Let me know when you have it Ad

In my opinion Abaniko (The Fan) is vastly over-rated. It has it's uses as a set up strike but it lacks the kind of power I like to generate. In Doce Pares we have a strike that is similar but more powerful - my instructor calls it "Sidewinder" - similar to an abaniko but you pull your hand back towards you to increase the torque of the stike and also facilitate the use of the blade.

Just a small point - Eskrima is an art, not a weapon. Asking to buy an Eskrima is like asking to buy a Karate. Common terms for the stick used in Eskrima include... Olisi Garote Baston and my favourite ---- Stick Make sure you buy rattan with the skin still intact, not the fancy shelled toy that most martial arts suppliers sell. _________________ YODA KarateForums Sempai 2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima https://www.docepares.co.uk Qualified Instructor : JKD Concepts https://www.jkdc.co.uk Qualified Fitness Instructor (Weights, CV, Circuit, Kinesiology) [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-05-03 12:28 ]

Hi MA "Your teacher, guessing because he is from Cebu, probably speaks Cebuano, Visayan, and Tagalog" - Yes, he does - I think he speaks 9 in total includinmg English, or what he calls English LOL! No - I'm not learning Tagalog - just bought the dictionary in an attempt to undferstand a little more - I may do one day though & I'll certainly remember your kind offer. Do you study the Filipino arts too? On a semi-related issue - I am part of a small private group devoted to stickfighting in as real a manner as we can. I assume you're familiar with the Dog Brothers format? This is what we do. As I said we are a private group that exists just to further our progress without the lure of egos or trophies. We are called the "Pusong Leyon" Stickfighters. I have been told by some that I should seperate the "Puso" and the "Ng" - and by others that they should be combined as "Pusong" - What do you make of that? The name refers both th the spirit in which we fight and also to our English heritage!

No Ad - it's different. Works more on your timing & control of cadence. Still a great tool though but it must be set up right.

i have a pair of Sai that I no longer use - I have no need for them. They are quite long - Octagonal and chromed with a little pitting but still look good. They are in a red lined leather case. Free to a good home - i.e someone who will use them rather than hang them on their bedroom wall Tobias - anyone from your end coming past Wigan on the M6 could easily pick them up sometime.

Yep - not many, but yep.

Martial_Artist - Now that's much better I agree with most of what you say, apart from the "avoid the knife & treat it like a fist" thing. I believe that you must do these things and in this order unless you either very lucky or very skilled - and if given the chance for a "pot shot" I would take it... - Avoid the strike - Stop the limb - Control the limb - Do damage. Lot's of damage - Disarm in a maner that gives YOU the knife. Sounds complex but in reality takes only a few seconds if done efficiently. The problem with a sharp knife over a fist is it only needs to move an inch by his design or by luck and it can cut you deeply - consider the damage a small craft knife or scalpel can do when flaied around at close range. Given enough time & space (which as you say is rare) I would look for an equaliser. being proficient with a wide range of weapons I would look to either draw what I had or use something at hand to even the score. Kicking a knife out of a hand is just suicide - I'll say no more an that one. A final point - you say "I don't give information out over web boards like this. Call me paranoid" - Ok - you're paranoid

Interesting - my teacher, a native of Cebu, goes nuts if he sees "Escrima" and says "No - that is the western spelling - there is No "C" in my country" - Interesting as he comes from "C"ebu and studied under "C"iracoa "C"anete amongst others. Interesting also is the total lack of the letter "C" in the Tagalog section of my Tagalog-English dictionary. You've got me thinking now - which is good

Victorian BJJ Championships
YODA replied to Dutch's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
My point is .... 1. When someone aplies an armbar or choke you feel discomfort / pain in advance of any damage - so it's easy to tell when to tap. 2. A heel hook i.e. rotationlaa knee lock, is different. Often the 1st pain you will feel is as the joint breaks - and it's a musch nastier injury than popping an elbow - it's the rotation that does the damage. Ankle locks & straight knee-bars are ok. -

You'll be fine - Sure, you'll be nervous before then event, right up to going on stage - but as soon as you get stuck into your routine you'll forget that & have a ball Go for it!
-
Oh yeah - there's lots you can do! Do you know any more specifics like what style of FMA they do? I can definately help you prepare
-
Hey Bon - that's not a speed ball, it's a floor to ceiling ball, or somethimes called a top & bottom bag. Great tool though

Do you live in England.... (I'm assuming not as there's so 'cos there's no such think as IBH in English law.) "Grievous Bodily Harm With Intent. Section 18 Offences Against The Person Act 1861---- Same levels of injury as a Section 20 (Broken bones, damage that is visable but not permanent), but with theintent to do such harm. Carries a power of arrest. Likely to receive a custodial sentence. Maximum - life imprisonment." Looks like you got off lightly. A drunk throws a punch at a martial arts instructor, which he easily avoids - at that stage what was the actual threat level to yourself? Ever hear the term "Reasonable Force?" It's very hard to justify you're choice of technique - you can't headbutt someone a little bit as a restraining move - a headbutt has one goal, as does a knee to the face (twice!)

What Makes A Good Martial arts teacher/student (long)
YODA replied to Taokara's topic in Instructors and School Owners
"Direct Spiritual Expereince: To be able to appreciate Religious Scripture to its fullest , requires that one have direct spiritual experience. This usually is perceived as one haveing come to the realization or experience of reality itself... in other words a direct encounter with god or dainichi Nyorai ( personified aspect of the dharmakaya.) " --- Well, that kinda rules me out then. I must be a real poor martial arts teacher by that standard. Still - I do have quite a good record for a) teaching people to fight and b) turning people's lives around and bringing them away from "The Dark Side"
