Masahiko Kimura vs Helion Gracie
YODA replied to ChangWuJi's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
This was an awesome fight - I've had the tape for some years. People who dis Helio for losing the fight and thus say BJJ is inferior to Judo. They should take into consideration the fact that he was vastly outweighed & that Kimura later invited Helio to Japan to teach at the Budokan - must have thought he had something to offer? -
If Aikido is your choice then this looks like a great place to learn it. Aikido is a great art with many benefits for it's practitioners. I don't believe realistic self protection to be one of those benefits. I thought their weapons kata page was very well put together - "bookmarked!" A few things to consider though... - Aikido is not the sort of art you can just take for the summer. It takes years of continuous study to even begin to make it applicable. A student of mine is a Sandan with 20 years Aikido and HE finds it hard to make some of the stuff work. - Aikido is not what I would call "Grappling" but more a study in range, redirection and energy flow. If you want to learn to fight with grappling then consider something that fights both standing & on the ground and that contests it's techniques - you absolutely MUST spar otherwise you are doing little more than learning something "about fighting" rather than learning "fighting". Cool site though _________________ YODA KarateForums Sempai 2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima https://www.docepares.co.uk Qualified Instructor : JKD Concepts https://www.jkdc.co.uk Qualified Fitness Instructor (Weights, CV, Circuit, Kinesiology) [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-04-21 03:05 ]

You do spinning heels to close doors & don't notice it? Wow! You need to pay attention  -
Ok - you make many wild assumptions about what I posted & why I posted it. A few questions... 1. "Relax. You do not know me" ------ Don't worry, I'm relaxed, whether I know you or not. 2. Where did I say he raises his arm or that I would try to grab the knife? I used an example of the type of attack that I know is widely practiced against. It was a starting point - a point of reference for future discussion - I agree with your assessment of it - why the confrontational tone of your post? There's no need for it. 3. "I had read some of your other posts and was beginning to think you mature in the martial arts. I have now been proven wrong." ----- I've been training in the arts for the last 23 of my 39 years - I'm mature enough to include details of who I am & where I can be found in my profile. You? I believe we are more alike than you realise - why not drop the macho chest thumping and try to add some constructive & mature critique instead?

This is why I was reluctant to start this thread in the 1st place. I bow down to your deadly efficiency "Martial_Artist" - you must truly be an awesome warrior. I bet no grappler could take you down either huh?

Hey Taikudo-ka - It doesn't count if there's no-one is there! You have to give a good "Waataaah" too -
A panda walks into a bar, sits down and orders a sandwich. He eats the sandwich, pulls out a gun and shoots the waiter dead. As the panda stands up to go, the bartender shouts, "Hey! Where are you going? You just shot my waiter and you didn't pay for your sandwich!" The panda yells back at the bartender, "Hey, I'm a PANDA! Look it up!" The bartender opens his dictionary and sees the following definition for panda: "A tree dwelling marsupial of Asian orgin, characterized by distinct black and white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves.

According to statistics, last year over 17 million American families paid a lot of money for things that looked funny and didn't work. Seven million of these were antiques; the rest were college students.

Man: Do you serve breakfast here? Waitress: Sure; what'll it be?" Man:Let me have watery eggs?some burnt toast?and some weak coffee, lukewarm. Waitress: Whatever you say, sir. Man: Now, are you doing anything while that order is going through? Waitress: Why?no, sir. Man: Then sit here and nag me a while?I'm feeling homesick.

Yes - Yes -
Actually - the reason I asked Kanazawa Sensei was that there are 2 Nunchaku kata in his book - "Dynamic Nunchaku" and I was interested in their history! They are called Bu Ho No Kata Shodan (which would suggest that there are more) and Ju Ho No Kata - I wonder if HE compiled them?

Maybe so Ad - but bet they've been put together recently. I could knock up a Kata for chucks in a couple of hours or so - people do it all the time for freestyle forms competitions.
