true, but these instructors are from the shaolin temple so shouldn't they teach all the applications it has?Not sure if this applies for everything they teach, but for alot of the forms they willingly teach they wont teach the applications, for it is reserved for monks. -
What is Wing Tsun?
MenteReligieuse replied to TKDguy's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Other chinese styles are very linear, like Hinsg Yi. Other styles dont possess any animal forms too, like Choy Li Fut (sp?). About not having many weapons, well there are the butterfly swords and the 8ft staff, as far as I know Tai Chi doesn't have many more weapons than that (sword/spear), nor does Hsing Yi (spear) or Natural Boxing(?), Hung Gar (tiger fork/stick), etc. But I'm sure someone will gladly correct me on that. About the subject, Wing Chun is a close fighting range martial art based on economy of motion and the body's centerline. Developping your sensitivity with different chi sao exercises (sticky hands), a proficient exponent can nullify and "predict" the movements of the opponent while attacking at the same time of keeping a strong defense. The kicks are not as developped as the hand work but they are mostly used against knees/lower leg and rarely ever go higher than the waist. -
Depends of his guard. Shorter distances does not necessarily mean lack of power, just takes longer to learn how to use the movement to it's maximum. The strenght of a punch is not linked to the distance it travels before hitting the target but the acceleration (amongst other things).

Why are they called "martial arts"?
MenteReligieuse replied to Zauriel's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Would be silly to call yourself Karateka if you don't do karate. -

This particular art used a "kuda". Sort of a sliding handle that they used to slide the spear through, isntead of using your hands. Gave more spead and a possibility of more reach on attacks. Here is a section of the article that discusses combat with such a spear : quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While moving forward to attack, the Owari Kan Ryu spearman must be able to thrust and quickly pull back, rapidly shortening the forward portion of the spear in order to compensate for a closing maai. And then be able to thrust effectively again. The thrust can be made from as close as a few inches away while gripping directly behind the spearhead. As well as moving forward to attack, the spearman must be able to thrust effectively while literally running backwards. If an opponent running forward with a sword manages to enter within the spearman's maai, the spearman must be able to back pedal quickly enough to allow time to shorten the spear and counter-thrust. Of course, side-stepping and other footwork are also practiced. Very few, if any, classical martial traditions in Japan utilized only one weapon. The trained warrior had to be able to contend against a wide variety of arms on the battlefield, and so was trained to be familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of all the main weapons. The man wielding the yari had to be able to adjust to the length and reach of any weapon he might encounter. Interestingly enough, when facing the tachi or kodachi (sword or short sword), the kodachi is considered the more effective weapon against the spear. This is because the shorter blade and single-hand use of the weapon allow greater mobility and agility in closing the maai against the spear. Nevertheless, a well-trained Kan Ryu spearman would not have much trouble in dealing with either weapon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also I recheked the standard lenght of the Kan ryu spear : 3.6 meters (11ft 10inch)!. For more info check this article out : http://www.koryubooks.com/library/harmstrong1.html

Most shaolin spears I have seen in vids and in online-shops are 7' long (6'staff with 1'head). I know for a fact that in sojutsu koryus (just think japanese spear arts) you have spears that can be 11 feet long and up. (Kan ryu spear : 3.6 meters (11ft 10inch)!) Were historical warfare chinese spears really just 7'long or was this regulated later for wushu?

Oh, I'm not buying the book because I beleive it will reveal me the "secrets" about whatever . Read the "preview" over amazon and found it interesting. Also bought Shaolin Lohan Kung-Fu by P'Ng Chye Khim, Donn F. Draeger cause I do mitsun lohan and the book is co-written by Donn F. Draeger (a famous hoplologist). Best part is that I'm not paying x-mas gift!

What can you hate about running? Get a friend or two to run with you, get fresh air! -
Hmm, usually working out always worked for me. Else I lose myself in a good book. The key is to get your mind off the source of your stress.

The three section staff VS. Bo- staff

I got an awesome performance between a bo vs three rod staff fight (probably choreagraphed wushu) .... only one hit touches and its a kick which sent the staff user sprawling, rofl. -

Maybe this has said before, but here is my 2 cents. Karate originated in Okinawa. Jujutsu was the unarmed ryu of the japanese warriors (which of course favored throws over punches because ppl used armour back then). Japan conquered Okinawa. So the two styles HAS to have influenced each other to some extent. Now you owe me 2 cents!

A quick google search got me a bunch of game rules about weeping blades.. Poisoned blades were used in history but not often, doubt they ever got named "weeping blades".

Talking about invisibility. Ninjas (the real ones) had a bunch of tricks to deceive enemies when they were on mission. Like ways to leave foot prints so that it seems you are going in two directions at same time, follow shadows, or more direct combat aplication where you use odd angles or objects (throwing sand) or more directly sticking a finger in one of your opponents eye and moving on his new blind side. Some of my favorite ones from the book "The Grandmaster's book of ninja training" by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi: Or again the technique of concealment named muton yuho, or the taijutsu of moving about in the mist... Dunno if these things actually work but sure is funny.

Battoujutsu - Help/assistance
MenteReligieuse replied to DireEyes's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Aikido is not a sword drawing style. It is a style who has sources in Daito-Ryu aikijujutsu and other koryus used by ancient samurai. Kinda looks like judo if you wish..but then not quite.
