i don't care about kiai anymore, it's a joke, if i focus correctly and put my body weight behind my strike there is sgort sound like "hah" this helps to increase power by dropping the weigh of upper body down, screeming kiai is just a waste of energy and a disturbance to proper breathing, i have seen people kiai in every step , or some realy screem the word "kiai",

we do all katas together to the point every body knows the kata then we divide in groups and do our katas , sensei allways is the one teach the new kata to a student and he choses the time when to start a new one for each student. average one kata every 2 months but kata nothing to do with belt in our school , actually only kids get new belts in our school and in last 11 months i been here i never seen a new belt given to any adult practitioner.

after 2 years you don't have a warranty and repair costs more than a new one, when camera turns off after some short seconds shows a over current relay activation, so most likely a small gear in the system jams don't waste money on repair, this week Offix max has a offer on SONY 4.1 mp and 10X(3digx3.5opt)zoom, for 179 they give you a 128mb SD card free and a BROTHER 3in 1 printer too, check it out.i saw it last night from 10/16 to 10/23 i think. this a good one to ,with a nice 10x optical zoom, http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/495759253?AID=10273773&PID=889052

good streching is a strong side of kyokushin, no wonder you can head hunt that fast. we strech before class, then we start with arm conditioning by each other arm low/high/low switch hands, then we condition shins by hitting shin on shin, then kata , or wazas, some times we put the gloves on and spar till somebody quit, some times put the judo gi on and wrestle for 5-10 min. weapons day is just weapon the whole class

look around in your dojo , they normally hang it somewhere on the wall, all the katas and kihon you need for a specific rank,

Self Defense Techniques anyone?
P.A.L replied to younwhagrl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Understanding the principle behind specific fighting techniques is fine and critical indeed when learning them because you will be able to generalize them to a greater number of fight situations you may encounter. However, more critical than understanding of principles needed in learning techniques effectively is mastering through repetitive practice a few basic techniques that have wide applicability in combat situations to the point of making them almost instinctive, automatic and second-nature without the need for conscious thought or problem-solving. Deliberate problem-solving or thinking and conscious specification of general principles of fighting while in the heat of a fight can take too much time and will unduly delay your effective attack-defense reaction. i am agree , what is principle? stealing balance? center line? using body mass? punch over? kick under? these are all good but when the real fight starts it's not like step in long punch. principles let you perform your technique in right way but they are not techniques they don't win a fight. if you wanna be a winner you got to be master in some limited number of techniques and counter techniques. you look at wrestling,boxing,judo... the bests allways have one or two winning techniques , after mastering a technique you creat the time/space for using it. you move, you set up a trap, you do whatever possible to create the right time for your technique.i love principles but at the end it is technique which gets the job done, if you master a techniques by repeating it , you are applying the principles no matter you realize it or not. -
i like the way wado-ryu does the blocking, how you guys incorprate the jujitsu part into karate ranking system?

picking kusanku for primary round is two risky , if this is a tournoment under world karate federation be aware of mandatory kata choice for first round. pick up your lead person from now and also left and right wing and don't change it anymore, you need a forth person as a backup too. team kata is mostly about timing , since you can't practice together all the time ,what most of the teams do is to measuring the time for different sections and follow the time frame while practicing alone.

that was a great test, thanks for sharing.

don't make a mistake in using fingers , i don't wanna go to detail since using fingers are realy dangrouse , a simple fight with knuckels may end up with some eggplants under eyes but with the fingers involve it could result in blinding someone.keep your fingers closed unless you have no other choice. fingers only attack the very soft tissues where conditioning doesn't make it stronger, we use them in two ways, first is block hit in a same time. block is closed fist or yang hand and hit is open with all 5 fingers throw directly to the face (Hi tsuru ken kata) second is after blocking and subdoing with a china-na technique you setup the oponent and throw the fingers to the neck area with closed fingers (there are different ways of making fingers together one is put all together like a cone) you throw it like a spear using you body weight like Matsumura Hakutsuru kata or Ru-shu ken kata. some techniques like spear hand in pinan sandan or godan are not realy practical while passai( not all the versions) shows more realestic finger strikes. in general i think keeping closed fist is a good way to go. as far as conditioning i think push up on fingers is the best, there are many routin in white crane for conditioning but push ups cover them all.

if katas are the same as tetsu shimabukuru then it is isshinryu, there are 6 of them on the net you can download plus some weapons katas performed by the master.

fighting is one thing and sparring is totally something else , in point sparing the attacker go like one,two , a fake and then the point taker. or one sudden punch like a back fist so if you are fast enough you can catch up and counter. in full contact or a fight there is no way to block all the punches you have to body change , punch are just comming you block the first the second one land right in your face. so keep you wedge and hands up, if you are defending as soon as feel the punch, throw yours and move. just move ,any direction is good just move , and when you move keep your hand up , NEVER drop hands in punching range. in kicking range you can drop one hand , most of the kick you gotta take it by conditioning your shins and legs. keep sparring every time you learn something new specialy if you do full contact with gloves on.

do you mainly block with your front hand or back hand? -
I think everything is ok because the news said that Houston wasn't really hit hard, and friends told me it was just wind in the area.I guess if the hurricane didn't change it's path Houston would of been hit.I guess we don't have it as hard as Luisiana, good luck to you kicks,it sounds like hell on earth for you.As for returning the news said not to because of traffic, gas, food, and etc. Hopefully I'll be back monday ,but I'm still not going to H.C.C. . I hope they have classes at my dojo on monday though. The only good thing though is that it has been like an unplanned vacation here in San Antonio.I've been touring the town so far. Thanks everybody for your posts.By the way P.A.L. are you from Houston also?yes i live in Houston (I10 , close to memorial high school) and train at I45 north(CypresWood), they told me HCC will be closed till Wensday and you won't have a thanksgiving holyday.

what's the history of Anan and hakutsuru kata in shitoryu

Sensei is 5th dan ,there is a 2nd dan , there are some guys from different hoochi-mama ryus that sensei let them keep their black belts, funny thing is they allways show off their forms in the first class ,as soon as they see a high level shorinryu or white crane kata they never do their sloppy forms anymore.

1- elbows and knee techniques in thai boxing are not comparable to any karate style, they perfected the art of using them. what do we got in shotokan to offer ? heian yondan? Bassai dai? kusanku? 2- shotokan will be your worst choice(if you are above 4th kyu or so), your katas will be all mixed up.it's a step back if you move from Naihanchi to Tekie.

every thing is ok , your dojo should be fine ,most damages were on south east, i drove to our shop today only one roof pannel was gone, thanks God there is no rain. no gas either, my tank is half already
-
i think this is a best time for you to go into thaiboxing, learne their elbow and knee techniques and add it to your shorin ryu.

since you are good in spining it should be easy for you to improve in real fighting techniques like the ones we keep from Hohen Soken or others, in real Bo application force comes from body movement not just the hands , the principals of empty hand fighting like center line or keeping your wedge up is applicable to Bo as well. holding a bo in a weak angel leasds to disarming or damaging wrist. I really think with this talent you got with bo you should train with traditional bojutsu masters ,and stay away from flashy spins, you have the potential to become a bojutsu sensei.
