Plan to study for a lifetime and you will reach all of your goals! Don't pick an art based upon when you can get a black belt. Pick an art that you truely WANT to learn. If you like what you're training in, then the time factor will be meaningless. Time will go by quickly if you ENJOY what you're learning.

I was taught chi healing by a master who traveled to 3 countries (Japan, China, and Korea) to learn about chi. When I pass my hand over people, more than half of them say that they feel something, even a little girl told her parents that she felt heat traveling through her body when I did it, and more than half say that they feel so much better after, even experiencing loss of pain. Is this really chi or is it just in their minds?

I Feel Lile Im Not Improving!
pineapple replied to Ben Martin's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that everone goes through the ups and downs of training. The thing to remember is that if you're on the down side, the up side is just around the corner if you hang in there. I never worry about who is better than me as long as I'm better today than I was yesterday. -

What are the laws on using karate in self defense?

You will not be charged as someone that is armed but your knowledge of martial arts will most certainly used against you by the prosecuter on the grounds that you knowingly did more harm than necessary to your opponent. -

Popularity among youth students
pineapple replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I teach a small class. Most of my students were my friends prior to joining my class. It can present some problems of some horseplay during class but not to the point of disrespect. Many people that I teach in my instructor's class become my friends and I welcome their friendship. Making friends in training is one thing that I love about teaching martial arts. Sorry, but it looks like I'm going in the opposite direction of the majority on this subject but I do understand your point of view and why you say what you do.......I just love making new friends! ........and they are respectful to me! -
Where is your Martial Arts "Home"??
pineapple replied to username9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The majority of the stuff that I train in come from Japan..karate, judo, Japanese jujitsu.... however I like to think that my "home" is the world because I am open to any style including American boxing and Brazilian Jujitsu. -

TKD and Shotokan
pineapple replied to Kensai's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I trained in Taekwondo in the seventies and Shotokan in the eighties and there were a lot of differences but also a lot of similarities. I encountered no difficulties in transition from one to the next. Basics were almost the same. The biggest difference was the emphasis: Taekwondo emphasized kicking and spent a lot more time stretching. Shotokan emphasized hand techniques. The other difference was Shotokan's katas were more complex while I was taught much simpler katas in Taekwondo. These were just my experiences in the schools that I attended...yours might be different. -
If you can't talk your way out of a fight, walk away from a fight....If he follows you and a physical confrontation is inevitable, it's time to do what you have to do. Train for the ability to fight and the mentality of not getting into fights.
-
If you love your teacher, stick with him because you are training to please yourself, not to please others. Remember that no matter where you train or who you train with, there's going to be somebody who is going to criticize what you're doing. I ignore people who talk bad about what I do because I selected what I wanted to do and it doesn't matter if others don't like it.

Boxing VS. Judo
pineapple replied to ravenzoom's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
My opinion would be that the judo guy would win if the boxer didn't knock him out with the first couple of punches. Once the gap is closed, the boxer would be lost in the hands of a judo person. This is of course assuming that the boxer had no training in anything else. -
How do you learn to listen to your body?
pineapple replied to jarrettmeyer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Thinking is necessary when learning new techniques. It is through continual repetition that you can execute techniques without thinking about it. Stop worrying about where you are today and feel confident that you will be better tomorrow. -
I know of one case here where 1 person died after getting kicked in a tournament but never heard of anyone who died in class sparring...but it is always a possibility.

I stretched for years and was never able to do a full split. I just got some help from Draven Chen Zhen and these methods are really helping me. -
BJJ useful?
pineapple replied to Maddwraph's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
In my opinion, BJJ is the best art that there is once you hit the ground. Many people say that they don't want to fight on the ground.....Well sometimes you have no choice....and for those that say that no one can take them down to the ground, I say that it's easier said than done. I have trained in BJJ and yes, I can prevent the less experience practitioners from taking me down but I found it almost impossible to not be taken down by the veterans. Yes, they did teach a lot of sport techniques but they also taught a lot of techniques which would be useful in a real fight. BJJ was lacking in strikes and limited in throws but it is an important part of an overall strategy to fighting. -
What are the laws on using karate in self defense?
pineapple replied to Kamisama's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I tell practitioners that they have the right to protect themselves, however they must cease as soon as there is no longer any threat to them. The amount of force used cannot be excessive. The court's point of view will be if you were just defending yourself or was your main goal to really hurt this guy? I am not a lawyer but this is what I was taught as a Correctional Officer. -
Visualizing what you want to be will always help you. Your mind has a great effect on your body so if you believe that chi will help you, it will. A lot of people say that this is not chi but just positive thinking. I say, what's the difference as long as you get good results.

I teach my students this about chi. Energy is all around us because energy never disappears. It only changes from one form to another. When we do chi breathing or deep breathing, we are taking in energy that is provided by God (Christian). Chi breathing or deep breathing fills our body with more oxygen than it is used to having and having more oxygen circulating through our body enables that person to function at a level that it never did before. The human body does emit energy (heat), therefore we are all taking in energy and emitting energy.
