  1. thanks for the info JerryLove.
  2. hmmmm... Grapplers look to beat up strikers? Not even going to comment on that. I smell trolling going on here. Actually you really don't know of average joe. You gut lucky with some guys who didn't know or wasn't as good as you were in the fight at the time. I met quite a bit of people who did a little bit of wrestling or boxing, or other stuff that seemed like the average joe to me. -Jeff
  3. Curious how many TMA guys cross train on here? I started out in Shaolin Kempo went dabbled in some Ed Parker Kenpo did some kick boxing that was offered at my gym. Did some BJJ at my gym then also Haktusuru (White Crane) with instructor friend of mine (not associated with the school I go to) As well as switched BJJ instructors to one that was more trained. Who else cross trains on here who are TMA guys? -Jeff
  4. Nope this is the right thread. The guy who mad teh first post said it. kle1n thats his screen name talking about how his gym is so condtiioned and any one in his gym can take a kick from MT guy. Most be nice living in a fantasy world -Jeff
  5. maybe I hit the wrong thread. Let me go back and check.
  6. right on coudo then your doing well .-Jeff
  7. actually better post Jerrylove is to find out what the posters defintion of Ki is and to give him a physical example so you can see what he means. As in the book essence of White Crane By Dr. Jwing ming Jing (sp?) he talked about diffrent Jin and diffrent ki. and how its expressed so someones defintion can be diffrent then yours. But for some reason we all call it ki even though others might not think of it same thing. -Jeff
  8. You can do both. Need a bag or something you can hit to test the theory thats in the book but eventually need a partner to apply them more effectively. same with grappling You can do all the solo drills and flexiblity trianing you want but you will only get so far but you need a partner. But if you already train at a gym or school books are excellent for reminders or giving off ideas or reieforcement training maybe the wording of that author helps make a move click in for you that your instructer previously showed you but for some reason you didn't quite comprehend or grasp what he was saying. but how the author worded it in the book. It clicked for you. -Jeff
  9. Martial_girl to much learning and overloaded the brain with info kind of fryed it for you huh? I have had the same sort of experience but not with boots lol! Thanks saifights. I dork I knew that tekki was same as naihanchi. Again another brain fart on my part. -Jeff
  10. So true. Better yet go to mma.tv to the Underground or even better to the Otherground. I hear a song coming on. Trolling, trolling, trolling, raw hide!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. I am not far off. I use general statment. I know there are instructors that focus on more Self Defense applicationa nd how to make the moves work by applying them in a controled sparring application. But most of the time no! In gernal sport has deluted the arts but in other ways made the practioner better. For example TKD got a huge bad rep because of the point sparring which instructors put alot of emphasis on to which other people later on going through the ranks when they became instructors well lets say alot of power was taken out and they focused more on speed. but with out the body weight speed don't mean that much you have to have both for power. Same with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gracie's been having the problem of every thing going to sport I been hearing stories of Helio gracie asking his sons if they teach self defense any more and trying to push that out more. -Jeff
  12. Not really. You hit the bag to develop power. I also believe in air drills but I prefer more of boxing type training. I see people spend more emphasis on the stance drills and other such things. Stuff that isn't really needed to make you a better fighter Quick notice the word quick. I do believe in air drills but not that the 75 percent of the time most the classes. I believe in air drills as far as shadow boxing. But I seen right now I am using example of karate. Were punch horse stance bring the other hand back the side while the punching hand goes out. You can start on more efficent stance drills, hand postions. I know you can use the that method for getting across certain concepts. But after student gets the idea he can change the movements and then implent the idea but I dont' see that to often they just refersese back to that type of training. least hard styles. I will use shotokan as an example. But if you talking fighting quickly there is better mothods. Owe and finally asnwer what you think i was getting at with the air drills. Taht is good the way you train. There should be balance between bag drills and air drills for proper form and working just speed as well as other ideas. As for bag hitting for a nice noise. Well depends you talking about partners holding pads or a heavy bag. Heavy bag is for power. Parner hoding pads is for focus drilling. Don't see how the noise is much involved in it. Unless your talking about hoding those nice centruy tkd clapper pads were they make a nice noise if you hit it. -Jeff
  13. Never die! lol! Actually I seen it both ways were the black belt was playing aroudn with teh student only after the black belt stopped moving or backed off and stay in control the student pops the black belt thinking yes I got them. I seen it other way to were there was not so good of a ma practioner (black belt) I hate using belt analogys belt don't mean sqaut. (see mods I didn't use sh*t I used squat I am working on the launagage thing. You can stop spamming my inbox with forum violoations now. lol!) Well after the lower ranker stopped, the black belt go in a shot. We weren't there to see how the match was so we can't say either way. -Jeff
