  1. True.
  2. I dont like sparring with big gloves because their clubersome and its hard to perform hand techniques correctly, I find them really restricting. However they are good for crudely blocking straight punches to the face cuz their so big! My favorite mit for light sparring is the Wuko mitt, cuz u can use any hand techniques effectively and there really light.
  3. What would u say the perfect build for a martial artist is? I suppose if u are to muscular then u lose speed, it depends on the style I suppose.
  4. So it looks like everyones in shape so far, and not one over weight. I was going to have obese on the poll but then I thought that there arent many obese martial artist around these days !
  5. Another thing, if someone grabs ur legs, u've probably got under a second to react, so if its never happend before or u dont train it, then it could turn bad quickly.
  6. "Counter leg grabbing"- I know it sounds crude but i couldnt put it another way, I mean practicing techniques to escape holds to the leg, u see in my dojo we dont practice it, or I havent seen it yet.
  7. What I wonder though is why boxers rarely use linear punches, and they never use reverse punches, not proper ones anyway. They usually use a jab, like a snap punch, but its not really there to make damage. I suppose its to do with getting round a boxers guard. People are saying that the reverse has more power, but why is it that in boxing, the hook is always the knockout punch, the one that does the damage?
  8. Soz, I meant hook, stupid me!
  9. I'm 5'10'' and weight 141pounds (64kilos), I'd say I was athletically built.
  10. Just wondering what build u guys/gals are. Also how tall are u, and how much do u weight. I know its a strange question but I'm interested in what the martial arts community is like in general. p.s Plz dont lie, tell the truth !
  11. No its not like that, u pay for ur licence and membership anually which is £38 ($54) and then u either pay as u go, or u can pay monthly for one lesson a week or two. anyway i'll give it a few weeks and then see what happens. Another thing, I keep seeing ppl doin loads of cross-training on the forum, some do like 4 or 5 arts, whats the deal with this, are these ppl experienced black belts in their arts and finding new skils.
  12. Although u will need to be proficient in speaking Japanese, u'll probably find that alot of japanese can speak English, Japanese tourism is booming and I would imagine that their is alot of help for non-japanese.
  13. All I can say is go for it, Japan's a beautiful country and a great place to learn from the best, good luck.
  14. Well, I went to the a lesson yesterday to check it out, firstly its all in chinese which is confusing, and their are little subtles likes the bowing is different and the guard is very different (unpractical in my opinion) and some other little things. But some things were the same like the side kick, roundhouse, stuff like that. One annoying thing was the snap punch, u see in kung fu u snap punch with ur fist pointing vertical instead of horizontal, i found that all the power was lost. But I enjoyed the sparring, which was practically the same, and I tried to mix both arts together. There is one really good thing about this club, theres loads of tournements and lots of squad training, and I would like to compete. I dont know what to do, its the subtle differences between the two that confuses them, if they were completely different then that would be fine, becuase its easier to seperate them...mmm i dont know, i'll give it a few more lessons see how it go's, u see if there was a judo or ju jitsu club near me then i'd join it, but for some reason theres only striking arts. I really want to do a grappling art. The ppl at the Lau Gar club were really helpful and friendly, I dont want to go for a few weeks then quit after signing membership and all that. HELP.
  15. Are there many knife defences in throwing/grappling arts, ie. ju jitsu. In the style of Karate I do there are loads.
  16. The original ROCKY SONG and THE EYE OF THE TIGER.
  17. What about ROCKY against THE RUSSIAN GUY, der der deeer, der der derr!!!
  18. Balls shrinking, man boobs .....I dont think steroids are the one for me
  19. Is there anyone here who does counter-leg grabbing in their dojo? becuase Its a nightmare for any martial artist especially if ur not prepared for it. I know someone made the comment about a roundhouse couldnt be grabbed, but I think this depends on the size of the person ur kicking, if the guys strong enough, then a badly performed kick may prove nasty.
  20. Plz will ppl stop saying "but i wouldnt get into that situation" blah blah blah, were discussing if it wud happen and obviously it has happened to some ppl.
  21. Roundhouse is like a right hook, reverse is a straight line linear punch.
