  1. Congradulations! Unfortunately, in my first tournament, I got defeated without my opponents even trying hard.
  2. I train in Kajukenbo! One of the founders of the system, Sijo Adriano Emperado, told his students that if they see something that they like in another system, to add it to their style!..........I follow his advice!
  3. TJS, What kind of guard sweep would you use?
  4. Traditional Kenpo and traditional karate are extremely different from Kajukenbo. Many modern style Kenpo trace their roots back to Kajukenbo and therefore have many similarities. The BO in KajukenBO stood for Chinese BOxing (Kung Fu) Kajukenbo was based on street fighting (and was tested on the street), not tournament fighting and incorporates eye gouges, throat strikes, groin shots, elbow breaks, knee breaks, etc. Kajukenbo was not my only art. In my lifetime, I have trained in over 10 different schools and yet Kajukenbo is what really grabbed me as the art that I wanted to do. I plan to continue training in Kajukenbo untill the day that I am no longer able to do so.
  5. I teach because training in the martial arts has helped me to overcome so many difficulties in my life and I what others to experience how martial arts can help them in facing hardships in their life.
  6. You answered your own question. For what you desire, training in karate while crosstraining in boxing and BJJ sounds like the perfect solution. Yes, I have witnessed numerous joint injuries (some permanent) in BJJ and facial injuries in boxing while I have seen very few serious injuries in karate. I am a strong advocate of cross training. Remember that you are open to injuries in any type of martial arts. I acquired a damaged eye (torn with floaters) in a Kempo tournament.
  7. Everyone out there, send me a million dollars and I'll make you a blackbelt in 1 day and I'll even refund your money if you're not satisfied................................................. ..................if you can find me afterwards.
  8. Hi wtKempo student I met Sijo Emperado numerous times and was once asked to perform for him. Can you tell me more of your instructor's background in Kajukenbo?
  9. I've never trained in Goju Ryu or Kyokushinkai so I was not aware that they had so many grappling techniques. I am aware of Chin Na but did not know that it was part of Goju Ryu. I'm learning something new all the time. Thanks for your replies. What is gyakute?
  10. I have used a simple front kick to the stomach successfully against non martial artists. It curls them over, then the hands come into play. Basics always seem to work best in real street fights.
  11. Hi Joanne!
  12. TJS, What type of mount escape would you use on the street???
  13. Hi KiiiOUCH! and welcome!
  14. Maybe later, money's getting a little tight! Thanks again.
  15. Shorin Ryuu, I ordered a video about Bubishi from George Alexander. Thanks for the info!!
  16. Ordered Marc's book on surviving a knife fight and Pentecost's book. Thanks I know that knife fights are risky businness, that is why I want to learn more about it. I was stabbed by a knife once but I immediately hit him hard enough that he could not continue his attack.
  17. Shorin Ryuu: I would like to learn more about this. Know of any good instructional material? Books, tapes, dvds??
  18. Only if it's ice cold!
  19. Great reply, Edgard! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
  20. Has anyone learned grappling in a traditional karate school? If so, what techniques were taught?
  21. Shorin Ryuu, Thanks for the clarification. I'm interested in knowing what grappling techniques that you learned in karate but that's a different topic so I'm going to start a new topic in the KARATE section. Please look for it so you can give me your reply. Thanks!
  22. Shorin Ryuu, With respect, I believe that you're getting off the subject. You're getting into the style vs style controversy. The question was "Was Bill Wallace as good as the legend?" Bill Wallace was a legend as a kickboxer so the question can be reread as "Was Bill Wallace as good a kickboxer as his legend?" and I again answer, "Yes"
  23. Any surprises won't be anything that you weren't taught so don't worry about it, just think about all of your training and you'll do just fine!
  24. DIET The worst thing to do try when attempting to lose weight is to starve yourself. When your body lacks food, your metabolism slows down so when you begin to eat normally, your weight gains will be more than before. Diet means watch what you eat! A diet that I have been ridiculed for but worked well for me was simply avoiding beef and pork and sodas. SPARRING Your thoughts of not wanting to hurt anyone in sparring is good because sparring is sparring, it is not fighting. The more that you train, the more control that you will have so you'll be able to spar more freely without hurting anyone. When I spar with people, I adjust myself to how they are sparring, if they hit lightly then I hit lightly, If they hit hard then I hit hard.
