  1. Im sure that if i was in a style like that I would leave.
  2. Is it not true that there are gifted people who excell in their martial art? But I say this, They would excell in any art that they did just for the fact that, it is the way they are as individuals. I have seen black belts worth nothing and I have seen some of the same art that are exellent. There are 300 ways to break an arm, the individual will determin what technique to use.
  3. I agree that a school is a major impact on how a person is trained, Maybe they want to be good in competition but as for myself I select school designed for street.
  4. I heard that if your watching tv. try and punch everytime the screen changes.
  5. that is just your opinion not a fact. just like I have an opinion. style does not matter. you can have 3 styles boxing beats karate. but karate beats kung fu, but kung fu beats boxing......so which style mattered????? NONE. each person had a good and bad day.
  6. I do train with a boxer and a good one. He is now a 3rd dan. I do shotokan and I do not train for competition so i do not wear gloves unless we are boxing. We also break boards and bricks and train bare knuckle. Depends on how you train. yea a boxer might beat me in the street but nothing is for free we will both be hurt. Karate does have more techniques than boxing, it even has weapons. IM not bashing boxing because It is a tool that I feel you need, but to say it is better than karate is foolish. There are not a lot of karate guys I would put up against Tyson But there are a few, even a boxer will have trouble with him. By the way fancy kicks are for the movies, some boxers are easy to kick in the knees and thighs.
  7. AS far as im concerned unless you look at your art like it is a cult and it is written law, we all have free will and you can still think outside the box for your self, you dont need an art to teach you that, some things you can do on your own. But if you want to hold sensei's hand and be a robot that is fine with me, but like you said some arts do teach outside the box but you can truly do it on your own.
  8. Boxing is done in a ring with rules, with time limits , with a ref. ON the street boxers almost always break their hands from hitting because they are not trained and conditioned to punch with out a wrap and gloves. If you believe that karate stances are static and they punch from the hip then you do not know what you are talking about. If done right boxing will give you a good stand up game, ( I train it myself with upperbelts). and bashing a martial art because you saw some tkd, or karate joe loose. does not mean the art is bad.
  9. How is that not 100% true? If you train for survival on the streets and have natural fighting ability, why would style matter? I see it this way, I do not care what a person is going to do to me, all I know is that what I am going to do is much worse, either we are both going to be hurt or just the other guy , besause I was taught nothing is for free.
  10. Will anyone ever learn that it is not the style but the individual, and how they train and god given tallent.
  11. You are right but you need a firm foundation in the technical side before you can expand on it. The basics are what I have mentiond above. then liberate yourself.... on guard is derived from more than wing chun. for example his brother was into fencing. he got some footwork and what do you know they also have power side forward.
  12. have you read any of his books? Clearly in his own words he shows and describes the on guard position. You dont just do whatever you want, throw some techniques together and call it JKD. Hey I may be wrong go ask Dan Inosanto yourself.
  13. this was taken from sifu Lamar M. DavisII In order for it to be really JKD, the following elements have to be there. 1 power side forward-correct bai jong 2 econimical foot work. 3 verticle fist punching structure. 4 centerline preservation 5 longest weapon to nearest target 6 simultaneous defense and attack 7 stop hits and stop kicks 8 alive structure 9 no passive movements 10 bruce lee's 5 ways of atack 11 energy/sensitivity training 12 contact sparring......................and a few more MY point is... yes powerside foreward or its not JKD and that means a right lead for most people.
  14. if your goal is to only fight in the ring and train for it then yes you are taking the essence of the art away.
  15. taking things out water it down. your no longer learning wing chun as an art.
  16. I know cross training is helpful, but is there such a thing as a complete art that will teach you all ranges of combat and focus on self defense and weapons?
  17. If you change it for the ring I feel that you must dilute it or water is down like most arts have done for it to work. This is not what it was designed for. One thing you will have to change is the stance.
  18. Sorry but im off topic here. TJS does krav maga have rank or belts, what do you wear in class?
  19. UFC is a fight, both guys squared off and ready and it could last a while. Self defense is a totally different ball game. A mugger will not wait for big john , to get it on.
  20. You might have trouble with jkd fighters. they use there power side forward and most cases it is right foot forward.
  21. "ARE YOU READY?" "ARE YOU READY?" "LETS GET IT ON!" Fights dont start like that. They should not last but a few seconds. IF they do you were both ready to begin with.
  22. What was the original purpose of a kata? Did the founder develope it because it was a secret way to pratice because learning to fight was banned?
  23. ultra high frequency..
  24. You can be a gung fu anything, it is not just for martial arts. A good chef can be a gung fu man. As for the question you will learn more from a good teacher.
