well, Hangetsu is not like Sanchin and Tensho, for sure not a before breakfast kata. but it's a solid kata, may be one of the oldest katas out there ( of course not Hangetsu itself but the original version Seasan), Hangetu stance is a deep stance but if it becomes a little bit higher then we have a fighting Naihanchi stance in 45 degree.

once someone hypnotised a group of people and told them that they been hit by Chuck's round house kick, they all woke up with broken neck.

this is a 9 years old kid, what you guys expect from him, in our dojo some times i stop by kids class from 7-12 and i have seen every single of them crying after sparring, everything about them is sloppy but they have another 10 years ahead of them to their act together.

My final answer to the high kicking question
P.A.L replied to parkerlineage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
well, you can't prove a point by example , some times you can disprove but for sure you can't prove it. next time you may roundhouse kick to somebody's head and he kicks you under at the same time which happens a lot in Kyukoshin fights. -
Well, okay, but that doesn't exactly give me somebody with whom to practice the techniques. But thanks for the info and the recommendation! I got your exclamation point ,well my apology. here i gave 3-4 names you can start with, they should have students all over, i will ask from my friends too. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=26740 Sensi Mertz Sensei Lindsey Sensei Sandoval Sensei Chandler have you ever tried chinese white crane? it gives you more choices( Bai hi chuan,....) have a look here http://www.shaolinwhitecranekungfu.com/styles/white.asp Okinawan Karate & Kobudo (360) 698-2032 32 Ne Silver Pine Dr Bremerton, WA 98311

1-what exactly you mean by "Shotokan is a very linear style.....Goju ryu very circular" 2-what's a difference between deep stances and solid stances?
-
first i thought of Choki Motobu but later i switched to Chuck Norris i gotta taste his roundhouse kick, they say he can put you in orbit by his roundhouse kick.

I don't know about your level of karate, so forgive me if you already know this. Okinawan Hakutsuru is not a stand alone system it's allways been part of another system, in Shuri-te it is mostly part of Matsmura Setio Shorin Ryu , in Naha-te you can see it in Goju-ryu , some systems like Uechi ryu are full of crane techniques from beginig. what you see penland or Alexander doing is shuri-te with crane flavor, crane stylist is like a sniper , for being a good sniper you should be a good infantry soldier. crane techniques are mostly based on evading an attack or soft deflecting followd by a pin point strike to the eye, throat or a pressure point. kicks are low and kinda special front snap kick using big toe. and it moves like a wave, you hit high in Naihanchi then you hit low (or full) in shiko dachi, or the other way around. i think for time being you can practice on your finger push ups, and just mimic the katas you have.

Welcome to KF, thank you for being a VEGAN keep it up, what kind Okinwan style you practice? what is the lineage?
-
I undestand his reasons he don't wanna see somebody doing his katas in a tournoment. some of the katas he teaches are common katas among okinawan styles so you can allways find them, like Kunimora Hakutsuru, some of the katas been created by him, like kurutsuru but keep in mind that he is not a crane expert he is mostly a shito-ryu/shotokan stylist , so his crane katas are not extrordinary they are mostly created based on known crane techniques or katas, i think if you really wana study Okinawan crane system you should get in touch with Sandoval or Lindsey or their students.

now i am excited too, happy to see you in the forum, we got around 10 shorinkan karate-ka around here, i hope you stay long enough to get your shodan from Sensei Nakazato or Sensei Perry.
-
it's kunimora Hakutsuru, i know Sensei Mertz from his forum i never met him, he is young but not too young, for the other member who asked about crane applications, there are two study groups, one is with Mr. Sandoval and one under sensei Lindsey in Bastrop Texas, We are in Houston, if you pass by. the other guy name is Mr. Chandler he picks up katas from here and there and reselling them. i forgot to mention that sensei Mertz is the funder of Saishu ryu karate jutsu

Have the list for the school(open handed only): Kihon I-V Naihanchin I-III Seisan Pinan I-V Passai sho(Itsou), dai(Matsumura), and kopassai sho Kusanku sho and dai Chinto Gojushiho Jion Unshu Nakanishi no kata Tensho Tensho is a Goju-Ryu kata. Miyagi Sensei is responsible for adding it. Sensei also said that the open handed kata have expanded since this list, but this is the "official" list that I was given, the things about ten years old. i looked up your lineage, it's like this Chibana->Miyahira->Miyagi-> i guess here is your sensei i am familiar with all of these katas not including kopassai sho and Nakanishi no kata(bo kata?) , i never heard of them before, looking forward to see sensei Miyagi's kusanku,

list of your katas really confused me, i couldn't figure it out what style you practice, do you open your Seisan kata with 3 steps and closed fist?do you have a compelete list of your school's katas? I practice Kobayashi Shorin Ryu. All of the kata that I know of is as follows: Empty Handed: Kihon Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan Naifanchi Shodan, Nidan, Sandan Pinan Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan Itsou no Passai Matsumura no Passai Kusanku Sho Kusanku Dai Tensho Bo: Gyosho Sai: Ichi no sai I'll post a more complete list after I go back to class And as seisan goes, yes, it starts as you suggested. I've posted a video clip as done by my class here. I have video of several other kata if anyone wants to see them, but they must let me know before I post them on the interenet. first i thought your style is a mixed of Shuri and Naha-te but , obviously your Seisan kata is a Shuri-te, although there sames to be a missing part toward the end( Seisan is so old that there are many different versions),what i don't understand is Tensho among all of these Shuri-te katas. thanks for the upload, if you got a chance let me see your Kihon #5,Matsunura Passai, Kusanku dai and Tensho.

the irony is that sensei Chibana was a re-griper.

Help with finding Katas
P.A.L replied to Heather Smyth's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
i understand what you mean by being bored, go back to the root, pickup one or two katas from okinawan karate and focus on finding all the sources about them, i give you two names , these are very good katas out of TKD lineage, 1- Anan look for the original version of Ryuei-ryu school of karate http://www.wonder-okinawa.jp/023/eng/010/index.html 2- Sanseiru from Uechi ryu school of karate (last performer , down the page. not the blue jumping jack), http://www.uechi-ryu.com/videos/u_kata.html these two give you a taste of open hands/ hands up karate. i am not trying to pull you into another style , just look at them as art of karate masterpieces. my 2cents. -
I follow the same rule, as far as re-griping, I do it after each set of moves, like in pinan shodan , 3 opening moves to the left are together so i keep my fist, when i turn for the right side, i do regrip quickly.

Branching Away From TKD
P.A.L replied to Heather Smyth's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
about Judo 1- if you have near-sight problem( may be -3.0 or more) you need to be carefull about throws 2- if you have a back problem it may get wose 3- old time injuries in fingers may come back since you are female , you need to know good technique in judo or BJJ won't help a lot against pure force, if you don't wanna compite then Judo with all the possible injuries is not a good option, unless you wanna look at it as a art. BJJ is not bad, mostly damage to the elbow and knee but it's a great workout, price is higher too, i know a school in Houston that closed down just because of injuries. traditional Jujitsu is good and practical, Aikido is good but not practical in early years, -
