  1. First of all let me say that I am not a newbe to MA. I studied a year of kenpo in high school and later started shotokan where I achieved purple belt, I also did a short stint in bjj. This is what I do know, I work out once a week for 3 hours with 4 black belts ranging from 2nd to 4th dan, one is a golden gloves boxer. the work out consists of boxing drills, kickboxing drills about 40 min of various sparring going between using just hands and hands and feet, and escrima drills and sparring. Now I am also taking a home black belt couse on the side, there are katas but they are not required, mainly just self defense techniques, I do pratice on a live person also. With all this considered, what is your guys take on a home study course being used this way?
  2. any good ideas how wing chun can be used against a good boxer, one that has good combos, footwork and ducking/slipping? no kicking below the waist.
  3. I have 2 kids around that age, I do not find what is funny about it, especial knocking them out. Maybe if you put a bunch of midgets in there it might be a little better.
  4. Shotokan is a mixture of shorei-ryu and shorin-ryu, wich emphasizes on physical strength and light quick rapid motions to the front and back.
  5. break all his fingers one at a time
  6. I never fight in a deep rooted stance, we only do that for conditioning and kata. Remember shotokan is a mixture of shorei and shorin ryu styles, the former primarily strength and the latter is very quick and light with rapid motions.
  7. I just watched 2 tapes with Wally Jay on scjj, does anyone here study it? What is your insight, because it looks pretty good for self defense, compact , little energy and power used, has some good distractions and weak points of the body. I would like to check out a school here in Sacramento if anyone knows of one.
  8. Try running up and down hills at a high elevation.
  9. A man who has used a knife to cut a rope, gut a fish, poke ice and cleaned dirty toe nails has plenty of experiance to cut you.
  10. I would rather start with a throwing art, it works on the street and you will learn balance, in a multiple attack senerio throw an opponent into another. I do believe that you sould know what it feels like to be on the ground and how to escape, just like I always say , you need to know what it is like to be hit and whats its like on the ground.
  11. Anybody in Sacramento do Jeet Kune Do? I am looking to train or join a club.
  12. If you look at parkers stance, Bruce would have opened up with a lead shin/knee kick, Speed does not mean you will win.
  13. It is better to have a friend than an enemy. I would have walked up to the guys and asked them about their fight club, maybe attending or participating.
  14. something is really wrong. 3 yrs of kenpo, he should be able to handle himself. Kenpo guys are usually good.
  15. There is no honor in beating up a bunch of drunks, unless you are defending yourself from an attack then getting away. Calling the police is always an option, where I live it is ileagle to be drunk in public.
  16. Didnt you learn how to fall in karate?
  17. I have a problem with stories like this, I find it hard to believe and sicken that someone in a martial art ( style does not matter ) would even lower themself to a mere street thug by choosing to mock others on the street. It is not the karate way for one thing or even the kenpo way. If I was the teacher of these men they would be out of my school. Kenpo teaches to never fight to achieve your selfishness but to defend yourself, loved ones in self defense. As a side note MMA I have met are not even like this, they are cool guys and dont usually start conflicts.
  18. One thing about shotokan is the mastery of the basics, They are usually hard techniques. we trained to take hits, my instructor once said " do not worry about what your opponent is going to throw at you because what you do to him will we a lot worse" but this was also one shchool, who knows how others teach.
  19. I have seen many mma fighters loose to leg kicks, I think it was coleman who was bombarded with leg kicks then knocked out by a round kick to the head. maurice smith won over tank from leg kicks. But the street is different, I will use any weapon I can find, a car key to the eyes or ear, whatever. There are still many spots to target, you cant build a mussle over every inch of your body. Its also all about the situation, remember that basketball brawl? Its hard to wrestle and kick up in the stands? Just my 2 cents
  20. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Curious, which book was this in? Or are you being facetious? If you read my first post, I tell you what book, page number and by who.
  21. I would use an elbow against a bigger guy, but not as a first strike.
  22. If you like reading about JKD and Bruce, I recomend this one its good. " I've lost faith in the Chinese clasical arts-though I still call mine chinese" pg.53
  23. I asume is was written by him. its Bruce Lee's commentaries on the martial way. Edited by John Little and has a little intro by Linda Lee and a foreward by Ted wong.
  24. In the book, BRUCE LEE-JEET KUNE DO, page47 under jeet kune do origin and development it says " What is jeet kune do (JKD)? Chinese martial art, definitely! It is a kind of chinese martial art that does away with with distinction of branches, an art that rejects formality, and an art that is liberated from tradition"
  25. Thanks for all the replys so far, I do plan on training for about a year. I am not really shooting for the UFC, just some local event that they have here and the bragging rights to say that I competed, win or lose it will be a great experiance and get me back into shape.
