  1. take your bag with a T-shirt ans a loose pants , go to each school one day and ask for a free class, if they don't honor a free class just forget them, try as much as arts you can and see which one you like the most, one more thing, i personaly never sign long term contract no matter who the instructor is,
  2. 1- his shuto is too low 2- he did those 4 reverse punches slightly wrong. i didn't check the rest of the kata. this is a example of messing the techniques in order to doing it very fast.

    kata

the one with hammer fist is Pinan Nidan as Itosu named it, later in Japan they changed it to Heian Shodan since it was easer to start with. I have seen some shito ryu based dojos also swap the names between Pinan Shodan and Pinan Nidan.
  5. I knew chuck chandler got some of his katas from Mr. Lindsey but i didn't know about Geoge Alexander, if you look at Hakucho kata he does here, you can see it is almost identical to Kunimura Hakutsuru that Alexander has on DVD. what crane katas did you learne from Mr. Lindsey?
  6. wrong post
  7. most of white crane is about A.Evading the first strike B.Hitting eye or throat ( sometimes a pressure point) C.killing body in many cases the same blocking hand (front hand) does the strike too, and if back hand does the blocking then front hand fingers hit the eyes at the same time. here is Matayoshi sensei doing a crane(could be snak or Mantis)? kata and a Monkey form This is a nice form as well. Those low stances would absolutely KILL my knees. Just out of curiosity, in the original post, is that your sensie? No, I have trained with him( very nice guy) but he is not my direct sensei, he is my instructor's sensei in Okinawan white crane karate jutsu. He is a export in Okinawan weaponary and Okinawan white crane family styles, his base style is MAtsumura seito shorin ryu, he is a 8th dan and has a dojo around Austin.

could you tell us what happened that you switched to shotokan after 15 years of goju practicing
  9. i give him credit for being honest with you (either right or wrong) he could get your money and just ignore your son in his class.

    Goju Ryu

give me an example of hard and soft, I consider Tensho to be soft and Sanchin as hard although Tensho may looks hard to some people.
  11. some of the crane katas shows female moves, kakushi ( use of hidden weaponery or hidden punch) is one of them, also some of the moves that resembles a female carrying a baby. here is a example of hidden punch from tomari wanshu kata

    Wrist Grabs

i was without a dojo for a while ,this was like 2004, so i went to this dojo, http://www.kimsookarate.com/ (it 's a good dojo by the way just not my type) , i put my white belt on and jumped in, one day i was partnered up with a teenager and a black belt was teaching us some grab techniques, so he grabs my wrist and asks what i would do, i said "i am gonna poke your eyes with my other hand" he looked at me like i am mentally chalenged, he asked the teenager and he did the famous lock , the instructor looked at me and said " this is what you need to do" and i shouted "YESS SIRRRR". here is a good one, http://www.ehow.com/how_6259_defend-against-lapel.html here is another proof that i don't know anything about grabs,

    Seisan

this should be a Kyan version of seisan this is the first version i learned it from a student of shimabukuru in shobayashi ryu, Shohan , is this the way you do seisan? armanox, if you are intrested in this kata ,you may wanna find out when they changed the beginig stances to cat stance in your lineage. i divide the seisan into 3 cat. for begining of the kata 1- Naha-te they move in sanchin dachi 2-shuri-te lineage Hangetsu stance with different depth( from shotokan to wado ryu and ishin-ryu...) 3-shuri-te , squar stance turn to front stance after the block on the punch (this could be a tomari version like Kyan...) you guys do cat stance which is new to me but i saw one more KF member who said they use cat stance as well. anybody can help with some history lesson here?

    How Long

i only do katas at home, at night when i watch TV between commercials i do a kata or part of the kata mostly soft version of crane katas, before jumping to the bed i do Sanchin or my version of Tensho.
  20. in most cases you can grade up to two grade below yourself, so the minimum for promoting to shodan is Sandan, I read somewhere the Steven Segal's father in law promoted him quickly to sandan which enabled him to open a dojo in japan( from what i have seen of him , i guess he was well deserved)
  21. stick with shito ryu version
  22. in Ryuei ryu version , when you step from first shiko dachi to another shiko dachi facing west, there is circular hand motion like heft hand turns right hand and makes a joint lock then you side kick, in the pictures it looks like a double fist slow push down in shiko dachi but i am not familiar with this version so i am not sure what she is doing. ok , i wached the video again it is the same as the pictures, and totaly different from Ryuei ryu version, i think you should stick to the shito ryu version since there are more practitioner that you learn from, specially in Italy which allways has a strong kata team. Ryuei ryu is a small organization, i couldn't find even one dojo in whole Texas.

    Bowing in...

ask your instructor, the Japanise way of bowing in is a bit different from okinawan , in shorin ryu if you are the first student , when the class starts you first say "shoman ni rey" or the sensei may say this part, when he turns back toward the class you say "sensei ni rey" at the end of the class first you say "sensei ni rey" then he/she turns back for "shoman ni rey".
  24. i allways have a white belt in my bag, i go right to the end of the line. if you go there regularly that's something else.
  25. good idea, one of my sensei ripped his belt and he was so mad,
