledge. We don't believe that this actually happens but we don't wash our belts out of respect for our system's tradition.

The JKD class that I attended is owned by Burton Richardson. It was a very good class but as I said earlier, I was looking for something different from what I had already trained in. I am more interested in the classical stuff like trapping hands.

I just came home from my trial class of JKD. We did 2 things, boxing and BJJ.

Various arts teach striking an opponent with both hands simultaneously. I am wondering if anyone in the forum has actually used such techniques? I am not talking about blocking and striking together but striking the body and/or head simultaneously with the left and right hand.

Can ANYBODY earn a black belt?
pineapple replied to krunchyfrogg's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Question: Does this mean that some people can never be a black belt? Not everyone has what it takes to be a good fighter!......in my opinion anyway -
