  1. im sure theres a mma school around somewhere near you, theyre popping up everywhere these days.
  2. depends on what happens and what you can get to first. if you wind up on the ground, at least with me, armbars are the most likely. standing ill go for a choke (or throw.) but you never know what happens until it happens. a lot of the time ankle locks and wrist locks just present themselves to you.
  3. dogs arent like people at all- they attack with only their mouths, and thats also where theyre most vulnerable. its very easy to outmanuever almost any dog, because we move side to side much more than they do. kick it in the snout as much as you have to- its a lot like our own noses. ribs can make a good target, but just little kicks like you were kickign a guys shin is all you oughta dog. if you can hit one right over the bridge of its nose you can make one pass out. still though, best to just get the hell away. dont want to enrage it even more.
  4. holy crap... complicated indeed...
  5. tiger balm! also, condition your shins more, kicking bags with them, etc. also, a rolling pin up and down it (people think its to harden your shin, and that its harmful later in life- both myths) will help to flatten the bone and prevent injuries like breaks if you ever clash shins with someone or something.
  6. nah thats way too much movement for a jab. a guy who does that is prime to be hooked when i feign a jab. a lot of guys i know stuff it really well, though that can lead to trouble... i like to just slip it or block it with an elbow (hand on ear kind of thing if you know what im talking about.)
  7. ehhh, it can be done without too much difficulty. (hard work, on the other hand....) lift around 8-10 reps for the best MUSCLE SIZE GROWTH. (theres a post somewhere around here where master jules talks about the different reps and what the do- its really good.) run every day for fat loss. eat a well balanced diet. its not that hard, really... you just have to get in to it. you can also gain muscle without lifting heavy, or at all, by doing body weight exercises, low weight circuit training (not recommended if just starting out, but talk about fat los...) or something like that. to dispell some myths- you can gain muscle while losing weight because you lose weight as you run every day becasue your body burns up those fat reserves, but eat protein and lift and your body will grow its muscle because it suddenly needs more muscle mass than it has. for 95% of the population, thats as complicated as it gets.
  8. yea im glad you mentioned that lucky- a lot of people dont know that whey protein, for instance, is in and out of your bloodstream in about an hour- so a lot of it goes unused (though i imagine its good to take right before a workout.) the rule of thumb to always fall back on though- the natural food source of whatever youre trying to get almost always the best.
  9. anyone heard of this? links? info? etc....
  10. hey do you have a link to any site with that study? i want to see that....
  11. make it your goal to become so good that on the street the clinch only lasts a second at most, and youre then off to a takedown or whatever. (i mean for those clinches you dont like for stated reasons.)
  12. boxing is among the best martial arts period for self defense. learning to box without gloves is not hard at all.
  13. as boxers often say, speed is power.
  14. steamed veggies
  15. both are great- jumping rope burns a bit more calories than jogging though. sprinting, i dont know....
  16. yea- its supposed to hurt but not like that. bruises are one thing... that sounds much different.
  17. focus pad work where he swings at you
  18. moving back is good, kind of like vito said... the only time i dont is if im in trouble and i have to just cover up (crazy monkey fighting) in which case ill come in and clinch rather than take a huge punch as im going backwards. if im goin backwards i want to be slipping, blocking, and jabbing back at him.
  19. hm, i do bjj so i dont have that problem. but! i know the secret to memorization... for anything... flashcards! carry them in your pocket and do them at redlights or in line, or once a night or whatever. * works man.
  20. first off- study bjj if youre worried about that. first thing you do in a bad position is keep yourself from getting pummeled or submitted (broken). next is improve your position. for example, if youre mounted, try to roll him (if theyre not trained they wont even know to put you in their guard, maybe you can get to mount) or get him in your guard or just push the hell out and escape. after that, if hes in your guard you can maybe break an arm or sweep him and mount him, or if youre out you can stand back up, etc etc. if you dont know what im talking about, thats okay- just find a gracie bjj academy.
  21. you know, a lot of people say that karate has kicks and therefor has an edge with that. that can be true, but a lot of the time kicks get you into trouble. randy couture, top gun in ufc for those of you who dont know, doesnt throw kicks because he considers them to be just too dangerous. dont get me wrong, i love muay thai, the thai kick, and using it on people- but with a boxer's hands, just because theyre two weapons instead of however many, doesnt necessarily give him a disadvantage. id say sometimes, often in street fighting situations, it gives him an advantage.
  22. if hes grabbin your clothes you grab him too- behind neck, arm, whatever.... then you can maybe maneuver in for some knees or even a takedown- or you could even kick a shin/knee. once you move in though, id stay away from fancier judo moves, personally, and just pick a leg or ankle or whatever. then ground n pound, and probably armbar him right to the hospital.
  23. pfft, cheap move? the more unfair you call a move, the more attractive i find it.
  24. generally speaking, its just a matter of focuses- bjj on ground judo on clinch. of course nothings in stone.
