The backfist can also be used at a closer distance like when trapping.

Defending against the Straight Blast
shotokanwarrior replied to EarthElement's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
IF the straight blast is done correctly you are backpeddling and a fast pace. see the RAT system. -
While a grappler is positioning himself a true karate ka ( not a Mc black belt) will be bitting, eye gouge, groin, and small joints. Now before all you say these dont work consider that a true Karete ka is fighting for self presurvation. A bite = a chunk of bloody meat being ripped out of a leg or neck. groin= pulled , smashed, twisted, poped, shreaded. eyes= digging in and poping the eye out. these techniques are done instantly if the fight goes to the ground but I do believe that you fight how you train and if trained right Karate is a great self defense Art. I remember the first day in BJJ class, I was being owned by a blue belt, until I put on a wrist lock, I founf out they werent allowed but it worked and I was also very aware of all the targets available to me. So it the trainning. I am trained so that if I am being taken down and cound not avoid it, my fingers wrap around the head and the thumbs are going in the eyes.

I would like to add as a side note that the name Shoto-kan came about in 1935 when a national commitee of karate supporters funded the first Karate dojo to be built. Funikoshi had no idea that the commitee agreed on the name until he saw it above the door. The name shoto he used as a youth writting chinese poems. Also the belt ranking system that we all love was an idea of Kano's, if I remember right and was adopted by Karate as well as the Gi. Prior to the meeting with kano, Karate had no belt system or uniforms.

The best kick for self defense
shotokanwarrior replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I like the oblique kick as well as muay thai kicks, dont forget knees. -
Many times I have heard people talking about shotokan and the range of combat. For some reason it is believed that shotokan is a long to middle range art. I do agree that it is effective in these ranges but the close quarter range is overseen. If time is taken to look into Kata there are elbows, knees, headbuts etc. I just wonder why no one sees this or why it is not drilled into basics like the punches and kicks. Its all in the Kata.

When funakoshi went to japan, Kano ( judo founder ) was impressed and asked funikoshi to stay and teach, It is believed that some judo was also added to funikoshi's karate. This was all done well before it was ever named shotokan, but yes throwing and grappling techniques can be interpeted from the Katas.

2 year black belts?
shotokanwarrior replied to tkdman102088's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Why not? If you have the ability and learn what is reuired. I have seen some MMA people compete with under six months training. It depend on the individual and his desire. -
I have seen mma events where accidental groin shots have ended a match and a lot where it made a differance as well as the accidental eye poke. It is quie easy to dig into the eye socket if you are in the trapping or grappling range. If it does end the fight that is great but it is at least a small distraction to enter with knees, elbows, headbuts......etc for the non sport side of it.

Are there any really good ones on UFC? What about PRIDE? Gero I would say that no one is unless you are in a pure BJJ match. I personally feel that MMA has evolved into an art of its own, its more than just crosstraining now.

Defending against the Straight Blast
shotokanwarrior replied to EarthElement's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Very hard to defend against and if done by top jkd people like paul vunak or Dan inosanto. It is insane fast and the pressure is overwhelming. It is a transition phase between entering and finishing . Its not designed to just blast your opponent you first make an oppening by intercepting or destruction. I would say the blast should not be more than 3 hits then its to H.K.E -
If I was challenged in front of my class, I would ask the person to come back when class is over, then we go in when its empty, lock the doors and the winner walks back out..They never seem to come back after class.

I was wondering if the good people here at karateforums could help he in giving advice on a good self defense dvd or video that would be good for women. I have martial arts training but instead of me teaching a whole art or picking out techniques, I am looking for something all ready in place, that I can review and teach my wife.
