  1. When I train with the adult tkd class, I wear white. When I train in the junior tkd class, I wear red (Black Belt Club). My current jiu-jitsu gi is white, but I am getting a blue one with my birthday money
  2. I've been training for about three and a half years in tae kwon do...I'm currently a red belt, going for high red on the 17th. After that I have brown, high brown, then the black belt tests wil start about 6-8 months later. So, in all I will probably be training for 4 and a half years before I get my black belt. In our dojang, if you are under 16 when you are at high brown, you will, 99% of the time, get a "junior black belt". In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the other art I train, it usually takes anywhere from 6-12 years to earn black belt. As the Brazilians say, "There is no faking it on the mat", and rank isn't a measure of how much experience or time you've been training as much, it is mostly a testing of your grappling skill. KickChick, lighten up. She was just joking. I don't believe in "better black belts" - as a 15 year old girl, I can beat most of the middle aged women in my dojang. That's probably just because I'm closer to my physical prime. She didn't mean to be offensive. Also, don't think you're the only one who is busy...teens have a lot of things to do with school, clubs, sports. If it takes someone 10 years to earn a black belt at the same school someone earned theirs in 2 years, they have met the same requirements, no? Age ain't nothin but a #.
  3. No one ever mentioned a language called "American".
  4. Don't sit back too far though - you don't want to give him a chest on chest sweep or kimura oppurtunity.
  5. I'm going to see the Who with Robert Plant openiong for them...also going to the Stones.
  6. That's a good way of putting it, ckd. The black belt means little unless you realize what went into it and what must come out of it.
  7. Haha!...............................no Monkeygirl - If I was you I'd head down to the high school track on your free time and run a load - that's what I do when I know I will have to run far for a test or to try out for a team. Get back into sparring slowly, maybe you can get some buddies who are lower rank to train with you a little before you go back into fighting those your rank.
  8. Well, our tests take place over a series of Friday nights, maybe five or six, and then the Saturday after their last test. our school plans a demonstration of rall the students to perform in. The last performers are the black belt candidates (the ones who have made it far enough - these ones always get the belt). After they do a small demo, their parents are asked to come up and tie the belts. This year, a small girl named Ally who got her preliminary black belt read the essay she had had to write to our instructor. I think the dinner is odd because it would definitely let down those who were waiting for the belt and didn't get it - I'd rather do what our school is and drop people off along the way of the tests if they aren't up to par.
  9. You obviously can't be that well informed on the art if you can't even manage to spell it properly.
  10. How "into" a person's life should an instructor get, especially children? I am 14 and when I am going for a grading, I have to get one of my teachers at school to sign to say that I'm a respectful student - I think that's great, but most kids take it as a joke and get their gym teachers to sign it . Some parents come to me or one of the younger assistant instructors to talk to a child who has been hitting a sibling at home or otherwise being a bad kid and not following our school's standards. Some of my friends from other schools think this is rediculous. I think it is a good idea and makes kids realize that a black belt isn't just a cloth - you can be an academic black belt, corporate black belt, or black belt employee, too.
  11. Hey, I'm not monkeygirl but I also train in TKD! My instructor is a blue belt in BJJ as well as 5th deg in TKD, so as a part of our TKD training he would introduce really basic stuff, like upa and elbow escaps and a sweep or two, and then how to stand up...he wanted us always to end up standing again. A few months ago my instructor and some other blue belts from his academy decided to start up a beginner BJJ class at our TKD dojang once or twice a week - and it's really cool...the BJJ has added a whole new dimension to training. My instructor's instuctor, a brown belt under Royler Gracie, came and taught a class, too.
  12. I'm only a red belt in tae kwon do (just over three years training) and started BJJ three months ago - my training id going great! I still train just as extensively in TKD but also have made room in my schedule for 1-2 BJJ classes a week.
  13. That's some break, tiger! I liked some of blade's excercises. How old are you? Perhaps you could work out with a high school track's high jump squad.
  14. In the US there is a shortage of families who are willing to adopt children - this is probably because of great advances in fertilization and such, so what do you think about gay adoption? I have heard stories of gay men taking in 5 foster children with AIDS and then not being able to adopt those children. Look at Rosie O'Donnell....I believe she is a good person and a good mother, and I also do not believe that growing up with gay parents would necassarily turn you into a homosexual. If almost all gays come out of "straight" households, then how do we know what will become of the children of gayt households? Gay parents are very open with their children and encouyrage them to explore their sexuality more.
  15. What exactly is "cat stance"?
  16. Do you have a link to directions/applications? I think my family might be coming over to Hershey for a while in July, and I'd love to go!
  17. Thai fighting is like soccer in Thailand...also, the Brazalians are really into the pride they get from training with a certain instructor and so forth, it's sort of like their claim to martial arts fame and the Gracies, Machados, and other families are REALLY into keeping the integrity and reputation of their art and sport up.
  18. Hope to hear from you soon TKD
  19. What exactly are these exams you are taking?
  20. It's early in the morning and I was going through this forum...that scared the crap out of me!
  21. when you train. What company, color, and weave? Describe the gi. Was it expensive? Thanks a lot.
  22. Kyle, we don't follow the 10 gup system either...ours is White, High White (only if you're under 16) Yellow, High Yellow Orange, High Orange Blue, High Blue Green, High Green Red, High Red Brown, High Brown Junor Black (only if you're under 16) Black So If you are under 16, there are 16...otherwise 14. I think the belt system is good for people who are taking TKD as a first martial art, and we aren't always on a particular schedule, and if you have any prior knowledge in a striking style you'll probably move up quicker.
