we practice the application of Naihanchi in 45' .

i was a 4th kyu under Sensei Craig in Houston, i also know sensei Howard High from kansas, a very nice man, showed me his Anan kata and answered my questions.

as Killer Miller said , you can sweep anybody with good timming, for me , i am not into sweeping someones leg when they attack me, that time i prefer to concentrate on my counters, i sweep when i attack in, to their front leg when there is no weight on it to the left or right the only problem is you have to take a step with sweeping foot in last second, in grappling you can even sweep the front leg toward the back leg, which is a beautifull throw, to avoid injury to big toe it is importany to have a correct contact angel, practicing with a judo-ka is a great help with sweeping.

I don't care but i can't focus if i know my grappling partner is homosexual, i don't even feel comfortable grappling with female partner for other reasons, i never have problem in karate class but in grappling you may injure your partner in a second.

there are two main lineage in okinawan weaponary first is Matayoshi and socond is Tira , there are also some minors like hohen soken kodudo fighting techniques, http://www.wonder-okinawa.jp/023/eng/005/002/index.html you may have seen some people keep the bo under armpit and some under forearm or other dofferences in katas.

i only konw two tomari katas , passai and Wankan. is jitte considered to be a important part on tomari-te?

I am not familiar with this kata, what is the generic name for it in shotokan?

it's not a traditional kata,but in a sense it is, since it's made up from some crane katas but there is no history behind it(if you care) , there could be many of them out there but the one i have seen is created by Mr. metz from saishu ryu karate-jitsu. means black crane ,compare to hakutsuru,

i was looking into some history of the games http://www.wtf.org/site/hall/winners.htm Korean only lost their championship twice once in 2000 world cup to Iran and Frace 1-IR 2-FR 3-KOR and once in last olympics to Taiwan( but remember each chosen country only had two players in olympic) 1-Tiwan 2-Korea 3-Iran it's amazing that they managed to keep the distance, there is even a big gap in number of medals with recent runers up like USA and IRAN. i guess it's just like Russians and wrestling in 70's and 80's.

if you become good in one style of karate then you won't have problem doing any technique from another style, but in kata some old habits may kick in during kata mostly stances and turns.

wellcome to the forum and shorinkan, i practice shorinkan and have heard your sensei name before, all good tough. your hight is perfect, actually it is easier for biger men to perform a technique, i hope you enjoy the style , we may meet in a camp/seminar someday.

i think in traditional martial art , if you lose a challenge you should give up the dojo to the challenger , in a traditional way a challenger should fight everyone in the dojo from lowest rank till they get to the master, even , if he wins all the fights by the time he challenges the sensei there is no energy left.

once professor Gary Lee challenged our school, i was not practicing with them back then, this is what i was told, he came in with his backpack, with all the books/patches/flages everything, and asked for a challenge or forfeitting and closeing the school so every body could join his new school. anyway sensei was not in since he had his day time job, so they called him and he accepted the challenge, professor stayed till sensei came in and said "let's go" Gary lee " you are not gonna put a Gi on?" -"No this is fine , let's get over it" Mr. Lee got a punch to his throat and got knocked out, he didn't ask for another challenge match and left. http://www.worldblackbelt.com/pages/Mar05.11_GaryLee.asp

i love the Uechi ryu sanchin , about tensho and sanchin effects besides breathing i think sanchin works on muscles whiile tensho works on tendons. tensho is very much like crane tendons exercises.

Its not a kiai if it comes from the throat, it should just be a noise, which totally empties your body of air. An good indication of a kiai from the throat is a pronounced constanant sound, or a change in sound (e.g. TTTTIIIIYYYAAAH, or HHHHIIIIIYYYYAAA!) Two favourites from my class. Also, do the new starters/low grades/kids at your class shout KIAI. I mean, imagine defending yourself against some yob screaming at the top of your voice "SHOUT OF SPIRIT" yes i know some of the kids in dojo realy screem "kiai" , i only kiai during the test and not much care about it anymore since my direct sensei also doesn't do it, if somebody kiai during spar i make sure to throw something to their solar pleux right then ,it's a good knockout. there is no kiai in crane katas as we do so half of the problem is solved and shorin ryu test is due 2-3 years from now.
