Kung Fu San Soo
Treebranch replied to broomhilda000's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
It concentrates on striking to vital areas of the body. It is direct and brutal. It treats every attacker equally. The idea is to destroy your attacker in the shortest time possible. I put up a link on another thread titled "San Soo not San Shou." Check out the clips you'll pretty much see what it's about. -
TJS I think that is a good idea. We train out in the open at a park. We always get someone who thinks what we are doing won't work. So we invite them to see for themselves, and they do. I think if a school has the confidence to allow free sparring it will definitely help to improve on the techniques. I have people saying " that stuff won't work in a real fight", and I'll gently take them down by taking their balance. I'M ALL FOR OPEN SPARRING.

What do you think is the best "self defense" weapo

This site has a report that supports what you have said, but also shows the other side which you have not done. I will admit that the information provided does support your point of view more. http://www.rkba.org/research/suter/states.crime-ccw.4sep95.html I can see your point, and according to several sources I've checked you seem to be correct in feeling the way you do. I think that there are many factors not being accounted here in this debate, but on the surface it does show that the states with less gun control have less crime or a drop in crime. Also notice that Mississippi and California have roughly the same amount of crime and one allows gun carrying and the other doesn't not. So there are definetly factors that are being overlooked. I see your point, but I hate the fact that it is so easy to pull a trigger and take a life. That's why I like MA because it takes skill and dedication to be a good fighter, inversely a child can be dangerous with gun in their hand. Maybe I just fear guns, I don't know what it is. I prefer not to have one, that doesn't mean I don't know how to use one. If things truley get to the point where I feel I need a gun I will get one. Whether or not it is legal her in the Republic of California, or whatever you call it. Aim small miss small. -

What you didn't like the body armor idea? I thought it was pretty good. You really need to watch Bowling for Columbine, I think you'll like it. You really need to look at the statistics of gun related deaths in the US as compared to other First World Industrialized Nations. So from what you have said, do you carry a gun to protect yourself from the Police? Who's the criminal now? Are you going to shoot an officer if he points his gun at you and gives you a command? You can't compare Vermont where everything is so spread out to California. Just compare the population of Los Angeles alone to Vermont. Sorry, but bad comparison. Do you really think the guns used in these crimes didn't come from LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. Where do you think these criminals get these guns. They get them from people who go and rob the LAW ABIDING CITIZENS home when no one is home and take their GUN COLLECTION and sell it. Think about it. When your not home someone can break in and take your precious guns, and now your BEST TOOL OF SELF DEFENSE is going to be used to kill or seriously hurt someone. Also in the process of protecting yourself with your cowardly weapon, your stray bullets might hit someone elses kids or wife or whatever. Buy a bullet proof vest and call it a day. NOBODY'S TRYING TO KILL YOU MY FRIEND. -

Buy some body armor, that will protect you. You just like the power that comes with the gun. Can their be a little truth to that. I live in Los Angeles, the last thing I wan't is for these bozos to have guns on their person. I don't feel safe as it is. I do put trust and faith in Police officers and Soldiers, more so than a citizen. I don't think Anarchy is the answer, do you? -

Thuggish can you layer the sarcasm a little thicker? I like the chunky kind. -
Kirves you're making a lot of valuable points on Japanese MA's being too traditional. How does that differ from Chinese MA's? I study Budo Taijutsu and we spar light, full contact, and we training equipment such as heavy bags, muy thai pads, etc.. The techniques are still traditional, but we are not training to fit techniques into a specific situation. We are training to have free response to an attack. I think their is an inherent danger in underestimating TMA's. We have studied some techniques from a wrist grab, but most of them are from punches and kicks, and tackles. We are realistic about what we are studying. We know how most people fight these days, and the techniques work. We don't play fair at all, anything that will work we will use. I have my own criticisms about MMA or modern concepts, but I won't get into that right now.

OK I'll buy that.

Well then I'm going to go out and buy a AK 47 and couple of hand grenades. People are dangerous, all people are potentially dangerous, put a gun in their hand and you have just made them lethal. I don't trust anyone, especially if they have a gun. How often have you personally had to use your gun to protect your family? In reality you most likely will never have to. I don't think we live in a utopia, I think we live in a ultra violent society with alot of paranoid people going around carrying guns. Believe me the media has no influence on me, I rarely watch the new. I despise the media. Once you use that gun on someone, out of anger or jealousy or whatever. Now the law abiding citizen has become the outlaw. This happens all the time. I much rather be attack by someone armed with a hammer than with a gun. At least I'd have a chance. That's why I study MA. I hope to god that your kids or someone's kid get a hold of your gun and it misfires. You do have the right to have a gun, I just hope you never have to use it. -
Now, how often are you attacked on the modern streets by someone coming up close and holding your wrist? Or in a bar - does the mean looking tattooed biker come yelling at you and then take a hold of your wrist? That happens alot to women. A male attacker often grabs a woman's wrist. Some techniques are dated, but the principals behind them still work.

My Mexican Judo is the best. Judo know if I have a gun and Judo know if I have a knife. -
