  1. that was my point, you making Muscle memory during the basics which causes the problem during combat technique, you can try this, just ask your student to react to a long punch by moveing to the side middle block and reverse punch to the rib area, i bet more than %90 chamber their reverse hand on their side before reverse punch which i call school kids karate.
  2. from fighting point of view 1-waste 2-good 3-no zenkutsud achi 4-
  3. that's what i though , he got to the final against Graice and realy fough well but caugth in a arm bar at the end.
  4. I started this thread since i have seen it in several dojos and styles that during the practice of fighting techniques (let's say waza) most of people have the tendency of bringing their reaction hand to their belt and punch or block from there, IMO a block gets it's speed/power from hara not from reaction hand, reaction hand should stay up all the time to pick up the second punch/move...... let's talk about this.
  5. we do the same , i don't care the heel is up or down, timming is more important , i think in the last moment the heel will sit on the ground naturally. in point karate most likely the heel is up since you wanna reach from a farther distance to the target.
  6. sorry i didn't mean Miyagi Version, i was thinking more of some Shuri Sanchins(or it's better to say Chinese oriented sanchin on okinawa) like Shorinji Sanchin and little bit of Tsuru Sanchin,
  7. this is a good practics for forarm tendons both hand in palm hand strike position, open all the fingers and pull back all of them toward elbow make a 90 degree angle between fingers and forearm , stay for 10 sec , then relax and repeat, strong tendons is a key for throwing your hand effectively( yang hand, crane fingers, tiger claw,...)
  8. Sorry but not before : Huchi Mama Do
  9. i've seen in some dojos people really scream "Kiai"
  10. just wait and learn, kyoshi Lindsey allways says it takes 10 years to learn how to relax.
  11. it's hard to choose one but if i have to then i go with one of the Sanchin katas.
  12. try this make knif hand block and ask somebody to push you back by pushing the edge of you knif hand block now A: all fingers open(don't stick them together) and reverse hand palm down B: same as first one ,just reverse hand palm up C: same as A just bend the thumbs in (both hands) D: same as B with bent thumbs. in which kamae you feel stronger?
  13. Dillman is a green belt in karate.
  14. it's the first japanies karate style, a mixture of jujutsu and shuri-te , katas are close to Mabuni version, i think anything you learn can help you on the screen, i was a 4th kyu under darrel carig when i quit. i didn't like the deep japanies stances and moved back to shorin ryu.
  15. any place that a nerve pass over a bone is come close to the surface is a pressure point or it could be a place that several nerves passing over each others. when you hit them hard you are disturbing the Qi flow(electical signals through nerves) to that area. these pressure points are mostly same as acupuncture points. you can't hit them effectively in a fight unless you are a master in pressure point fighting, it works when somebody standing there but in a fight you don't have time for that, some of them are easy to find on the face, on the body you should have some refrence point like elbow or solar pleux then generate a virtual mesh on the body in 4"-5" intervals.
  16. first of all black belt certificate from any school or anywhere else has no MA value, as it was posted here before ,it is in your heart and mind not on your Gi. i think anyone in MA can train someone else up to two level below him/her. like a sandan can give out shodan, but i am not sure.
  17. shotokanwarrior, you doing ok, i bet you if you test in any dojo you can pass their test, your situation is different from somebody who knows nothing and buy a series of videos like "karate for idiots", in fact you practice in a private class, as long as there is somebody who can correct your katas and somebody who can help you with wazas ,you are good to go, in a dojo you mimic your sensei first then he also corrects you but at home you can try to mimic but nobody is there to correct you this the down part, Good luck man.
  18. actually most of KO happens by Roundhouse kicks, i don't fully chamber like i do in front kick or side kick, if you gonna hit the thigh with shin then chambering is not gonna do it, for head kicks chambering is natural. round house is more effective when you fake the first kick toward middle section of body then the real kick goes for the head/neck , doing roundhouse kick is like a art,it could be very effective if you become familiar with the details of it, in my style We don't use it that much for head ,mostly for thigh/hip level and we use our shin/knee.
  19. jarrettmeyer, very good, keep it up. Kata is just one way of practicing a martial art, systems without kata has to use names or numbers for techniques, then they practice them again and again, systems with forms normaly don't do this they teach basic techniques and use forms for mastery of more complicated techniques. there is no way someone tell this one is better than the other one. for those of you who think UFC or pride(MMA) is the end of MA, i have to tell you ,they are good where there are some rules but there is no rule when your life is in danger, here is the place where real MA comes in, real karate is not about body shot or KO , it's about puting opponents eyes in their hand in a second and kata has been a big part of it.
  20. it was about 18" inside the concerete and we put two "L" bracket around it right on the surface but with that depth it has to be backed by a metal support half way. I put duct tape over the rope on mine,
  21. here is a old formula for stopping it 2 part Vaseline 1 part Antibacterial Saop 1 part cat food mix them good and eat an hour perior to the event, keep some tissues since you may need it.
  22. 34 and counting
  23. i remember one time we made one in my sensei's back yard, the post was a 2x4 but 2 days later he called me a said he broke the post right where it comes out of floor, so don't forget to back it up by a metal "C" or "T" profile half way.
