  1. K4J4, how do you set up the kimura? I have a hard time getting to that position unless I try for the chest-on-chest sweep and it fails. I rarely see opponents who put their arms down while trapped in the guard.
  2. Hey - even though I am a tae kwon do and brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist, I have dabbled here and there in nunchaku, simply for fun and show, not fighting with them. Does anyone know of any sites with some of the more "flashy" techniques? I think I have most of the basics down! Thanks!
  3. Hey BlueDragon, aren't you a brown belt? In certain arts it is better to wait until 2nd or 3rd dan until opening a school. Others, like BJJ, have purple belts opening VERY successful schools. What is your art?
  4. Well, I have two summer jobs...one of them helping out two days a week at my dojang is full year; I'm also working in my dad's office doing secretarial crap two days a week. Next year, I'll be a sophomore in high school (10th grade). My favorite subject is English - literature and writing are my two favorite things besides martial arts! My least favorite is math - next year I have to take Algebra2/Trigonometry, and it is going to stink! hehe.
  5. Sambo was created in the 1930's as a method of hand to hand combat for the Soviet military after the Russo-Japanese War. A sport form of it was created so that it could be practiced safely, and has now become an International Sport which is seen all over the world. In the Sambo fights i have watched, there was standup fighting, low kicks mostly, then the takedown, then grappling. Sambo is well-known for it's deadly array of leglocks. Personally, I train in BJJ, so I'm a little impartial, but I don't think of BJJ as a sport. It's an art, and the way the principles are conveyed in early training is through point matches, where you get more points for the places you'd want to be on the street - 4 points for mount and backmount. All beginners in my experience, should learn BJJ with the gi first, then move on to no-gi training. I watched a class once where the instructor and students came to class wearing jearns and a tee-shirt, much like you'd be wearing on the street. Vale tudo, or "anything goes" in Portugese, is a type of fighting, and if you train vale tudo in a BJJ class, the aim will be to take your opponent to the ground and submit them.
  6. Hm....I am a teenage girl, so I am smaller and naturally do a lot of work from the guard. I enjoy the traingle choke; it's one of my stronger moves, and if somepone pulls away I can transition to an armbar from the guard. That's my favorite move. I also like working on sweeps and those are what I think I need to improve most in my game.
  7. LMAO! You like the religion cracks, no?
  8. "The referee will always be looking the other way when you score." Ugh! The other day we did point sparring in class, and three of the ringside judges were my three brothers! They made a point to have all different responses after my instructor stopped each time@
  9. I thought Martial Arts began as a cool way to keep monks in shape, and it was practical too? I guess I've been humbled again!
  10. American laws, in my opinion and the opinion of the framers of the constitution, should not use the Bible as any justification for what is morally right and wrong. If two people love each other, they should have the oppurtunity to get married just like anyone else. Since two males can't have a child, they should be able to adopt one that wouldn't have a home anyway. Love is love no matter if it comes from a single mom, two dads, or a mom and dad!
  11. I'd reather be really proficient at one or two arts than be mediocre in ten and try to fuse them together. You'd have to give up elements of some.

  13. Personally, I am not that far in the TKD forms, but I love performing yol guk (spelling) and my favorite form to watch, becauuse I stink at the beginnind and need to work on it, is kwang gae.
  14. There is no specific way for us, either. Just elbows in, keep them up. In my experience, I don't like to keep them up really high though - I find it easier to bring my hands UP to block somethign to the head than bring them really low to block something to, say the belly or groin.
  15. Can you explain how your instructor teaches, exactly? I have heard of people with no or limited use of the legs learning martial arts, but never teaching them. This is very intruiging to me By the way, welcome to the boards.
  16. You sound to me like a well-learned artist. Hope you like it here, I'm such a nerd I have almost 500 posts!
  17. I started tae kwon do when I was eleven - my three brothers had gotten into it and had just had their first grading....my parents didn't like the idea of their daughter in the MA's, but I'm the oldest, and eventually I caught up to my brothers, who are 13, 10, and 9. We all train very hard, and have earned our red belts together. I am also the youngest non-black belt who assists in teaching young beginners. I train with both adults and juniors in tae kwon do, so I can learn all parts of the curriculum with different people. About three or four months ago, my instructor, who is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, started introducing more BJJ into our TKD curriculum (he had always had little bits in it) and started teaching BJJ with his friends from the jiu-jitsu school at our tkd place. I am the only girl in my class. I'm a white belt in BJJ, and it's definitely just as fun as TKD.
  18. I think we are forgetting Maedo's sort of misnomer, calling BJJ BJJ instead of South Amerixcan Judo or something, because besically it is a direct descendant, just modified by the Gracies.
  19. Gold weave is a kind of fabric used in some of the BJJ gis I've seen. Here is an explanation I got from http://www.jiujitsuconnection.com... "WHAT IS GOLDEN WEAVE Is made out of 100% cotton fabric, and is commonly used in the furniture business in Brazil. The weave is interwoven into a square base cloth similar to a Waffle Pattern. Mizuno has designed and produced a new a Golden Weave Hybrid. Constructed of the latest technology, light weight and stronger than any Golden Weave out there. Currently Adidas is using the same design and material from Mizuno's Conquest series for their Signature Jiu-Jitsu line. NOTE: NOT ALL BJJ FEDERATIONS REQUIRE FOR PLAYERS TO USE ONLY THE GOLDEN WEAVE KIMONO!"
  20. I'm reading a book called I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb...he's the author of She's Come Undone too...both are awesome books!
  21. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. He was born in Scotland, then he lived in England, and in Ontario for a little while. His inventing career didn't begin until he moved to Boston. He lived in various spots on the US east coast, and that's where the famous inventions were made.
  22. If you watch the first two or three UFC's, the UFC was just a big chance for the Gracies to "break" their game....in Royce's first fight in the octagon, he gained mount and the opponent tapped right then! Yes, it has become geared more towards grappling, fixing may be going on, blah blah blah. The contest was originally started with good intentions.
  23. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique isn't all that good. Many of the tecniques are very cool, but it has way too many things like headlock escapes (something like 5) and even has a guard pass guaranteed to get you caught in the triangle every time. However, besides the techniques I've complained about, the pictures are crisp and the explanations are detailed. Cool Stuff. The Master Text, I've heard, is awesome, and I plan on buying Mr. Simco's new book on BJJ for beginners when it's released.
  24. I have no experience with Macahdo gis, but my personal preference in general is the gold weave, because it is still very sturdy but isn't as heavy...especially in the summer training in a double weave can make you feel like you're wearing a leaden suit!
