  1. Krabi Kabrong is awesome! I don't have much esperience in it apart from a few seminars but it seems very practical - a logical addition to your skills if learning Muay Thai. The "toe-knife" thing sounds more like a Silat type thing.
  2. Sounds like a fun day - my students took an Eskrima grading with my Instructor yesterday - and all 8 who took them passed - Woo Hooo. What was involved with your gradings? What weapons & format? Kata? Application? Sparring?
  3. Hi all Here's a quotation that means a lot to me. Does it "speak" to you too? "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you"...Friedrich Nietzsche
  4. Hi all - a passage for you to ponder "When the spiritual teacher and his disciples began their evening meditation, the cat who lived in the monastery made such noise that it distracted them. So the teacher ordered that the cat be tied up during the evening practice. Years later, when the teacher died, the cat continued to be tied up during the meditation session. And when the cat eventually died, another cat was brought to the monastery and tied up. Centuries later, learned descendants of the spiritual teacher wrote scholarly treatises about the religious significance of tying up a cat for meditation practice." --- can you see the significance here to the martial artist?
  5. yes - sparring is vital. No sparring - go somewhere else!
  6. Hmmm...... "Toughest" was the question, bot "Best" For best I would agree with Rickson. Toughest - I think Yuki Nakai has showed a LOT of toughness on several levels.
  7. Hi "Forever" OK - I'll deal with these one at a time... "how to mount an intermediate lvl grappler when you are in the guard position?" Are we punching etc too? Wearing a Gi? I'll assume this is grappling only with a Gi for now. I assume you mean you have him in your guard? If he's intermediate level he will know all the basic sweeps & reversals, so you must work in combination. You could use what we in JKD call ABD - Attack by Drawing. Open your legs and stick your right foot tight under his left armpit whilst pushing him away - this will create space & draw him into going for the achilles lock on your right leg. Make sure through the above that you maintain a grip on him with your right hand, ideally at his right lapel. As he goes for the achilles lock he will probably step up with his left foot - leaving his right thigh vertical - i.e. very prone to being swept. Switch your right knee across his chest and scoot your hips to the right - this should set up a good scissor sweep into your mount. If you are not familiar with things like the basic scissor sweep & the achilles lock then I doubt very much your chances of success against an intermediate level grappler anyway - but if you need more techical details ask away. OK - setting up the single leg without getting kicked... A few ideas for you to try... 1. Draw his attention to the high line somehow - maybe a fake a high punch. Then shoot for the single. 2. Try entering as he's moving away - throw a low kick & as he moves back shoot for your single. It's a lot hader to kick whilst moving backwards. 3. Draw his kick, as he retracts it shoot for the single. Hope that helps, if you want more just holler
  8. I've been taking Glucosamine for a few years now & have very good results with it. I tried the Glucosamine & Chondroitin mix and didn't notice any difference - so I stick with the GS on its own. 500mg twice per day.
  9. I got a PS2 for Christmas too! Err..... well, actually I bought it for my two daughters but hey, I may as well play too Airblade is VERY good - addictive too! My girls love Dark Cloud - keeps 'em quiet for hours. They are waiting patiently for February when ECCO The Dolphin is due for release on the PS2 - we have the demo version and it looks pretty cool. 10. Hi all I teach Balisong to my Eskrima students, being a Filpino weapon it is part of our study. We use it both open (then it's a knife lke any other) or closed as a "tabak maliit" or "pocket stick". As far as openings go we have a basic criteria - no matter how you pick it up yopu must be able to open it quickly into both labgit (heaven) and lupa (earth) grip. Ater that anything else is just coordination training & FUN! (Fun's ok in martial arts -right?)
