What do you think?
shotokanwarrior replied to Lil_ol_Ninja's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think some are to caught up in the Belt system, it did not exist before Kano came up with it for Judo. -
I agree that someone just starting needs someone to giude them thru basics. I have been involved in the martial arts since I was 17, now I am 32 and learning something from a video is not a problem but then again I have a solid foundation in basics which is the most overlooked and the most inportant part.

Do not sweat it, Karate is not about Belts.

Could you beat a street fighter?
shotokanwarrior replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
street fighter is what I train to beat, Tank on the street, I would use evey weapon I can find and there are a lot on the street -
I think that some assume that a fight in the street will start with both fighters in their stances and fists up and ready to go, like in a UFC type of event and in a mma fight you pretty know who you are fighting and know there are rules. I am pretty sure that a mma person can defend him self most of the time on the street. Now lets say there is a guy who knows a little bit of fighting and Frank shamrock is putting gas into his car, this less trained figher can come out of nowhere from behind, jump on shamrocks back and rear choke him before he knows what happened. That can happen to anyone, no matter what skills you have

Gear up for safety and spar with a resisting opponent in all ranges with all strikes and submissions.

Sure a Mcdojo will lose money if there are no studest. My friends shotokan class is $15 a month, the home study is $9.99 a month, its not books its videos. After 30 yrs, I am sure he can tell if my kata does not look right, I mean Itf and shotokan katas have basically all the same moves, just in different order. I agree that some one new who has never done martial arts will not learn properly. Like I said, I am not new, I have been involved for 14yrs, I am now 31...maybe 5 yrs of real dojo class time, the rest training with other artist without all the dojo policies.

Worst case? being caught and shown on video about to have my head sawed off with a knife by islamo fashist, pleading for my life.... how yould i avoid it? not being there and if I was, fight until they shoot me, I am not going out like that, they can cut it off after I am dead.

The final test is done via video tape or in person, the 4th dan I work out with was my shotokan instructur, I did learn the 5 heian katas from him, even though the katas in the home study cours are not required, the shotokan guys still want me to learn them and bring it into our trainig sessions, so I am getting graded two ways. I will not get a shotokan belt from them because its not a formal class but they will honor my bb from another system if they feel that I am up to par.

When Harvad and Yale will reconize my Doctrate degree I did at home Ill reconize you black belt at home. So what does it take to reconize someone being a black belt? being part of a big orginization like JKA? Or what about getting a black belt from a Mcdojo, is that legit? You know what you are right, it wont mean anything even if my abilities equil that of a good bb, besides Bruce Lee was not a black belt and he still Gets reconized.
