  1. well...they are legal! thats a major plus!
  2. Well I only been doig kung fu for a few months and recently took a freestyle combat class at my kwan (covers grapplings, groundwork, Sparring à la Sanda) and I think it compliments it well. I say grab the basics behind your "main" MA first then you may switch if you like/have time/have money.
  3. I only saw XMA on tv...all flash, not real stuff.
  4. Erm, about my comment of kyokushin being like kickboxing. well the only info I have about Kyo was from this site http://crane.50megs.com/index.html which covers different kickboxing style matchups. Kyo being one of the styles in question I figured it was similar. Oh and I understand the differences between the styles, but in essence I think its close enough to kicboxing, wether there are clinches, throws, knees or elbows.
  5. charles_mantha@hotmail.com add me up!
  6. This reminds me from a thrad on an other forum : Horse Stance or Squats? Like in this situation, both are beneficial. Why limit yourself to one? Do some slow speed sparring when you are with someone, and shadow box when you are alone.
  7. One time, i creeped behind my girlfriend and went "BOOH" and surprised her. She turned around and started slapping me while screaming...That is the closes "street" situation I ever got in .
  8. I said Yes because the question is kinda vague. Define an "element of self defense". Wether you take ma to fight or not, you will gain some fighting skills along the way, wether you know it or not.
  9. off topic. Heard my sifu has an official shaolin disciple name (o.O)
  10. It's 2am and I'm bored! So here it goes! Ok, so sunday was my 2nd freestyle combat session. So after warming up, stretching, getting some drills done, we put on gloves and did some kickboxing rounds. First round was against a guy I do kung fu with. Very dedicated and very aggressive. Well during one of his flury of punches he got me hard just below the wrist, didn't mind it much cuz right after that I did a low round kick at his knee and he wobbled a bit . But anyway, Monday morning I wake up and can barely move my right arm. X-rays shows no fractures, thankfullly, but looks like I'll have bare the pain for a week or two. So yeah..this is my first MA related injury, other than a few minor bruises and over stretched muscles (which I am really good at! ). Now your turn! Tell us all about your MA injuries!
  11. check out his speech http://www.whitecollarboxing.com/Video/Bill%20Wallace/BillWJeffO20.MPG He explains that all his kickboxing career he only had 5 weapons : side kick, round kick, hook kick, jab, left hook. only used his left side.
  12. http://www.swedishmuaythai.nu/1_1/111.asp Go to the menu, click on The Art Of Muay Thai then choose a link.
  13. Oh! Just remembered an article I read not long ago : http://crane.50megs.com/index6u.htm It talks about a theory that Wing Chun and Muay Thai have a common origin. Maybe your WC/Kickboxing class makes sense after all haha. ps : What do you guys think of the article?
  14. Muay Thai, Sanda, Kyokushin, Savate...it's all kickboxing!
  15. check out thise site for techniques : http://www.swedishmuaythai.nu/film/film.asp oh and I have read alot that crescent kicks weren't really good, does muaythai use em? : http://www.swedishmuaythai.nu/film/kick2.wmv I personally can't do a reverse crescent with much power yet, do they do the job in in the ring? ps: I never really took MT training. I have a combat class in which we do some kickboxing (think its closer to sanda rules) and plan on training some MT moves off that website. Are they good stuff?
  16. in my Combat classes, we do some kick boxing, teaches you how to move and get those kicks in a fight. Love it. Kyoshukin is somewhat like kickbocing too.
  17. kickboxing is cool, wing chun is cool. If the teachers are good. Go for it!
  18. That does not depend on the kung-fu style AT ALL! It depends on your kwoon and master! Ask them instead.
  19. ...the illegal kind?
  20. Well thats just the americans .
  21. I'd call a jump spin kick fancy, cuz I would not do it in a real confrontation.
  22. ...that is how all those horror internet stories start!
  23. (other styles have fancy kicks!)
  24. That is what escrima/kali/arnis and alot of philipno arts are about! They start with weapon training (sticks to replace swords or knives) and later get into empty hand training. Which kinda makes sense, since the Philipines have a bloody history of local wars, and a warrior would most likely fight with swords, empty hand only until he gets his hand on an other sword.