  14. I have trained in mulitple attacker concepts.
  15. So true Treebranch few didn't want to fight and tehy probably were or are good fighters. Others well they probably didn't want to fight becasue they new they couldn't. So the hid behind morality of Karate. How it should be only for self defense, or developing character or what not. -Jeff
  16. Yep sevenstar ko'ed the correct. Depends on the instructor. For example TKD. Some places focus on tradional tkd which okay. But they are locked into t here own frame work of there style. I met instructor who won't look really that much out side of her style. I saw how her students performed I wasn't impressed. There are other TKD that focus a bit more on self defense and do more heavy contact. And then there are places that just do point sparring and focus on tournment training. Same with Jiu-Jitsu or other grappling arts. Some that focus on both tournaments as far as just gi or no gi tournemnts. Others do just gi. Others just no gi. Others both no gi and gi and self defense. and MMA training. depends on what gym you go to and the instructors training emphasis and his/her skill level. -Jeff
  17. so true. I don't care about the stuff before the end of the fight. Bottom line was how the fight ended. It looked like crap. Yeah I saw alot of stuff on the Mcdojo.com site stevenstar. Do you post on MMA.tv? -Jeff
  18. Actually some pressure points around the face and neck area you can use in grappling. But sevenstar is right they aren't going to be fight finsishers. Just something to to get his thinking going bascially annoying as hell. Kind of used as a set up for more effective move. Same reason we throw on chokes to distract and set up arm bars from the mount postion in BJJ. Least thats my theory. But I also agree in general with Sevenstars post. You don't need a lot of techniques. Why practice alot of * and be only medicore in a few technqieus yet practice a few techniques and get good at them. I seen this alot wre people practice alot of *. But there skills are only mediocre. Both Sevenstar and me know for example I will use grappling of people wfho put us in armbars we can see them coming way before they even get to the side of are bodys to do the arm bar for example they have mount. You would think we can counter in time. But they practiced these technqiues over and over with a resiting partner and figured at the small details and how to make it WORK so you see it coming you try to stop it to know success becasue they counter your stuff and you end up armbarred. Same idea for some one practing few techniques. LIke Mauy thai guy said. They worked there moves and the details and stratgeys on sets ups, using feints, and combinations, foot work and body movement, cutting down on there telegraphed movement and learning to use there body more to generate more power plus learning to be relaxed and be faster. They only focus on few moves were they can place them on the body and cause damage. but those practice a lot of tehcnaqiues aren't very effective. Maybe some years down the road. But most of the time only the simple moves they learned are going to be the most effective for them. But they wasted all that time on doing multiple tehcnqiues and such that they can do only those simple moves at medium skill at best. -Jeff
  19. Wing chun talk. lol! I can understand half of it.
  20. You got to be trained in both grappling and striking to be well rounded. Would you do well on a street with just one style yeah probably. But then again there are alot of unknowns in that factor of street. To many variables. so bottom line is you got to be well rounded as possible. Oh and if you get a skilled grappler he learns to control those arms well. were its difficult to get that knife out in the first place. but again there are variables. If you like striking great do it. Don't want to grapple thats fine. You don't think you need to grapple? think again. I feel bad if your put in that situatioin hopefully not. Me I am grappler I also learned karate actually first and little bit of kick boxing. But I enjoy grappling that is were I like to be. But I know its important so I want to learn to box well and kick box also. More you leave your self in one dimisenion the rest is weak. Royce Gracie proved that in the UFC. It isn't just the UFC look at Gracie's in action same on there. But still more fighters are learning other stuff. So hopefully you never actually get in a fight with some one who does know both sides. You may be a better striker but if you can't defend take downs. He will dominate you in the fight. Just my opinion. -Jeff
  21. How do you suppose we have diffrent ideas on whatw is fighting. I am talking about also learning to fight from all ranges.
  22. You can go to China to the Shaolin Temple nad purchase for around $5 bucks a certificate that says you are allowed to teach the art of Shaolin Gong/Kung fu. I thought that was funny. -Jeff
  23. I've read that before. Guy is still a tard. You can throw down * on the net any time still don't mean you will fight. I wasn't impressed with boztepe when he faught william cheung which was a joke. -Jeff
  24. Steve Farnworth student under "Wellington "Megaton" Diez heard of him? You have your points drunken monkey. I started my training inentialy in Kempo. Well technically in TKD. But at age 11 years old and only doing that art for a year and pretty much forgetting it after that I don't really count it. I also done in my profile hakutsuru. What not mentioned some kick boxing and some Ed parker kenpo. Then BJJ. You have a point. For example if you ever watch Pridefc that is a japense mma event. Guy named Vandereli Silva is outstanding striker. if he goes against grapplers he uses the sprawl and what he knows to defend the submissions and get away and back on his feet were he prefers to do his damage. I don't think bjj is the end all be all of fighting neither do I think mma shows aspects of street fighting because of the rules. You will see grapplers run into that knee or into something. Bjj isn't famous for its take downs alot of its practioners go to Judo for (gi) take downs and or wrestling. Prime examples are pride video's of Royler Gracie running several times reaching to take sak down only to get clocked. Also Renzo did it to a very good wreslter and fighter named Dan Henderson. He shot into hiim but he was to far back and you can see it a mile a way. Dan sprawled same time throwing a short but sharp uppercut knocking Renzo Gracie out cold. His stragey renzo tried to go to the ground several tims in the fight they did go to the ground but soon as they were there Dan would stand up out of Renzo guard each time and back away to strike agai. Good stragey! any way I enjoys these conversatitons. -Jeff
