Shorinryu Sensei- i've more or less come to respect you and am aware of the fact that in all probability just making TKD practicioners think to see the flaws in their system, and fill in the gaps themselves. i'm sure you're not trying to start a flame war, don't worry about it i don't think i said take the sport out of it, i believe i said take the fun out of it, though i'm to lazy to look back and make sure . i don't personally view TKD point sparring as "mock combat", but more as an aggressive game of tag. don't get me wrong, i'm not necissarily bashing it, it has it's place, but it's far more game than combat preparition. as to your next point, i'll use bond girls. i think izabella scorupco (natalya, goldeneye) is very pretty. i think barbara bach (XXX, the spy who loved me) is also very pretty. as well as maryam d'abo (the living daylights). but none of them look anything alike. i think F-16s are pretty. i think F-14s are pretty. i think F-117s are pretty. i think perfectly executed side kicks are pretty. i think contemporary wushu is pretty. do you see what i'm getting at? a well timed scenario like you explained with the groin kick is something i'd like to see. i'd also like to see someone jump in the air, spin around and do some crazy capoeira thing and nail him in the head. maybe it's just all of the "extreme" marketing thrown at my generation, but both of those are pretty cool. apples and oranges, cats and dogs, sunshine and rain, man and woman.

i always wondered where that came from

happy holidays, everyone! i was shooting for a new pair of kali sticks, and a new chord mallet set, cuz all of my mallets are breaking/becoming unravled/being stolen that should hold me over till my birthday roll around

well, if i had to guess, it would be because allowing punches to the head would take a lot of the sport out of it. it takes under a second to nail someone in the head with a lead hand punch, and, quite frankly, it's not a very fun game if it's just the guy with the fastest lead hand. i'm sure the average school trains with head shots, at least among the upper level belts, just not in competition. head kicks are a little more challenging, and can be very pretty, and take longer to execute, which is why i'd imagine they're allowed. these rules probably circulate among the instructors, which is why they seem so universal. like you alluded to before, you'll probably get plenty of people who will say "i don't do that at my dojang". olympic style TKD, at least from what i've seen, trains to win tournaments. and i personally think that's ok, as long as they don't say otherwise. groin kicks aren't allowed i'd imagine just because they're not very "honorable" (discounting what you already said), and you can't use them in tournaments, so what's the point? i think there are only two schools in my area that don't restrict groin kicks, though, so i don't think that's just a tae kwon do thing. just my guess.

mortal kombat

probably because there are enough loyal gamers around who will see it no matter how bad it is. and if it's a good movie, that will probably entice more people to buy the game. -
Do you think weapons training helps your unarmed skills?

deadly alliance was indeed pretty good, but i think it got old fairly quickly. i wasn't even done with all of the characters before it got a bit tedious. and the first movie was far from good, though i'll admit it was my favorite movie when it came out . still, compared to the second one, it was stellar. i don't have high hopes for MK3, but i'll probably end up seeing it anyway -

drunken monkey nailed it. not that i've messed around with that many weapons, i'm sure there's some utterly useless one around, but in the end, if you're having fun and no one's getting hurt, who cares? -

he's got you there, sano i grew up with it, and loved it. it was the first fighter i ever played, and it's always fun to pop it in and play through every now and then. the movies were terrible, though, and if i hear that stupid song one more time.... -

i can think of a half dozen off the top of my head that have nothing to do with either. -
what easier to learn from books- striking or grappling?
battousai16 replied to TJS's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i would say grappling, for the soul reason of it being easier to practice striking on your own than grappling. it's kind of irrelivant, however, since both have so many technicalities it'd be nearly impossible to learn either from a book. -
A cute short story. For general amusement.

i was playing in pep band, talking to the french horn player behind me, and i had my hand resting on the bleachers. about midway through conversation my hand feels wet. i look down and her spit is dripping out of her mouth piece -

heh heh, you'd love percussion; there's always a good contest of "who can get the loudest sound out of the timpani/gong", "who can knock the bass drum farthest away". mallets requires more finesse, but if you don't have it, that's really obnoxious too maybe that's why my music teacher dosen't like me so much... -
i'd imagine your instructor would give you the best answers.

yeah, a steamer is your only hope. i think i heard somewhere that you're supposed to lay your staff parallel to the ground in a non humid area, but i'm not sure.

The Last Samurai
battousai16 replied to battousai16's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
i disagree mr. love; although there were plenty of slow motion scenes, there weren't nearly enough to qualify. also, there weren't any doves, or a scene with two people holding swords to eachothers temples while conversing. either way, is that to say you did or didn't like the movie? or do you have a neutral stance? -
...whoa... i have no idea what you just said... i need to brush up on my computer skills... and yeah, the evidence was mighty convincing, but something about it still makes me roll my eyes...

it's the kenshin OVA. the prequel. -
ick... looks like a karate america clone. i dunno if y'all have much of 'em, but they're all over WI, and they have about the same thing going on. if that's the case, just ignore the schools existance. if anyone expresses interest, kindly tell them why you think it's a bad idea. check in about open sparring and kick 'em around for a bit, sway the students. it worked wonders against the karate america verona location
