  1. but i thought you didn't have any hair on your chest? at least, i ASSUME you're talking about zipping up a sweat shirt...
  2. generally the shoes are cut very low, below the ankle, and it dosen't hinder your kicking. i used to, but now i train on a mat, so i don't need to.
  3. i do hwa rang do. i've seen people break boards there, but in my time there i have yet to do it. i've never seen it in class time, always at a tournament as a way to raise money for a childrens hospital near by. we like to think of our style as a 2,000 year old martial art, but realistically, from what i've seen, i can't imagine it being more than 100-500, probably closer to the former than the latter. from the looks of it we essentially combined a whole bunch of styles into one art. it's like cross training with all of the work done for you we've done everything suggested, except for headbutts, i personally have never done one in class. i'm sure there in there somewhere (we have over 4,000 techniques, though realistically only about 4% of the students will ever see all of them). we train weapons, too, 108 to be exact. but again, the average student will only train in 3 (ssang jyel bang or nunchaku, chang bang or staff, and mok gum or sword). once you get to black sash, which takes a very long time, they start throwing more weapons at you like kali sticks, tonfa, spear, cane, etc. and a little stick that resembles a taiko drum stick, which is where i think it originates from. depending on which instructor is there that night (and we have a lot of them), you'll get more or less of the korean terminology. i train under instructor ochalla at the world academy of hwa rang do madison west in madison, WI. if any hwa rang do students see this and wanna' correct me, go ahead on, this is just what i've seen
  4. right on, mc. steve!
  5. in the words of oscar wilde, "Always forgive your enemies- nothing annoys them so much"
  6. no ones thrown out once upon a time in china? ouch...
  7. they're making a seven samurai videogame, only set in the future. anyone see that as blasphemous?
  8. i believe "blitzkrieg" is "lightning war", though it's been a long time since my german teacher has actually taught us anything. i'm a bit rusty
  9. sorry, i'd love to post a video on here so y'all could pick me apart, but no computer skills
  10. in regards to the head guard thing, the best i can give you is to just know that it's coming. if someone's tall enough so that that's a distinct advantage, i'd be ready for it and angle a lot. if they are going over your guard, that probably means they're exposing a full rib cage, which is just begging for a side kick or a reverse punch. a lot of this stuff is just stuff you pick up with time and experience.
  11. long story short, it's not any more effective, and crossing your legs is a good way to get pushed over, so it's generally not advised.
  12. ^what she said^, plus one more. i'd combine that with wolverineguy's "don't count on her coming back" spiel. hope for it, but my older sister put her life on hold for her ex boyfriend, and it was pretty miserable time for her (and for those she decided to take her grief out on, yeesh! ). and when it was decided that he wasn't coming back, she had to go through it all over again, because then it was in stone. but don't take my words to seriously. i'm only 17, and would be an idiot to even pretend that i was in a serious and mature relationship sorry to hear about that though; best of luck to you.
  13. i noticed the hip thing too. another thing you may want to try is to stick your hand out straight in front of you, and kick through it when you're doing those first 2 kicks. that way, you're sure youur kick is going through and you'll gain more flexibility in the hips. but i agree with sasori te, those are awfully advanced techniques for a beginner.
  14. never. i gotta say, century has a nack for putting out the ugliest uniforms my eyes have ever beheld, though. i'd rather just stick to solid colors, myself. still, to each his own.
  15. hey, no problem. i'd love to give you some videos of my style, but i really have no idea how to put them online. i have some tapes of my forms so i can see what i look like and where i need to improve, but... yeah, i'm not especially computer savvy. however, if you goto hwarangdo.com, there should be plenty of videos and the like.
  16. just a word of advice. on that jump spin kick at the end of that hawk thing, be sure you're bringing your shoulders all the way around, you'll get a better rotation that way. it looks like your arc of power is at it's peak a little far to the left. it was good, though
  17. who said it was live...? if you meant why did i use a steel one, because i needed the sheath.
  18. it was reverse bladed. they're not very good, it was more of a stage prop, really. i was just stupid and didn't look.
  19. "If it weren't for martial arts films, how many of us would be practicing in the first place?" bingo, though i don't think anybody will be putting the ninja turtles or the power rangers as their favorite martial artists...
  20. ach, it's alright, i eventually got used to it. my teachers don't much like me, i'm a bit of a smart off
  21. oh god, i remember 4th grade; that sucked! whatever you do, don't call your students a miserable failure who'll never accomplish anything. that crushed my spirits for quite some time
  22. that, and the pitiful acting, the abysmal scripts...
