  1. Anyone here in to the art of aikido, if so what are your thoughts of it in a real fight?
  2. I thought it was good, not brawling at all there were techniques, straight punches, hooks, low level kicks, knees, headbut, ground work. that is what a fight looks like.
  3. He saw Karate demos before he died and did not reconize what he saw, JKA changed everything. I would say they Japanised, Okinawa Te.
  4. I find it useful to block hard, use the elbow to the foot or leg when he kicks, block hard or strike the arm like the bicep and shoulder, after a few of these if you are efective, he will think twice about attacking. I know a boxer who will punch your arms until they are to sore to hold up any more. or take the hit, I always say it does not matter what he does to me because I have a job to do and it is going to be a lot worse for him.
  5. if I intentionally show you a bow and arrow and say this is how to shoot people but I keep my gun out of sight from you, thats hidding. Same thing to me.
  6. kata without bunki is just a dance
  7. what art would you use if you are mugged in a phone booth.
  8. I feel that in order to fully grasp the principal of a kata technique you must consider that okinawa karate for the most part came from chinese boxing. There were a lot of science behind a kata technique, they just did not throw it together. Pressure point attacks that may be hidden in kata were based on asian science, and when has chinese medicine and western medicine ever agreed?
  9. one thing that has opened my eyes a little is for example, The okinawins were for the most part short and I wonder what the first impression of this big tall American Gi must have been. Take the upper rising block, we are taught it is to block an attack to the face, but in some kata we do this block moving foreward which can indicate a slightly shorter person doing an upward forearm strike to the throat.
  10. There are a lot of things hidden in kata. Do you really think that the Okinawins would greet the Japanese and Americans with open arm and show them their secrets? Especially after we dropped a couple of big bombs on japan. Yes they showed us Karate but did they show us everything? What if Iran, invaded us and we lost, would you show your new overloards your fighting arts? or just enough to please them?
  11. Do you think changing to a kung fu style would be hard for a karate guy?
  12. Thanks for clearing that up, it does look cool. What style do you think it is?
  13. The only problem I see is that the other guy just stands there, What I mean by this , is that in real life as the man enters to strike there will be a respose from the other guy, even if the first strike lands, the other guy may retreat quickly or just drop and attack the groin. It looks good when no one is fighting back.
  14. When the pratice of martial arts were banned on Okinawa, they were able to convince the government that the kata were part of their lineage so it was ok to semi publicly perform kata, but most of the Karate was done at dark in the couryards of the masters. to practice karate and keep the tradition alive we do kata.
  15. It means that most of the martial arts adopted the belt system created by the founder of judo, before that there were no belts.
  16. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jaymac wrote: Kata is the basis of all martial arts. that depends on exactly what you refer to as a kata. wrestling, bjj, muay thai, capoeira, etc. have no kata. they practice technique repetitively, but that's not necessarily kata... I am sure that he means traditional martial arts. If the above sports were all of a sudden banned by the government, how would we hide the training? Maybe in a kata
  17. Basics are almost all the same.
  18. Funakoshi was against tourniments, in fact what he saw at them did not resemble shotokan at all. Shotokan is not a fighting art that goes against everything he believed, only used for self defense in life or death.
  19. Another thing to consider, from what I heard. the 5 heian kata were infact one kata and were broken down into 5 and simplified for teaching at school. What funakoshi learned is different from what now is.
  20. You are not learning a fighting skill thru karate kata, you are learning self defense techniques.
  21. Do you like how he teaches? If yes, What does a trophy have to do with his ability to pass on the Art to another person?
  22. I am 32 very out of shape and want to do BJJ, it scares me a little but anyway how long in it before you can compete?
  23. I heard one of his trainers say that he does not care if Chuck looks sloppy because he is going for a knockout with every punch.
