Hi Dragon Make sure you get plenty of fluids before, during & after your workout - a good rule of thumb is that if you let yourself get thirsty you left it too late. Take a good quality multi-vitamin & mineral supplement daily. This and a nice slow stretch after class should help with your cramps. That banana is a good idea too - It's the Potassium!

"I just want to let everyone know that this is my personal experience, I don't claim to be a certified fitness instructor or anything like that" ..... Errrrrrr.... I DO! 'Cos I am Ahem.... I find that I get the best results from about 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight. For me that's about 175g per day. Don't forget though that this is grammes of actual protein, not grammes of meat. For example, 100g of lean Turkey breast contains about 25g Protein. But even with that you'll only actually assimilate about 15g -That's what makes good quality Whey Protein Isolate supplemenst so good - you take a serving that says 25g protein and you'll assimilate about 95-99% of that.

Hey KickCkick - if you took half an asprin with that guarana & ma huang mix you'd kick it up another notch I tried the Glucosamine/Chondroitin mix a while back and didn;t notice any difference from just the Glucosamine on it's own. _________________ YODA 2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima Instructor : JKD Concepts http://www.jkdc.co.uk / http://www.docepares.co.uk [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-01-29 14:25 ]

What should I take?
YODA replied to Joecooke007's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Hi Joe Hakkoryu is a fairly modern style by Japanese standards - dating back to the 1940's. It is, however, very "Classical" in it's approach - so expect a lot of, pre-arranged partner work, two-man Kata etc and no sparring. If this is what you want then go for it - enjoy! For more info check out http://www.hakkoryu.com _________________ YODA 2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima Instructor : JKD Concepts http://www.jkdc.co.uk / http://www.docepares.co.uk [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-01-29 10:40 ] -
Starting at White Belt again is great - it keeps your outlook focused on what is important - learning, rather than being overly concerned with a strip of coloured cloth. One of my students is an Aikido Sandan, and has his own Aikido Dojo. Although he is my student in Eskrima I have absolutely no hesitation putting on a white belt when receiving instruction in Aikido from him. If your ego cannot handle putting on a white belt then there's a problem.

Do you see it?
YODA replied to YODA's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
So - everyone seems to agree that tradition for the sake of it is not good. Let's look at the other side of the coin now. Have some gone too far in the other direction? Here's a quote from Sijo Bruce Lee, a man definately more concerned with functionality rather than tradition... "Do not deny the Classical approach simply as a reaction, for you will have created another pattern and trapped yourself there." I see a lot of JKD people thus trapped these days. _________________ YODA 2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima Instructor : JKD Concepts http://www.jkdc.co.uk / http://www.docepares.co.uk [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-01-29 10:27 ] -

Howdy Phantasmic - pretty new here myself. See you around the boards!

...... neither will unarmed combat skills or the ability to dance with oriental farming tools. You MAY have the edge with a decent M16A2 Combat Rifle in your hands and a trusty old Browning High Power 9mm in your belt kit. Strap a L96A1 Sniper Rifle to your back and you have things pretty well covered.

SHOULD I CROSS-TRAIN
YODA replied to blood talon's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Hmmmm..... a lot of people get confused with the term "cross training." Originally the term cross training was used in sports when an athlete would do other forms of sport or training that would benefit his/her main sport - like a Sprinter may do cycling to hit the legs from another angle. Grappling, whilst a VERY good method (one of my faves) will not make you a better Thia Boxer and is therefore not really cross training. A Thai Boxer going to a Boxing gym to work his hands - THAT is cross training. Now then - if our Thai Boxer's main goal is to be an all round fighter - THEN the grappling would be cross training. Yeah, I know, I'm nit picking -
Thanks Tobias - I understand now. I also train stuff that is not designed to teach me to fight. Nothing wrong with that as long as we know why we are doing what - and that our training is appropriate to our motives for doing it. I train a lot of my stuff for practical combative reasons. I also do things for the sake of art or personal development. My 16 or so Eskrima weapons forms & Iaido Kata are just two of those.

On committing "herecy"... Jigaro Kano Mas Oyama Morihei Ueshiba Bruce Lee ... All men who bucked tradition & committed heracy

Howdy From a martial artists viewpoint the important question is not... "Are you afraid to die?" but is... "Are you prepared to die?" I fear death. I fear the effect it would have on my Children. But I would die to protect them - no doubt about that!

LOL! Let's see if I can help "part the fog" for you Prodigy-child Many of today's martial artists are getting more & more into role playing & "street" oriented training. I see people shouting & swearing at each other in class in an attempt to mimic what happens on the street. When they gaze in to the abyss - the mind of the street thug - they maybe risk becoming exatcly that which they seek to defend against.? Make sense?

SHOULD I CROSS-TRAIN
YODA replied to blood talon's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Hi BT If you ARE going to add to your Muay Thai training then I beleive you've found a good choice. They should already have integrated much of Muay Thai into their methods - and their stance should eb very much compatible with your Muay Thai boxing stance. Where is this club & who is the Instrcutor - maybe I can do a little homework for you on their lineage etc.? -
Is it actual JKD?
YODA replied to The JKD Kid's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Hi all I think there is some confusion here between two things.... Jeet Kune Do - The holistic PROCESS of study that we follow in our pursuit of totatlity in combat - we utilise the philosophy & "concepts" of JKD in this PROCESS. You see, Jeet Kune Do is not a product, a destination - it is the journey Jun Fan Gung Fu (others call it Jun Fan JKD) - This is the physical art actually taught by SiJo Bruce Lee to his students. It makes a great base from which to travel the JKD path and is an essential area of our study - in fact it is our "core". So - JKD / JKDC contains Jun Fan Gung Fu, but we are not limited or "bound" by it. We use all ways - and are bound by none. Hope that makes sense. -
Hi Tobias "hojo-undo" - that's what we used to call "supplementary training" back in my Goju-Ryu days - Things like the Chi-ishi, weight training etc. How does that relate to your weapons training? - Is it just basic Kata type movements? If you don't spar, how do you know that you will have the timing etc to actually fight with your weapons against a non-complaint foe? Or is that not one of your goals? A bit like me with my study of Iaido - I have NO intention of fighting with my Katana

Yep - what Ken said! I'd like to add - make sure you wear shorts when using the Thai Pads & Heavy Bag - i.e. bare shins. -
