yea, wear thai pads if you need to. also, tigerbalm seems to help me when that happens. you might want to do the rolling pin thing- the object being to flatten your shinbone and thus prevent breaks and other injuries, toughen it up a little. also- when its better, hit the bag with it as much as possible to toughen it up too.

true- whenever i think of thai boxers i think of ones here in america, where they are influenced by western boxing. basically its boxing punch skills and everything else thai boxing. come to think of it, thats probably why americans can beat thai boxers so readily (at least thats how it seems to me. whenever i hear about it- like on that mtv true life thing with master toddys fighters.)

To strike or to grapple
VinnieDaChin replied to Vito's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
yea, in a bjj tournament. but if you train in bjj and you know how to get to a mount, its pretty easy to know how to punch a guy from there. so by training in grappling, you know how to get to a good ground position to strike. -
Grappling vs. Striking
VinnieDaChin replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
thing about grappling on the street is not that you necessarily want to do it, though sometimes if its one on one a quick take down and pound/break/choke might do- but sometimes if your just unlucky, you end up on the ground anyway. or if youre outnumbered- you dont want to get on the ground at all really, but if you do wind up there you want to get back up as quick as possible, in which case ground training certainly comes in handy. -
friend of mine is a cage fighter and has trained in thai boxing for many years now. he got sucker punched by a guy with two friends around... and he went to work on all three of them with his thai boxing skills, and he messed them up pretty good. (kicked a guy in the stomache and made him throw up too.)

the reason thai boxing is 'so great' is because of its effectiveness (duh.) this comes from several aspects of the style- the training and conditioning of the fighters is as hardcore as it gets (sometimes too hardcore in thailand and the people destroy their own bodies in a few years.) second its that its techniques, while maybe not entirely complete by some standards, are all effective and devistating. besides, its not that hard to modify what you know for muay thai sport fighting into a street fight, where you push kick a knee or groin instead of abdomen, punch a throat when applicable, etc. to sum up: thai boxers are generally the best strikers in the world.

i like it. to add to what he said- grappling, bjj in particular, has never claimed to help people with, say, multiple opponents. it only claimed to solve what they call the fundamental problem of martial arts- how a smaller physically inferior guy can beat a larger stronger more physically superior guy. also- people say that although fights end up on the ground, they start standing so thats more important. personally, im more concerned with how the fight ends (preferably with me winning) than with how it starts, though dont think im discounting striking and standing either. furthermore- even if youre against multiple opponents- suppose despite youre trying not to you end up on the ground. if that happened to me id want to be super good at grappling so that i can pull off a move- be it a sweep, escape, or break in five seconds so i can get back up. a guy whos never trained in ground fighting is much more likely to stay there and get punched, kicked, stomped, etc.

if youre fighting fighting, you can stomp and rake the shin and maybe headbut with the back of your head. if youre wrestling, well, things will be more difficult- talk to your coach, i dont even know how to describe it in words very well... but heres a try one you can step forward with one leg and pull him over your backthen take him to the ground. youve maybe given him your back, but the slam to the ground oughta hurt, and he should be to the side of you.

Edged weapon (eg knife) defences
VinnieDaChin replied to kickcatcher's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
personally id try to get in close and get control of that knife hand, but thats only if i cant take the option of giving him my money or running the hell away. no matter what though, youll probably get hurt. try this- get someone, even a kid, with a marker, and try to get it from them, and see how many marks you get on you while doing it. -
just for the record- i dont know of any state that doesnt permit fighting in the defense of someone else. anyway- if someone messes with a friend of mine (and theyre not armed or some * like that) im f#$kin them up.

although it isnt just like the street- the ufc is a good basic guide for what martial arts to do what (although everyone trains in the same things these days.) a street fight is different than a cage fight, but a cage fight does have enough elements, with few enough rules (have to make it legal in the country, afterall) to sort of mimic it. yea, in a street fight you may face weapons, multiple opponents, etc... and yea, street fights look different. but in street fights there isnt a super trained ufc fighter vs another super trained ufc fighter, its two punks trying to hurt eachother. still, the ufc has proven the effectiveness of certain arts, and, lets face it- anyone that trained in those same arts would probably win a street fight.

To strike or to grapple

true true, plus, its not like someone purely trained in grappling doesnt know how to mount someone then pound on them. it is, afterall, pretty easy to figure out. -

so lately ive been working out and everything- but my muscles get really, really sore; and for days at a time. i want to gain more muscle mass, but i need to train, and such soreness interferes with it. so what can people suggest for getting size and power while not interfering with my training four to five days a week?
