  1. I found this on another forum and thought I'd share it with you considering here at Karateforums.com we train in so many arts and many of us don't know that much about the others. Four blind men went to the zoo. While there, they asked a keeper if they could feel an elephant to give themselves some idea of what the animal looked like. One man felt it’s ear and decided that the beast must be like a fan. Another man felt it’s tusk and immediately announced it was like a spear. The third man, meanwhile, was touching the enormous mammals trunk and knew straight away that that the beast must resemble a snake. The fourth man investigated the tail and jumped to the conclusion that the elephant was like a rope. Unless you have truly studied an art in it’s entirety and to a great depth, how can we know what the whole picture is ? let us not draw quick conclusions from the little we see at competitions and through the windows of McDojos.
  2. Where do you find the time to find all this stuff?
  3. You can stuff a snowsuit with blankets and pillows and use that as a grappling dummy. I have a younger brother who is a wrestler, and he is more than willing most of the time to let me try new stuff out on him
  4. Thanks a lot, Kickchick...I was working on an essay on why the Virginia "moment of silence" law was unconstitutional.
  5. If they fail one of the checks, that means big trouble and lots of intesnse training with the instructor...no one really ever fails those unless guys who have been slacking off on their training.
  6. That's a really good story. Shows how in BJJ, sometimes superior technique can squash the stringest, fiercest opponent.
  7. Kickboxing sounds good for you, as does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - most BJJ schools spar a lot during every class.
  8. They don't move "straight" to anything. They have to have checks, or re-tests every now and then anyway, but when my instructor thinks a person is ready to make the transition, they have to test over again with other adult candidates for black belt.
  9. The base on the XXL is excessively large - my instructor has a bunch of realy good ones i will ask him what brand they are
  10. A junior black belt only gets his or her black belt when they really deserve it - many kids still aren't at their full phsycial and mental maturity at age 16 anyway. Some get it at 16, but my friend just turned 18 and she made the switch after 4 years at junior black belt. The number 16 is just a guide number.
  11. Are you using this for adults or kids? Also, beginners have a tendency to leave their foot on the bag for too long and knock over the smaller ones.
  12. Does anyone know what religions get down on their knees in order to pray? This would save my essay! Thank you guys sooooo much!
  13. G95, how did you choose the age 16? Just curious. My instructor's age for black belt is 16, too - but he gives Junior BB's to younger kids, meaning that they have the best technique that a kid can have, but still aren't physically and mentally ready to wear the black. My instructor, however, never says "never" as far as testing kids for black belt. Although he very strictly upholds the 16 age, a guy who is 14 just recieved his black belt after years of hard training and wearing a junior black. The kid can "hang" with the adult BB's, so IMHO he deserves one. He is the only kid under 16 to ever get a real black belt in my school. I'll most likely be 15 when I test. My instructor believes there is a chance I may be the youngest ever female BB at our school. Who knows.
  14. I was pointing out the ignorance of many on the other forums. That forum is THE BEST when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but those guys have big egos to match their cauliflower ears!
  15. In a dobok, the top is open, v-necked and is a pull over. the lapels of a karategi are either tied or rely on the belt to be held together, so basically they have a collar that extends all the way to the skirt of the jacket. The pants are the same.
  16. I tried it on my brother - it's very effective but it took millions of tries to grasp.
  17. I train in TKD, but I like wearing karategis better than doboks, and my favorite gis are made by KI - I wear a KI judogi for BJJ, too!
  18. I only train with the gi (so far - just started) and on an opponent with a kimono or without, a rear naked choke is a rear naked choke, a knee bar is a knee bar, the mount is the mount - the game is just a little different, and many jiu-jitsu schools offer you to train in both gi and no-gi.
  19. Observe a class at any and every dojo you can find! Become aware of many styles.

  21. Tae kwon do - not enough emphasis on clinch technique - elbows, knees, boxing punches, takedowns, etc. Brazilain Jiu-Jitsu - not good against multiple opponents.

  23. I would consider Brazilain Jiu-Jitsu a Western art...I know it evolved from Kano's judo, but most of the techniques are unique to the style. Also, boxing is a western "martial sport". And savate...that comes from France.
  24. You are a pathetic loser if you attack ANYONE like that (sex doesn't matter, stupidity does)
  25. And post your reflections. http://jiu-jitsu.net/board/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000985
