  1. Muay Thai guys generally train harder and more often than most other martial artists because they are training for fights they know are going to happen. In the ring you learn what it feels like to get hit and to hit someone else. If you are better conditioned than the other guy you have alot better chance of surviving, thats how it can be more effective than arts which arnt sport orientated. they are conditioned to receive "legal" strikes....him him where they dont train for and they ain't better than the average joe.
  2. Anyone seen Kill Bill Vol2 ? When Black Mamba finghts ..Ping Mai? She uses White Tiger/crane vs his eagle claw....the fight ends with the silliest arm lock I've ever seen by Pai mai...
  3. guess it looks pretty, dunno I don't like it much either. dingyuan PM!
  4. What I have seen from fellow students doing snake style is that it uses finger strikes to attack soft spots, strikes from afar (as in striking while trying to stay out of reach, easier to do when you extend your fingers) and from below (crouching stances), "hypnotic fluidiity" or if you prefer snake like movements....and yeah thats it. The most important thing to take into account when doing animal forms is the animal's state of mind, not necessarily the physical appearance. A snake tries to be quick, strike without warning (well actually it will hiss and flair and * if it is threatened, but once this is done they strike so quick you never know when he is gonna strike until too late) and be vicious.
  5. Kempo seems to be the most popular...some ppl on this forum swears by Amercian Kempo. My kwan also gives chinese kempo classes, I might check it out one day, but the fact that there are children in this class kinda makes me think twice about joining it...just in my opinion a kid will get more from running outside or playing footbal (or insert whatver sport you like) than assisting some ma class which he is too young to fully understand anyway.
  6. oh my, your totally right....I got mixed up between the names sorry.
  7. Shin strenghtning : squats (with weights), repetitive MT round house on a heavy bag. If annyone can correct me : explosiveness can come from smaller weights and more repitions in your sets, instead of few repitions and heavier weights. EDIT : DLopez seems to know more about me un weight lifting : http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=15781&start=20
  8. Without dissing muay thai and any other fine MMAs, I think they are most popular because they are simpler and use a more direct approach. People hate making efforts nowadays (no, I did not just say MT takes less effort, im talking about a different kind of effort).
  9. yes but WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
  10. Thats what my sifu tells us all the time when we spar : to be relaxed. I find this to be something extremely difficult to do . Seems like we instinctively contract our muscles in response of some kind of threat.
  11. Can't be sure but it was founded by military veterans and is used for military purpose. In war a gun vs empty hand = death. If krav maga at least reduces the chances a little bit of dying, then it has accomplished its goal. No style can guarantee you techniques with complete efficiency. For example knife defense...if someone is close enough to maim you with a knife, there are good chances that you will get hurt. Knowing techniques against it will at least give you a better chance of not getting injured/diminishing the injuries over not knowing anything at all.
  12. JMA : Japanese Martial Art? PMA : Philipino Martial Arts.
  13. I am very interesed in Baji quan. As far as what I have been told, and read here and there. It is similar to tai chi (taoist response to tai chi perhaps? dunno which came first or if they are connected at all). It concentrates on circular movements and step-work. the translation means "the 8 fists of the organigram" or something like that, could you extrapolate on what the 8 fists are? Also is this trained in slow controlled movements (like tai chi) or is it explosive like other MAs...if you wish you can answer me in PM or a new thread if you don'T want to highjack this one (though it is my thread and I wouldn't mind at all). And....not enough ppl voted! More votes!
  14. Linda is his wife. And that Movie is not very loyal to Bruce Lee's life. So who knows. But I wouldn't be surprised if Bruce Lee wasn't a fan of belts since it is (at least was, don't know about today) unseen in chinese MAs. Even Japanese/Okinawan styles used to have only 2 belts...white and black. I don't have anything against belt systems. I think it makes it just way simpler to learn with such a system. You can concentrate on what you have to learn and get proficient in before moving on to other stuff, and with school these days, where students come and go whenever they want, its much simpler for the master to follow the students. And I find it that it helps my motivation, to have some short/middle term goals in my training. It only gets problematic when students depend too much on belts. the black belt is not the end of your training but a new beginning. And lower belts does/should not mean the student is inferior, or vice versa. And about the thread topic, well I have only read the last posts but Yip Man did not give away belts, so yeah Bruce did not finish his training with him but he was one of the most competant students. off topic : Apart from his dedication, bruce's talent comes from his (snake like) speed. Read somewhere this was partly due to his abnormaly fast metabolism.
  15. All i know..[/b]
  16. I'm getting there....reading "An introduciton to Buddhism: teachings, history and practices" by Peter Harvey .... Now all I need is the fancy robe (already got the hair cut)
  17. But what you just described as benefits of tkd sparrings is true with any MA sparring...What TKD lacks is close "in-fighting" ...where most of the damage is inflicted in a real combat. IMO, that is the most important range to get comfterbal (sp?) in.
  18. You mean your school doesn't do that?
  19. yeah...arts that teach you to kick the head as self-defense tends to be badly rated...I wonder why
  20. I almost hope one of em gets a crowbar out of a pocket...
  21. may I add that I just discovered this thread and it has the most retard3d title ever? Sorry if this post was not constructive but it had to be said, if not already.
  22. Bruce Lee did not create an art...he created principles, a philosophy to fighting. He himself said the goal of fighting is to fight without styles. His students decided to create JKD as a style.
  23. What is that supposed to mean?
