Woah stop right there! Many FINE martial artists have been taught by that little green alien from Dagobah --- and did you know it's officially Star Wars day in just a few weeks time? On the 4th day of next month to be precise. "May the 4th be with you"

From Peak Performance Magazine.... If you want to lose weight, should you sizzle or saunter during your workouts? Sizzling - exercising at a high intensity - is an attractive idea, since it chews up calories at at lofty rates. On the other hand, sauntering - training at a low intensity - doesn't seem so bad, either, since it permits longer workouts and increases the proportion of fat in the 'fuel mix' used by your muscles for energy. Low-to-moderate intensity workouts are also safer for individuals with potential cardiovascular problems. However, scientific research has been unable to establish firmly which training intensity is best for fat loss. To establish the actual fat-trimming benefits of highversus low-intensity workouts, scientists at Laval University in Quebec recently asked two groups of people to participate in different exercise programmes. Seventeen subjects (eight men and nine women) trained on an exercise bicycle four to five times per week for 20 weeks. The workouts lasted from 30 to 45 minutes, and exercise intensity ranged from 60-85 per cent of maximal heart rate. During a 15-week period, a second group of 10 subjects (five men and five women) completed 25 30-minute workouts at an intensity comparable to that attained by the first group. However, the second group also conducted 19 short-interval and 16 longinterval sessions during the 15-week programme. The short-interval sessions consisted of 10 to 15 intervals lasting for 15-30 seconds, while the long-interval efforts were composed of four to five intervals with a duration of 60-90 seconds. Recovery periods between intervals allowed heart beats to drop to 120-130 beats per minute, and the actual exercise intensity within intervals gradually reached 90-95 per cent of maximal as the training programme progressed. Because the first group worked out for a longer time period (20 against 15 weeks), conducted more total workouts (90 against 60 sessions) and completed longer individual training sessions, total energy expenditure during training was twice as great in the first group as in the second group. However, each group achieved about a 30-per-cent increase in maximal aerobic capacity. Most surprisingly, the second group (the interval-trained athletes who performed less total work) had a NINEFOLD greater loss of body fat than the first group. Why did interval work lead to larger losses of lard? The intense cycling efforts may have produced a slightly greater gain in muscle mass in the interval athletes. Since muscle tissue ordinarily has a huge appetite for fat, this can have positive consequences for fat loss. Interval efforts may also have aggrandized 'PET' - the post-exercise thermogenesis, or increased burning of calories which takes place after every workout. High-intensity exertions seem to make PET larger. It's also possible that interval training specifically enhances fat metabolism during this PET period, an effect which could have contributed to greater fat loss in the high-intensity subjects. Some studies have also suggested that athletes' appetites increase to a smaller extent following high-intensity workouts than after easy exertions. And it's also possible that hard workouts do a better job of promoting the release of human growth hormone (HGH) from the pituitary gland. HGH is a potent stimulator of fat metabolism. Although the Laval researchers weren't certain about the exact fat-loss mechanisms associated with interval workouts, they concluded that fat loss is greater when exercise intensity is high. Individuals who want to lose weight - and who are free from cardiovascular disease - should profit from a step-up in their workout intensities. Just got back from seeing the quack about my knee. Last week on the penultimate day of our camp - I was sparring (all ranges) with one of my guys & we ended up on the ground with me on top in a cross-body position. We were on the flattened top of a mountain where there used to be a medieval fort - very "Weathertop" (but I digress ) As I was establishing my superior position two students who were also grappling rolled into us - and right over my ankle (my heel was up) - There was a loud CRACK from my left knee as my ankle was folded flat to the floor. Yeeeeouch! It hurt at the time for about 5 minutes then was OK - I even ran the 2 miles or so back to base (stupid - hindsight is always 20/20). Next morning I could hardly walk! So - it seems I've torn my Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and may need surgery. Doc says NO physical activity from now until I see the specialist in 6-8 weeks- Yeah, Right! Doh! Doh! Doh! Did I mention [b/DOH![/b] ? Anyone had this? Any advice apart from the dreaded 4 letter word - Rest

On the original subject --- I would love to study Iaido properly. I trained in it about 5 years ago but start again if I could find decent instruction - I still play at it but I'm sure MANY errors have crept in. -
I'm here also - welcoming you to karateforums Helloooo So - tell us a little about what you do in the arts? You profile is a little bare

Problem - anyone help?

Hi Dutch & welcome to the forum Yes - the distancing & contact level makes sense. This would also explain why I find myself using the Yama off a winding throw. I like to sweep higher up on Harai also though. -

Why is it that so many people see "Black Belt" as an end product or time to do something else? I always thought Black Belt was the point at which you had a good understanding of the basics of your system - a time to begin the real training, not relax or go elsewhere. Or maybe it's because people still think it's impractical to study more than one system at once? Funny thing - I had no problem at school studying Maths & English - I didn't suddenly start trying to add up nouns or write sentences in algebra. You'de have to establish a few universal words that all martial artists can relete to. A good place to start would be..... Wattaaaah!!! Translation = "Take that you brute" _________________ YODA KarateForums Sempai 2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima https://www.docepares.co.uk Qualified Instructor : JKD Concepts https://www.jkdc.co.uk Qualified Fitness Instructor (Weights, CV, Circuit, Kinesiology) [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-04-07 15:24 ] [ This Message was edited by: YODA on 2002-04-07 15:24 ]

Yep - Jack, that's what I had in mind. If you had the cash to travel I'm pretty sure I could square things with your folks. This wouldn't be some random meet with a bunch of anonymous strangers - it would be a verifiable event with known people at a known venue - and your folks would be more than welcome to come along. In fact - they can easily find out who I am - my phone no is in every issue of Martial Arts Illustrated Magazine What I was thinking of was a martial arts seminar day where those of us at Instructor level could do a few hours each of our respective arts - we could hire a central location and maybe even make few quid for charity while we're at it.

Some decent advice has been posted so far - the best advice I can give you is to be very careful who you take advice from when it concerns your health. Everyone in cyberland can give you advice - and that's one of the dangers of accepting it. Listen to advice - check up sources of info & credentials for giving the advice - then make up your own mind. Here's my advice for what it's worth... Eat 5 to 6 small meals per day Drink lots of water - rule of thumb - don't get thirsty Take a general multivitamin & mineral supplement Eat 1200 - 1500 Caloroes per day - high protein, moderate complex carbs, low fat. Do moderate intensity aerobic training for 30-45 minutes 3 times per week. Do one high intensity interval session once per week. Do weight training with moderate weight in the 8-12 rep range twice per week. Monitor your bodyfat % as well as your weight - use calipers if available to measure change. Get on the weight loss club thread & keep us posted with your progress - let's support each other in the progress towards our goals.

Well - a week's hard training mixed with hard playing sees me back to what I was on my 1st post - 13st 4lbs. I reckon I lost fat on my training week though as I definately feel in better shape. Running 5 miles per day for 8 days must have shed some blubber. I swam every day too in addition to 5 hours of martial arts training. Pity I fell foul of a knee injury on the Thurday whilst sparring on the ground - doh! Hopefully I will be able to run again soon. I'm off work all this week - and some major hard work to do around the house & the garden together with eating right & training too should shed a few pounds.
