well i have studied many martial arts through out the years (so many i can't fit them all in my profile) yet one style always seemed to be avoiding me that was ninjutsu, yet when i came to japan i was able to start studying ninpo budo taijutsu, the way of the ninja, i also wanted to study shaolin, yet also in japan i got to study shorinji kenpo which is the japanese variation of shaolin kung fu, so now i would like to learn.....hmmmmm i would like to learn some of the higher aspects of aikido, i learned alot of the lower and mid level skills but i would like to get to the higher level things like the ki projection....i'm not even sure if it is real yet that is what i would like to do, i love the idea of using their momentum against them, i have some skill in this like i said before but i would like to improve on this

Bag work anyone?
granmasterchen replied to Bart the Lover's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i train on the bag and also on other surfaces and materials, it has a strong impact on my power, i train alot i do bare hand to build up my knuckles, the harder the target that you hit the stronger the impact is on your arm, with the impact you increase the muscle tone, i train on the hard bags, wooden punching pads wrapped with leather, trees wrapped with rope, sand bags, sand, ballbearings, lead shot, wooden boards, concrete and steel, i hit all these through out the day to make my knuckles stronger and to improve my breaking power, also after doing this for years my knuckles are alot more powerful and do not get damaged as easily, i can give several full force punches to steel beams with out injuring myself now, i have been working on styles that are called iron palm -
Are there really ninjas?
granmasterchen replied to Tamojin's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
good author there campiatt, well i can tell you this, the way of the ninja has changed since feudal japan, where i live, misawa japan, there is a style called ninpo budo taijutsu, it is a 900 yr style of the classic ninja, yet it has been modified for our day and age, alot of the training is the same, yet now they have incorporated guns into their trainings for self defense and how to properly use all their weapons to kill and kill quickly, the 34thgrandmaster of ninjutsu, known as the only true living ninja, recognized by the emperor and government of japan, Masaaki Hatsumi, is here in tokyo, my instructor in this style is robert fraser, 10th degree, or a judan, and a shihan, senior member instrutor is here at the base, steven hayes, is the first american to bring ninjutsu to the US, and trained with my instructor. Hope that helps some. -
make sure that you got your technique down but yes, of course, train at home, the more you train the better you will be

i spar depending on the level of the individual, if it is a person with little skill i will work with them to build their skills up whether it be child, woman, man or elderly, if they are good i will go a little harder regardless of sex, and if they are on the same level as myself i will go all out, whether it is a 2 yr old super kid with some mutant or magic powers, man, woman, elderly 97 yr old woman with a walker, or even handicapped, i have met individuals in wheelchairs that are amazing, and others with no arms that could kick like any one i have ever seen on tv, people need to see , that age, sex, race or what ever don't matter is the individual. plain and simple.

HELP!! HELP!!
granmasterchen replied to quigley_321's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
how old are you quigley? you may want to wait awhile to cross train so that you have a good understanding first so that you don't get confused, my advise is to check out each school and see what they have to offer. For your size i think that judo may suit you, also consider karate, and taekwondo for the striking aspects, the kungfus will give some interesting "softer" styles too, also once you make a selection, see if there are students in the class that will train with you, some of these individuals may have cross trained in their careers too and may be able to show some skills and techs from other styles, this will help you improve yourself, it is good to know a little bit of everything so that you can defend yourself agains all types of situations, yet if you take too much at once you will confuse your self with katas and forms, so the best bet would to be pick one and look for some individuals to train with you that are willing to share some skills from other styles that they have learned. -
IMPORTANT STATISTIC 2
granmasterchen replied to Seanbomber's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i agree, everything you do effects you as a martial artist, and everything can help, just train hard at everything you do. -
i agree that there is a large physical and mental level of achievement, what g95 said and some more

what areas are you competeing in? sparring, weapons, kata, self defense, breaking, what?

well your instructor should know that you first develope your skill, then speed and finally power, because, as you said, you can have all the power in the world but if you can't connect and are too slow it doesn't do you any good unless you get lucky..... something that i like to do , and this may sound silly but give it a try.... take a little grocery bag....throw it in the air and start kicking it with different kicks, do not let it fall to the ground... this will let you work multiple kicks, accuracey, and speed, you will notice that you will be kicking the bag all over the place, and this will also build endurance b/c you will have to continue kicking over and over, fun little activity try it!

Curriculum and Handbook
granmasterchen replied to pvwingchun's topic in Instructors and School Owners
in my style it is something that is kept rather secretly and guarded only the advanced, black belts and senior members get their own copies, this forces the students to pay attention in class and remember and practice their skills at home. -
i have my students do self defenses, with lots of take downs, i figure the other person will learn which way that hurts them the least over time, get them comfortable that way by not giving them a choice, you will take them down, it is up to them to try and make it comfortable, i still do shoulder rolls and back rolls too, we just do drills on them we form up in lines and we take turns the first in each line goes down the floor and so on.... i love hard wood floors!

welcome, continue to train hard, forget the others in your class they are jealous of the skills that you have, if they were true martial artists they wouldn't whine, they would go home and train theirselves. If I was the instructor i would smack them around if i heard them laugh when ever we sparred, it is not right to laugh at a fellow student that trains hard when he is not as good as others, so of course the instructors will do well against you, this just shows their limited intelligence and grasp on true concepts of the martial arts, continue to train hard, don't compete against them, compete against yourself, in the end it is only you that matters, better yourself, they can't make you better only you can -
when i was training for championship tournies and other large events i would train around 10 hrs, yet i could only do this when i was not at school or working, when i had to go back to school or work i had tocut my training alot yet i still trained at least 4 hrs everyday, back in the day i was a machine, yet over time i lost the edge of being a machine, now i have to rely on my more modest training and experience.

at the lower levels i allow the students to make some mistakes as long as they know what they are doing, their form may be sloppy but we will work on that, once they enter the intermediate stage i am critical on stances, angles, skill, speed, and power, everything is analysed closely, only a few very small mistakes are allowed, if you forget a kata, then we will see you next testing, sorry, and advanced and black belt testings, everything and i mean every tiny thing must be perfect, and we look close, we don't want everyone and their cousin to earn a black belt with out proper dedication and skill. I test the same way that my instructors test, so i hope this helps you some.

i train in a martial arts room at our gym yet before that i trained in the aerobics room, and i train in full gi, i never get odd looks, i will get the people that stand there and watch and then they usually ask me if i can teach them, that may have something to do with the black belt, but i don't see there being a problem with training at a gym, yet if you have a yard like hobz said, that can be very relaxing and convenient....train where ever you can and where ever you are comfortable.....hope that helps ..

ummmmm kirves... .if i can but in between you two i will answer your question, ....i would be the jack, that way i could have alittle of everything and be comfortable, i may not be the best yet i can adapt and change the battle to a more favorable environment that my opponent is unfamiliar at, therefore i think that i would be a better fighter.....again sorry to interupt .....am i the only one that understands the point of this question???/
