  1. I am lucky I can train with my best friend and co worker who is head instructor for free.
  2. I am not going to let anyone get close enough to stroke my back... lol, but yes i believe they work
  3. I do not really care for them. I see a lot of mcdojo's do them.
  4. we close our eyes and place our lead foot right next to eachothers and can not move it, so u rely on blocking, trapping, bobbing and weaving. and contact is soft
  5. Does anyone here condition their hands on something like the makiwara? If so do you get thoes really big knuckles
  6. 1000 punches a day on the makiwara make knuckles big and strong.
  7. I have alway been told that no one should be that close to me, If they step closer I move back and tell them to stay away. Next time they come in I consider it an attack and strike first and hard.
  8. I have trouble hitting the girls who i spar with
  9. I can do a good cannonball from the high dive
  10. I do not care for instructors or students who are racest to other martial art system. regardless of where they may come form japan, korea, china IF people had an open mind they would see that every art has something you can learn from it.
  11. I have a problem with doing nothing when faced with a gun, It does depend on the situation but in this day and age they might just shoot you anyway even if you do what they say. Remember 911 , plane hijackers used to just take hostages so you did what they said, but all that has changed. so if im going to be shot no matter what I might as well try my hardest.
  12. condition your fists on something like a makawara
  13. I think it was joe lewis who said," if a judo player comes at me and i hit him ill bury him, but if he gets to me first he will bury me".
  14. I think of it like this, In a self defense situation all your strikes may come into play like if someone grabs you or threatens you, an agresser and a victim.Sparring is totally different as to that both people are squared off and realdy for a fight.
  15. I agree with sasori-te, you can enroll in a mma class or jeet kune do and go in there and work out, I have nothing against that. Thoes of us who enjoy karate love it for the art and the way of life, to me self defense is way different than fighting. There are techniques in kata that work very well and if you do bunki it will all make sense.
  16. I am not sure of the proper way to bow but in my class we keep eye contact. My friend that was is japan said thay they bow very low almost to the point as who can go the lowest. So i just honor what my dojo does and keep eye contact. we bow to eachother, sensi and to the training hall.
  17. I have not been to japan but my friend in the air force was stationed there, maybe they only bow to americans but they sure did to him so how is it dying. not everyone here in america shakes hands so is shaking hands dying? no its part of how we greet people and the tradition of japan is to bow and that is honored when we study an ART CALLED KARATE.
  18. I have been able to find a shotokan school closer to me and it is very cheap.$15 a month but it is only twice a week and is offered thru the park and rec. district. I will check it out.
  19. Sometimes I think that half of the people in the martials should not be there. Keep the traditional arts alive.
  20. The kenpo im looking at is american kenpo but there is also a kosho type in the area but it cost more.
  21. If you have ever been to japan everyone bows and they are not martial artist. It is part of the custom sort of like shaking hands here. They even take off their shoes on the house. This is all part of the art and custom, you can always find a school that does not do it.
  22. Hello, are there any kenpo people in here? If so what style and do u like it? I am thinking about doing kenpo because of location and cost, I am orange belt in shotokan now and how would it be to change? thanks
  23. I think the grappler you are talking about is gene lebell. as far as the first ufc's grappling was not new, the people fighting just did not know what they were doing ( execpt for ken). Bruce lee trained for the street and not for compitition. I do not think that he would have done very well
  24. I think tyson fought on the streets before he was a boxer. so he might know a little more than most people think.
